Vera Mae's Bistro
Tried the new dinner menu and loved the items we ordered. The Chilean sea bass was beautifully prepared and the cassoulet was terrific. The cranberry and pecan entree was delicious especially because of the dressing. We will be back soon.
I grew up in Muncie and come back at least once a year to visit. Vera Mae's is always at the top of my restaurant list. World class food and cocktails priced well, kind staff, and the owners always make you feel like they have been waiting all day to see you. This is the place to go in Muncie for fine dining at its best!
Gilbert and I were extremely pleased with our experience at Vera Mae's on Tuesday. The food was delicious, our server was attentive, the soup was hot and the cost was reasonable. We look forward to a return visit.
Delicious food and drinks
Friendly staff
Felt like we were at “Cheers”, where everybody knows your name. Relaxed atmosphere. Highly recommend!
I had a Filet of Beef Dinner, with smashed small potato's, and asparagus. The meal was accompanied by a small house salad. Our server, was excellent, and was there when we needed her, but did not "hover." The restaurant had a welcome feel to it, and was nicely decorated...I liked it. My steak was "Rare" as requested, and very tasty. The only suggestion I could make, would be for the restaurant to add a baked potato to the menu, which is not available now. I enjoyed my visit.
Made a reservation here at 5:30 on a Saturday, well in advance, as we were in town for a concert. We arrived and were offered the worst table available even though there were several for a party of our size, 2 people. The greeter, seater seemed quite miffed that we would request a different table.
We were greeted by our server about 10 minutes later and received 1/2 our beverage order 10 mins later. The other 1/2 trailed by another 5 minutes. We received our soup an salad starter 30 minutes after our reservation time.
At this point it was obvious the servers were frantic and a man with a ponytail arrived to assist the team. All this was forgivable until...our main courses arrived 45 minutes later, $30+ meals that were cold, dry and tasteless. We’d traveled all day and were starving and so ate our meals...weird gremolata that somehow turned into neon green sauce with a vinegary flavor and “smashed” potatoes that never made it to a smashed state. No one really noticed, or asked, how the food tasted.
Very disappointing! It seems like the restaurant was not prepared for a busy Saturday night...but really, it’s all in how you handle it. No real apologies or gestures apart from a comp glass of wine which was delivered just prior to receiving our check...nearly 2 hours after we were seated!
Food was outstanding!!! Special dishes included an Italian truffle risotto that was delicious!
Celebrating nephews scholarship
Outstanding dining experience! Great ambiance! Food was excellent and service was outstanding! From the crab & artichoke dip appetizer to the entrees to the bread pudding, the food was served hot & with care! I would definitely dine there again!
We went there for dinner before a show at Emens Theatre
Still the best dining experience in Muncie. Get the French Onion soup for sure.
Great service, food was fantastic, greated & seated right on time.
We had a great celebration. The chef seems to have taken to making spicy soups so given our ages, we all had to pass and settle for salads. The brie chicken was very good as usual although there were no raspberries in sight. The scallops were quite wonderful although grits were not selected as the accompaniment even though that is what is always offered. The Ghyslain desserts were outstanding and an appropriate choice for a celebration.
Food was excellent and treated like friends with helpful and delicious recommendations!
This was my second visit and first for my husband and student daughter.
We reserved our table using Open Table and it was seamless. I reserved patio seating and our table was ready for us when we arrived on a very busy Sat. evening. Cocktails were fabulous and expedited quickly. Our server did a wonderful job explaining the specials and taking our order. We all ordered the same entree (chicken with Brie & raspberry coulis) but each had different side items. The soup was wonderful and hot and our dinners served correctly. We enjoyed the creme brûlée for dessert!!
This will be our go to spot for the next 4 years!
The tagliatelle bolognese had a speckle of meat appearance . This was not worth $22.00 and was not cooked correctly. I’m Italian and know what it should have been. If you cannot afford to serve the meat then don’t offer it.
We always get rave reviews about this dish and have never gotten a complaint. I am baffled. Did you bring this to the attention of your server? I was here and knew nothing about this situation. Please contact me if you'd like to speak further. Best regards, Kent Shuff-Owner
Always great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you so much!!!! :)
Very interesting place with all the right moves from chef to server.
Thank you!!! :)
The owners are exceptional hosts...making everyone feel welcome. Varied menu of delicious and well presented food. A must not miss place to dine.
Definitely the place to be.
Thank you so much!!!! :)
Four of the five of us were completely satisfied and happy with our drinks, appetizers and entrees. One guest told us the next day that her chicken was BURNED and she could not eat it. She was too shy to make an issue of it since the rest of us were obviously enjoying our meals. Our guests, from Europe, thought that our server, Helen, was brusque and openly resentful of the tip they paid, so much so that we encouraged our guest to add more money to the tip, which she did.
I'm so sorry to hear of this situation, Ingrid. I do wish that your guest would have mentioned something to Helen about the chicken, because we would have quickly and discreetly corrected the problem. We cannot correct what we don't know needs attention. I will absolutely have the conversation with Helen about your concerns about the gratuity or how it was handled. I'm unsure as to how this actually played out, but I certainly will investigate. Thank you for your comments. :)
Appetizer of crab cakes was delicious. Both of our entrees were very bland and didn’t taste very good regardless of price, but disappointing especially because of the cost.
Though it was a slow night, neither the food nor the service suffered (as it can when a restaurant is not very busy). The spinach basil puree was amazing and complimented the steak perfectly. The Shrimp Remoulade is beyond good ... just delicious and savory and refreshing.
As usual, the food, service and atmosphere were all excellent at Vera Mae's. It's always an exceptional dining experience and we recommend it to everyone.
Scallops served cold. Noisy street traffic on patio. Could use some bargain bottle wines.
A working lunch is always nicer at Vera Mae's. A delicious focaccia sandwich and very nice crab cake facilitated a very successful meeting.
Perfect Cosmopolitan
Wonderful Brie blueberry appetizer
Deep flavored lentil beef soup
Perfectly cooked and dressed Sea Bass
..and the Bourbon Pecan Pie OMG!
The meal was outstanding, but the highlight of the night was meeting the owners Kent and Steve, so much fun! Thank you for a birthday to remember. We can't wait ti return.
Have been many times with great experience . Love the quirky decor. The bar is beautiful. This visit was a special occasion. My sons 21st bday. He is vegitarian and his girlfriend is vegan. I was disappointed because I called and asked if vegan options were available and was told of course and the chef can adapt most meals. When we got there that was not the case:( a few appetizers could be made without cheese and of course a salad but they wanted something hearty. I understand vegan is speciality and do not expect to have options at most places but would like to have been told when I called that vegan options were minimal instead of making it sound like it was no big deal and that we would have plenty of options.
Never had a bad experience, food is high quality and perfectly cooked. Servers are very informed and attentive
We had a wonderful meal, with perfect service at Vera Mae’s Bistro. The cocktails were generous and well-made, the food was divine, and the service was cheerful, welcoming, and attentive. While a little pricey (compared to similar fine dining spots in cities like Columbus, Indy, or Cincinnati), I left knowing we’ll be back! This is a perfect celebration spot, and the perfect place to indulge yourself and splurge on a great meal.
It was one of my best dining experiences. I’ve eaten at some of the best restaurants in Indianapolis like St Elmo’s and Hyde Park and Vera’s is very comparable. Service was marvelous. I will return to this wonderful establishment soon. Bravo!!!!
Cajun night. Soft shelled crab, oysters an gumbo. As usual it was wonderful.
We had an excellent meal. We started with crawfish nachos and we each had the French onion soup. I had the sea bass special and it was prepared perfectly. My wife had the sea scallops with cheese grits. She enjoyed it too. Our daughter had the duck and she said it was very good. She had enough she could bring home for lunch tomorrow. Josh was our waiter and he did a fantastic job. We would ask for him the next time we are in.
Vera May's atmosphere and congenial welcoming is always the best! Outstanding staff, Stephanie and Carlos made our dining experience and after dinner drinks wonderful! Always a pleasure to visit with Ken as well, even getting to experience a walk through of the cellar. The food our guests chose did not disappoint, the duck was prepared perfectly to her request, the filet as well, and the pork chops were fantastic! However, my chicken gremolata was over cooked, but when asked if the chef would replace, they did and it came out perfect! Much appreciated! We will be back, as well as our friends, and keep spreading the word on the great experiences we have had at Vera Mays!
Excellent historic ambiance and food! We received a personal visit from the owner on the history. Like many restaurants they were short on staff so it was slow and long but worth the wait!
My steak and salad were exceptional. I would like to be able to get baked potato with my dinner though. It is not on the menu anymore. The service provided by Andrew was excellent, as always. My dining experience was really good, I enjoy eating at Vera's.
Great live music on Friday night for a wonderful dinner.
The Shrimp Remoulade was outstanding, a lovely blend of ripe avocado, shrimp remoulade, and bitter greens with a lovely, savory/peppery vinaigrette. I wish they had actually removed the very nicely sliced avocado from the skin, but that was a very minor quibble. My wife had the salmon (excellent, nice crisp sear, rich soft flesh, savory smooth popcorn grits), and I had the tagliatelle bolognese (the beef ragu was thoroughly broken down, savory, rich, and well seasoned). Bread Pudding for desert ... sinfully good.
Entering the restaurant, we were surprised by how great the decor and ambiance came to be. The service was excellent. Friendly and professional waiters who weren’t afraid to joke and get to know us. Great food, unique menu choices, fantastic desert and a bartender who wasn’t afraid to play! Highly recommend!
Been to Vera Mae's on several occasions and had great experience. This time our server was not very attentive. Took longer than we thought it should to get our orders put in.
