Venable is consistently good - both food and service.
Best entrees we have ever had and have been coming to Veneables since it opened. Loved the monkfish special and glazed salmon!!!!!
My wife and I have eaten here twice recently, with a different couple each time. All of us enjoyed our meals. The steaks are delicious. The creamy potatoes and cauliflower are also very good. We have been pleased with a couple choices of "the appetizer of the day". The wine list is very good. There are many beers, tho some similar bistros have broader selections. Service is efficient and courteous but not rushed. While it is only moderately noisy, the acoustics can be challenging for us older folks, especially those with hearing aids, tho we discovered that it is easier to converse at the tables or the bar on the bar side.
The server was very articulate when announcing the specials. Two of us opted for the beet-goat cheese salad which was not very good. Beets and goat cheese didn't have much flavor and red lettuce was disappointing. The server brought our bills on time, but never thanked us for dining with them. Very disappointed in this restaurant that I had frequented several times previously. Will wait to go back.
Food was good. Atmoshpere was nice, but a bit loud. What really prompted this review was the waitress. She was very unfriendly, not very helpful and asked us if we wanted seperate checks without even asking if we wanted dessert.
Venable's is one of our favorite brunch places! The food is consistently delicious, uses fresh ingredients, and is beautifully presented. The waitpersons are attentive and often a lot of fun. I have my favorites (huevos rancheros, or the herbed eggs) and my husband has his favorites (green chili pork stew or eggs/bacon/potato pancake), but we also have enjoyed a number of the brunch specials. (We hear that they also serve delicious lunches and dinners. We just prefer to go out for brunch on Saturday or Sunday.)
We really enjoyed our evening at Venable. The staff was friendly and were well informed about the menu. The menu offers gluten free options and the server was knowledgable about options for someone who has celiac disease. All of our meals were delicious and we just enjoyed the cozy and warm atmosphere . It is lively but not so loud that you can't enjoy your conversation around the table.
My husband and I always enjoy dining at Venable. The food is consistently excellent, and the service is always friendly and professional. We are sometimes joined by adult children and grandchildren, and everyone is able to find something they really enjoy on the menu.
Food was so high in fast. Virtually NO healthy options. I had the salad, and it wasn't no interesting, had absolutely no dressing, tomatoes on it were not ripe or even close. Husband's eggs benedict were poor. Overall, very disappointing.
Portions were a little below average compared to pricing. Food was overpowered by rosemary and herbs. Service was good and atmosphere was nice.
It has great cocktails and a vegan, vegetarian, gf/celiacs friendly menu with lots of options for the high quality of experience they are offering.
This is on of our favorite restaurants and we always ecosmmend it to f fiends when they want to get together.
Wonderful all round
We had a reservation for Sunday brunch at Venable that unexpectedly grew from five to nine people. We were lucky that it was still spring break, but the staff was unflustered, accomodating, and the food was its regular excellent self. Out-of-towners (here for a reunion) remarked on how lucky we were to have a place like Venable nearby.
liked the decor; liked the service ... food was only slightly above average and, as i consider myself a foodie, probably will try somewhere else next time i'm in Carrboro.
Food was excellent and varied. The Huevos were as good as I have had anywhere including restaurants in New Mexico. The pork stew with green chilies was also top notch. Cold brew was terrific. The only issues were a minor reservation snafu, restaurant was packed, and noise level which made conversation difficult. Service was excellent .
Wonderful brunch as always. Never disappointed coming here!
We found the brunch to be creative and good in terms of taste, but pretty insubstantial overall. None of us felt like we'd actually eaten afterwards, except for the person who had french toast. The seating in window nooks and by the windows is really comfortable and conducive to conversation and enjoying natural light. Staff are nice.
Alison was a great server. Ask for her when you arrive.
The fried chicken was buried under a bed of lettuce. Thought that was odd.
Grass-fed beef sirloin was excellent, as was the baby kale side salad, mashed potatoes and buttered vegetables that I had with it. My wife had the fish tacos which she said were also excellent. Service was prompt, attentive and courteous. Noise level was quiet to moderate. Overall excellent.
So many delicious options for brunch, it was tough to decide what to order. Will definitely be back.
Delicious food and great ambience
Everything was very good except tamale. It was good but not great.
Recently, it was my son's 24 bday. We went a long time ago to venables, when it first opened, and had not been back. It was wonderful! 2 of us has wine and 2 had beer that they enjoyed, the menu varied enough so that everyone had something completely different. 2 of us had a fab dessert s
And one was complimentary for his bday! How nice!
The Chicken is Outstanding!!!!
Great food and service!! We met our son and his friend for brunch and all of us throughly enjoyed our food.
We love this place. We've been coming to brunch (and occasional other lunches and dinners) for years since moving into town, and it's always a terrific time. Great food, friendly staff, and they're really good about prompt reservations. Knowledgeable bartenders (we sit at the bar when I just go with my wife) and easy-going yet attentive waitstaff when we're at the tables (we usually sit at tables if we go for brunch with my parents and/or other friends). Really can't say enough good about it. It's one of our two (pretty much tied) favorite places in town. B-Side behind it (associated with it) is equally awesome.
Nice spot for dinner in the Old Carr Mill. Menu was small with interesting choices. Meat was an add-on to many of the menu items, which made for lots of flexibility.
First time. Very pleased. Will definitely go back again.
Always enjoy celebrating at Venable...food, service, wine always a treat!
The samon benedict special on Sunday was very disapointing... please just do a traditional benedict !
Went there for my birthday and Valentine's Day simultaneously. Was a very peaceful place, quiet enough to have intimate conversation, and the food was prompt and delicious. Would definitely return here.
This was our frist visit to this restaurant We found it to be a warm and casual environment, with friendly and helpful staff and delicious food (including GL selection) All agreed we will return.
Enjoyable first visit. Food and service was excellent - will definitely return soon.
This is a great restaurant for a casual meal with tasty food. Everyone in our party was satisfied - the very hungry teenagers, vegetarian mother, and dieting grandmother. Not many places can successfully be all things to all diners. Nice selection of beers and wines appreciated as well.
Good, but not quite up to usual quality. Busy night may explain service that was not particularly attentive.
Venable is one of my go-to places for meeting friends for lunch. The menu is nicely varied and the food is always good and servings generous. The waitstaff is nicely attentive without being overbearing. I tend to pay particular attention to noise in restaurants, and Venable is perfect in that regard. Parking is always a bit iffy in the parking lot in the front, but there is plenty of parking within a short walking distance. I highly recommend.
On a four day visit, we dined at three top-rated restaurants in Chapel Hill, all truly excellent; but Venables was the best. With a capacity crowd on a Saturday night, the place was humming--with excellence. Our "top" award goes to Venables because both the kitchen and the front of house staff clearly work as a team to ensure the great menu items are served in the most positive way. From the bus person who kept the tables available and the water filled, to the wait staff who worked flawlessly as a team, it was fun to watch and delightful to experience. We never felt rushed no matter how busy the staff was, and felt warmly welcomed and well served by Jessica, our server. The drinks were just as ordered, and the food--both specials and off the regular menu--met and exceeded expectations without exception, all prepared exactly as requested. Treat yourself to a very special restaurant experience. They don't often rise to this level of excellence.
We had brunch on a Saturday and it was delicious! Kids loved the waffles, I had the tofu salad. Serious was wonderful as always. Venable is a place we consistently return for all these reasons!
