Venable Rotisserie Bistro Ratings and Reviews
Although we have been to Venable for lunch and dinner this was the first brunch experience and it was fantastic! Wonderful shrimp and grits, salmon cake Benedict and croissants with jam. Because of a special celebration we also indulged in brunch cocktails which were spot on! The service was just right- not too hovering but attentive, and although it’s not priced for everyday consumption it was reasonable for a special occasion!
Venable is nearly always a great time and is one of our go-to spots. It's one of the few nice places to go with kids that the whole family enjoys. Excellent drinks, interesting, eclectic, and yummy food, and fantastic service are staples. I personally think that there are a couple misses here and there on the menu, but there are a lot more hits than misses. (Misses being the banh mi and pad thai, which the Thai place on Franklin and Jujube do better). I'm vegetarian, and I think the vegetarian options are really good, especially the tamales. I would probably give a 4.5 on the food, but the service, drinks, and location push it to a 5.
I love Venable but this was my first time at brunch and it wasn't a great experience. We sat in one of the bumped-out window tables, which I usually like, but the sun was brutally hot and there were no options to shade it. The floor sank down when we walked on it, and when we pointed it out to the waiter, he seemed blase about it and said, "Yeah. Management knows we have some floor problems." The food was mediocre - a flattened, over-fried chicken breast, a dinner roll which had been described on the menu as a biscuit, and gravy that had been described as sausage gravy, but had tasteless lumps in it. No taste of sausage. the eggs were fine as was the bloody mary.
I'll come back at dinner again, but not brunch.
Not your finest hour, Venable.
We go here every so often because the menu changes and is always interesting. That said, it is sometime a big hit and sometimes a disappointment. I had the vegetable tamale, nice but not spicy enough and the avocado ($3 surcharge) consisted a a few skimpy slices. My husband loved the fish tacos and our companion was not impressed with the calamari appetizer. She had had it before, when is was fried, and loved it. The noise level is usually not so bad but there was a party on this night and we were right beside them.
The restaurant was very busy on a Saturday night. Upon filling all tables, it became very noisy. The private window tables are very nice if you are able to sit at one. The food and beverages were good and delivered in a timely fashion. A bit expensive for the quality of ambiance, but it was a nice meal.
Food was good and desserts exceptional. But the extremely high noise level and poor acoustics ruined the experience. With three large, loud tables near us we were unable to carry on a conversation. Will still try lunches and possibly weeknight evenings but will not chance a weekend dinner again
Went there for the first time and loved it! Wide selection of foods-something for everyone. Nice atmosphere-imagine that more people there would make it more noisy but I would expect that of any open air location. Our server was fantastic; friendly, attentive, and helped us with our choices. Prices are good for what you get-portions are not overwhelming but will fill you up!
Have been to Venable many times and, as usual, the service “spot on” and the food delicious. We both had the Pablo crusted chicken with the arugula salad served on it, with one having the sticky toffee pudding and the other the panna cotta.
Nothing but good to say about the lunch.
Worth a visit ... or two.
There are several similar restaurants in Carrboro, and Venable has always been my favorite. We were so pleased with our appetizers. The Korean BBQ is a favorite. Every time we order it to share, I think I introduce our friends to a new favorite. The calamari appetizer had a sauce that was amazing for dipping warm bread into. I ordered the halibut special, which was served over an eggplant mixture. It was amazing!
When our food was delivered the food slid off the tray breaking a water glass which shattered and sent shards everywhere including some of the food. My wife was soaked with water. One dish was replaced but it's possible glass got elsewhere. Management should have gotten involved and offered to replace all of the food. We never were visited by management with no apologies except by the original food server. We continued to find glass slivers on the table during the entire meal. One of our favorite restaurants but our meal with our children was ruined.
The food was excellent, well prepared, great ingredients, interesting variety. But the highlight was service- our server Joe was very possibly the best server we have ever encountered. Knowledgeable on the menu, including details on preparation that were important to one of our party with dietary challenges. Well versed in the wine list and how to ask our preferences and offer less than obvious options for pairing with specific dishes, brought a couple of samples for us to try. Attentive and friendly without being overbearing, a good salesperson without selling, a pleasure all around. He made the evening!
