Vert inventive chef New flavors mixed tasteful flavors
I was very disappointed in this restaurant. I would not recommend it at all, the service was slow, the food was overdone( I ordered the salmon), the view was blocked by pillars, then just at sunset they put shades down so you couldn't see anything. Would not go back at all, way overpriced when there are so many other tasteful options nearby.
My fish was over cooked and the kids pizza was as well. One of the pizza's was so over done my daugther could not bit through the crust. Our server was friendly, but the services for getting orders in and getting our food was very slow. For the prices I would expect a lot more. We were not impressed at all.
This hotel is special to my husband and I so we have dined at Vela for that reason. However, it's not anything I'd recommend to anyone over the countless options in downtown SD. Both weekend nights we've been there showed just a handful of customers. The menu is pretty limiting - only a handful of entree options yet the one I ordered was not available after the server put order into the kitchen. The portions are fairly small, especially considering the upscale prices. Once dark, there's not much of a view factor so one should consider the purpose of coming. This restaurant would seem ideal for the hotel guest needing an onsite elegant meal, but not a draw for non-guests when so many other unique options exist in the area and for less cost.
We felt really sorry for our Server. She was super nice. The kitchen was pretty confused. Our dinner took way to long to come out from the kitchen. My pork tenderloin was cold and my husband's short rib was not cooked enough and chewy. A kind gentleman came by to check in on us and we expressed the chewy short rib. Did not offer a replacement or anything, but did not matter since we had to head over to Petco. The folks sitting next to us, who ordered after us, received all their food at once, 3 courses. The restaurant was not super busy when we dined so we really could not see any reason for the issues. Later we came back from Petco to the bar and it was packed. There were not enough bartenders or servers or even any food available after 11pm. The hotel was sold out due to Rolling Stones and they should have known that guests would want food and drink after the show.
The food was perfect. Well cooked salmon and roasted veggies. My mom and I truely enjoyed breakfast and dinner. I will eat here again even if we are not staying in the restaurant. Thank you
The main issue with this place is the price. For the food quality, service, ambiance, everything this restaurant compares poorly to everything else at the same price point in this area. If it were half the price it might rate 4 stars or in the high 3 range but with all the choices in easy walking distance I wouldn't even recommend this if you were staying at the hotel. One positive thing was they validated parking so that wasn't an extra charge like you might incur for other downtown locations. Still not worthwhile though.
Had the 1/2 natural chicken dinner. It was good, but not superb. Service was not bad. Overall rating is below of what I usually give to most of my reviews.
Very nice buffet. A bit pricey if you are paying your own way (non expense account) and a long wait with no real reason as there were plenty of open tables on a Sunday. Not sure if they were short servers or kitchen staff. Overall very nice.
Our waiter was very nice, and attentive. However it did feel like a hotel restaurant and the food took forever! A really long time before the appetizers were served, and then an equally long time til dinner. It was a good thing we weren't in a rush.
- delicious papaya Mai tai and short ribs
- tasty cheese and salami platter
Unremarkable steak, shrimp, and pork belly. I have eaten breakfast at the bar, and that was delicious.
I experienced Vela while at the Baseball Winter Meetings this year. We arrived late from a delayed flight into town and wanted to go somewhere close. Turned out to be a pretty good choice. We were one of only three groups in the restaurant by 8:30 that night. The service was excellent. We were greeting promptly and seated immediately. Good attention from our server though, considering he really didn't have anyone else to watch over, he did not hover. My tuna was well presented and prepared. Reasonable portion. The views of the harbor added to the atmosphere. The décor led a little to be desired. it reminded me very much of a Disney hotel restaurant. I would not have been surprised if a movie character would have come out to spend some time with us. Pricing was a little high, but then I hear that is more a condition of San Diego than of the restaurant in general. Overall, a good experience.
Vela is the high-end restaurant at the Bayfront Hilton. It is situated almost on the water so it has a good view of San Diego Bay just north of the Coronado Bridge.
The ambiance is fairly dressy but as usual for San Diego no-one dress up.
The young staff is attentive and seem to know their food and wine.
As for the food the menu is fairly limited but I think it covers the bases of modern American style for most people,
I had Beef short rib - very tender in a rich sauce - with OK broccoli and a tasty risotto. Not exactly advanced cuisine but enjoyable. My wife had a shrimp appetizer with the shrimp just lightly cooked for an excellent flavor. We were also pleased with the beets and greens salad. The flourless chocolate cake and homemade ( I think) ice cream for dessert hit the spot.
The reason I downgraded the ambiance was the free light show. The light in the high ceiling over our table would dim and go out every few minutes. We noticed a few other lights were also doing this. A bit distracting when trying to read a menu, Our server offered to relocate us but we decided to stay put because of the excellent view.
Basic hotel food: pretty good, overpriced, mediocre service. The electric light above the table kept dimming, then lighting back up. So this is what it's like to go blind.
The food wasn't to die for. Average worth the money, we weren't offered bread like everyone else around our tables. Looks like the employees have to deal with a lot of rich high maintenance customers. Definitely should step it up with a better food menu for those kind of people. Wouldn't go back because of my taste in food.
Overpriced for the quality. Service is slow; seems understaffed. Dessert seemed like what you'd get at a large mass production banquet. My dinner arrived before my glass of wine did. It's okay hotel restaurant food at best.
Try the pineapple habanero margarita it was powerful. The scallops melted in my mouth
Food was just okay (dessert was best part), service was terribly slow, a malfunctioning overhead light bulb which behaved more like a strob light made reading the menu difficult and gave me a headache, music was annoying and loud.... Vela was not what I expected.
We had a wonderful meal and great service during our stay at the hotel restaurant. Our server was great and we would recommend highly for dinner. Lovely view also.
Good hype but very poor quality food that was very expensive. Business dinner- quite disappointed.
Food would be good at a chain but not for a Hilton
We chose to celebrate my birthday by going to San Diego Symphony Summer Pops at the Embarcadero. Since the Hilton Bayfront is such a short walking distance, it made sense to have dinner there before the concert. This turned out to be a terrific plan! The food and service were outstanding. I loved the cioppino (a starter on the menu, but enough for an entree) and my husband enjoyed the flat iron steak, especially with the chimichurri horseradish. Very pleasant experience!
We had a great table with a great view and the food was amazing. Very tasty and I loved the presentation, all the way down to the dessert. I would recommend Vela to my friends and family for sure.
I recommend everyone to stop great food beautiful view loved the shrimp alfredo and salmon..and breakfast was delicious
The only option for food was a buffet that we are told on the phone would have vegan options. The food selection was horrible, undercooked, cold, and very few options. The only healthy thing they had was salad and it ran out right away so we couldn't even have that. The service was good and the view was great for the fireworks, but, I was really surprised at how awful the food was.
A lot going on at Vela - but mostly the service was terrible. Server could not remember what we ordered, brought the wrong drink order, etcetera. The host was not inviting upon arrival, not one person said "hi". Also it was dirty - on the floor beneath our table was dried, crusty food - not something from that day - it was old enough to be shriveled and falling apart from movement under the table legs from a vacuum cleaner.
Probably will not return.
Given that most hotel restaurants are over-priced and over-hyped, I had low expectations when I made a reservation at Vela, but I was unexpectedly surprised by the quality of the food and service. Despite the fact that the breakfast prices at Vela are inflated (as in most hotels), I found the dinner menu to be much more reasonable. If you are looking for a good restaurant right on the San Diego harbor, definitely keep Vela in mind.
The food was good -- actually, the duck comfit was as good as any I have had in Paris -- but despite views of the harbor, the decor was blah and the service lackidazical.
Made reservations via OT & learned that Vela is a 1000 for dinner.point place! We were recognized upon arrival as celebrating a birthday & were taken to a nice window table. Would have had great view except clouds decided to roll in :( Service was very good -- thank you Michelle. We started with bruschetta & pita bread and hummus. Both were very good. I had the lamb shank with polenta for my main course. DELICIOUS! The lamb was very tender, flavorful & fell off the bone. The polenta was the best I've had anywhere including when we lived in Italy. My wife wasn't very hungry so chose the Cioppino from the starter section. It was pretty good sized & she said it was great. We then enjoyed a special birthday dessert compliments of the house.
food was ok - I was expecting better and the desert was just awful and we tried all of them. the drinks were great and the flavored tequilas really great. Our server was awesome and we had a great time, just would have been great if the food was better
The hostess was lovely, but the waitress was inattentive (we never got bread and waited ages for our dinner plates to be cleared.) My arugula salad was very tasty (although missing the promised hazelnut crunch), but my Baja Seafood Boil was overcooked and overpriced. I had to remind the waitress of the Kids Eat Free policy (although, in her favor, she did immediately correct the oversight.) Potential for a really good restaurant here, but not quite living up to it yet.
Three hours for dinner and we were only one if ten tables in the place. Food was not really good. This more of a coffee shop in a hotel, trying to be a dinner place. It had a nice view, but couldn't see it because the lighting was too bright in the room. Overall, I will not come here again unless I need a bagel and I am staying at the hotel.
We had a wonderful dining experience....ambiance, food, and service. We were staying at the hotel, so I went to the Vela early to ask for a window seat. The bartender was opening up and was most hospitable, telling me that he'd endeavor to get us a window seat. When we did arrive, he remembered me and said he was successful and that the hostess would seat us.
New to San Diego, I opted for dinner in the hotel after a long day of travel. I tried Vela and was happy to find that not only did it have a great view but it was clean, servers were efficient and friendly, and the food and wine were delicious. I had the Creme Brule for dessert and it was amazing! I highly recommend this to anyone staying at the Hilton Bayfront or anyone on the area looking for a relaxed, but elegant dining experience.
I typically choose a hotel with an onsite restaurant for convenience. Being so close to the gas lamp, I wonder if Vela is overlooked for local options. After a long conference, I decided to stay in, Vela did not disappoint. Our server was attentive in the right moments and offered good sugesstions from the menu. I'd return to Vela my next trip to SD.
Everything was perfect from hostess to food. Thank you would go again
The place was decent enough. Wouldn't really recommend it for Anything other than a nice place to eat for hotel
Guests. If you're not staying at the hotel, you could
Do a lot better for the price
I chose Vela for their Valentines Day special, and am SO glad that I did! I was seriously shocked that the place wan't crowded, especially after experiencing the restaurant. The service was attentive and terrific (thank you Adrianne!). The food was to-die-for! We enjoyed a butternut squash ravioli appetizer, a champagne-grapefruit sorbet, and as entrees seared main diver scallops and roasted duck breast. The food was positively exquisite! But then the dessert plate came out. It was not just a dessert, it was a variety of chocolate, mousse, creme brulee, "cotton candy," and more! (I had to share a picture of it on Facebook.) WONDERFUL experience! I can't wait to go back. Thank you to Vela for making a special occasion that much more special!
Went here with my girlfriend for Valentine's day and we had the duck and it was great. Had the ravioli as the first dish and it was great, so good that I used the excellent bread to soak up the sauce.
This was an easy destination but after dining there, I feel
I wasted an evening in San Diego. The food was tasteless , both items I ordered. I really wonder who was actually preparing the food.
The entire staff made our date very welcoming. Our waitress made wonderful choices for dinner. We were treated very well. Thank you for the excellent service.
