Vatan Indian Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
Plentiful delicious food with attentive service. Like eating at someone's home. Food is authentic and staff are very friendly and let you take your time. I liked how they balanced being there when we needed without being overbearing.
Some more ambiance in the way of music would be nice. There was some playing on the level below us. Otherwise it gets rather noisy which spoils the enjoyment of the restaurant.
I was looking for a vegetarian restaurant with vegan options and Vatan came up with vveryygooviews. I thought the food was very good and the service was very good. The waitress explained what we were eating (prix fix) and it was quite filling. I might have liked more variety and choice in the menu but we all really enjoyed the meal. Ambiance was unique for NYC.
Although dark inside, it was quiet enough for conversation and I think we all enjoyed the restaurant. ( I can't seem to change the remarks above - should say very good reviews...
Wonderful food and ambiance, except that the waitstaff rushed us out. For the price I would rather not feel like I am being pushed out the door after an hour and a half. I remember having leisurely dinners here with dear friends. Maybe because it was a 5:30 reservation on a Saturday night they were eager to seat the next set of diners. I would no longer invite out of town guests that I want to catch up with to this venue.
the ambience was very good. the server was good too but I was totally shocked when after 35 minutes, still not even started dessert , the owner walks around and says that if you can eat soon and leave since people are waiting!!!!! this was the first time in 20 yrs I have experienced.
Cant imagine after charging 32$ per person , the owner can talk like this. So obnoxious!!
this reason is enough for me to never go back.
also, due to the high volume, it takes forever for the server to bring refills which is understandable, but this was least expected from the owner
It was an okay experience overall. At the end our server asked us to leave while my guest and I were still talking because there was a reservation. It was a Monday evening around 7pm and not terribly busy. It was off putting - unlikely to return for that reason.
You may waddle out of Vatan--the price fixed veg dinner offers so much food. But it is all good. The samosas are crispy and light. A great assortment of both appetizers and mains and all the food is properly seasoned. The ask how hot you want your mains. The hot is pleasantly hot--not too much. It may be a little pricey for veg Indian but definitely worth it.
Food is good but with a prix fixe menu year round, I truly question the freshness of prepared food. Not stating they reuse excess food the following day but it did feel like that. For the price, freshness is the only concern. Otherwise I would recommend this place
The food is spectacular! You get so much food, unlimited, for a fixed price, so make sure to go hungry! You get the authentic Indian feel here with the ambiance, food style, interior design, everything. Such a beautiful place to go as well, with a significant other, friends, or family!
Vatan is a good social dining experience, however the quality of the food is mixed. Most dishes came out of the kitchen cool rather than hot and there was little nuance in the spice level. We went early on a Saturday night and the place was busy but not crazy, so no excuse of an over-loaded kitchen. I had expected a better dining experience.
I have been to Vatan NYC several times and each time it surpasses my expectations in both the quality and taste of the food as well as the service.
Generous portions (you can repeat whatever you like as often as you'd like), cool ambiance (like being in an Indian courtyard) and with a staff who is eager to make certain your experience the best possible.
If you like Indian then definitely visit this delightful place. You will not be disappointed!
Very warm and friendly staff support a really talented kitchen that creates a huge variety of innovative vegetarian options. People come from all over to eat here, and the great reputation of the restaurant is justly deserved. No capitulation to ersatz American tastes, this is the real thing.
The server didn't even bother to ask us for any drinks to begin with. She then said the appetizers would be out shortly and it took over 20 mins for her to bring them out. All the items on the menu were just ordinary - nothing was spectacular or extra ordinary. The mango pulp was definitely from a can -- you could taste the preservatives. For the amount they charge per person, neither the food nor the service was good. It was just OK. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. It's just hyped up.
It is very rare to find Gujarati restaurants serving authentic food. This is one of them and if you enjoy this type of food you must try it. If you haven't tried this kind of food and enjoy Indian food you must also try it.
Try to get a table where you have to take your shoes off and sit cross-legged. It adds to the authenticity of the experience. Bring an appetite too!
We used to got to Vatan quite frequently until about 5 years and so we wanted to check it out again. It was a disappointment. The food was rather bland, there was much less variation in their dishes and spicy was no spicy anymore. The decor has also changed from "tacky-nice" in the past to right out cheezy (it is more like the Disneyland of Indian vegetarian). We won't go back
It was not only a wonderful food. It was an amazing experience of all the senses: taste (perfection, in my humble opinion), sight (beautifully and lovingly decorated with expanse of breathy open space making Vatan feel like an amazingly looking spacious oasis compare to the cramped restaurants of New York city), sound (it is quiet, with enough white noise to be able to have a normal conversation with my companion, but without having to shout or lean across the table to be able to hear each other).
Last but not least, an amazing service. Minna was as beautiful and gracious, as she was helpful and informative.
I will be coming back again and again hopefully for many years to come.
The atmosphere -- with the fake monkey in the fake banyan tree, the trompe l'oeil painting, and the servers in traditional costume -- is a bit kitsch. But so what, it is also quite fun. For a reasonable price, you get a three course meal. Who knew vegetarian cooking could be so varied and flavorful? The lentil soup and the masala tea are my two personal favorites. Service is always excellent.
I am not a big fan of pure veg restaurants as such and disliked the idea of going there. However, this place beats all your expectation with its sheer simplicity. They have a quiet ambience representing a village-like atmosphere....great appetizers. They have an fixed a la carte menu, every dish is as delicious as the other. This probably is the best Indian food I have had in the USA until now (And I have been to many places).
I'm not sure that this meal could have been better. For the level of restaurant that Vatan is, the food was far above average and the service excellent. As a fairly experienced Indian food consumer, I felt that the questions I asked were fairly detailed - and he answered it all with great eagerness. Plus, the food did not disappoint - each course was delicious. And though there is enough food for a abundant meal, the all you can eat offer was repeated a few times to see if I wanted more of any particular dish(es). Since I managed to sample or consume each one, I didn't request more (as I could barely finish it all as is!).
Also, I asked for medium level spiciness and I agree that it was served accordingly. If you enjoy Indian food on the higher level of spice, I anticipate that you would be happy with the result. Mine was right on target for my expectation.
Have passed this restaurant a million times but have not eaten there until last Saturday night. I had a visitor who was a lover of Indian food and a vegetarian, We both loved the food and liked the idea we didn't have to choose what to eat. Presented beautifully. A great find for me. Our server was very informative and helpful. A delightful evening was had by both of us.
We are from out of town and heard about this place from a local. Absolutely loved it! They bring you one serving of everything on the menu and then bring you seconds of whatever you want! Some of the best Indian I've ever had! Wish we lived nearby! Will definitely recommend to others and visit again next time we are in the city!
My husband and I have been eating here for more than 15 years and the food is consistently good. Your palate gets challenged with a variety of subtle tastes.
The staff are very pleasant.
Make sure you go hungry and ready to eat a huge variety of delicious food.
