Varka Fishhouse Ratings and Reviews
Always excellent quality food and drinks at this local favorite. Service is on point with very attentive servers. We chose to make this a lighter night with multiple rounds of appetizers instead of individual meals. The lobster gyros and grilled octopus are by far the best! Can't think of anything negative to say.
We all enjoyed the fish luncheon special. The fish was perfectly prepared and delicious on the risottw with corn. For appetizers we enjoyed the fish soup and spinach in phyllo and for dessert, we shared the donuts and yogurt. Everything, even the bread, was delicious. It was a great spot for lunch and for getting together.
Our dinner was excellent, the food and service were both top notch. Went to celebrate our 20th anniversary, the friendly hostess offered us a congratulations and sat us on a cozy corner table. The server Fredy asked if it was our 1st time there and since it was he explained the menu in detail and helped in my Entrée selection, a whole fish the loup de mer. It was a great choice! I HIGHLY recommend the lobster gyro for appetizer and the lava cake was one of the best I've ever had.
Varka is upscale, well executed Greek. However it is very pricey especially for NJ and the food is only a cut above more casual Places however there is a full bar (but a weak wine list). Servers are professional but not particularly friendly - always feels like a production environment here. But they have a fantastic collection of fresh fish and seafood on display - impeccably fresh buy inappropriately pricey. Example is whole red snapper is sold by the pound - 33 bucks. So if you share one it will be over 70 bucks.
Places like Periyali is NYC are top of the game but more reasonable than Varka and better preparations. This being north Jersey however this is probably as good as it gets.
Great Octopus appetizer and wonderful salmon luncheon with fresh asparagus. My client had fried calamari (very good) and a Tuna Kabob that he said was excellent. Overall a very nice ambiance...very attentive wait staff and an overall good value for the money! I will definitely go back when next in that area.
Mainly a fish restaurant with a varied menu including beef options. Enjoy delicious, large servings in a lovely environment with great service. What more could you ask?
On Friday evening was very busy and can get quite noisy. But, not oppressively loud, can hold a conversation.
On a previous occasion I had lunch on their outdoor terrace. Also very, very good.
Took my mother here for her birthday. This place hasnt changed a bit - and they should keep it this way. Everything from the food, service, atmosphere are top notch. I’m from Ridgewood and I’m jealous. Ridgewood offers nothing even close to Varka. Keep it up!
Varka is the best Greek restaurant in Bergen County.
The food is consistently fresh and delicious.
Unfortunately, the noise level makes it difficult to have a conversation.
Best is to go in nice weather and sit on the outdoor patio.
Too bad the service is so poor. Had lunch with a friend this week.
It took a request to get menus 25 minutes after being seated, and we had to get up and ask the bartender to have the waiter bring our check at the end of our very yummy meal.
The food was very good, so was the service. The noise indoors is deafening; we had to constantly raise our voices to be understood, but so did all the other guests. Saturday night is to be avoided if you're looking for a decent conversation with your fellow diners.
We sat outside, although it was lovely, I wish they would fill in the gaps between the tall evergreens so we wouldn't see cars outside and give a feeling like we are more enclosed. The first waiter that came over to offer water was rude but everyone else was friendly!
