Varka Fishhouse Ratings and Reviews
Went for my husband’s birthday. Food was so fresh, you pick your fish out of “the boat”. Service was excellent! Plus We ordered dessert)the doughnuts so delicious) and it was on the house for his birthday! Will tell all my friends and family and will definitely go back!
Varka never disappoints! Took a friend for lunch for her birthday. This was my 1st time for lunch & it was just as wonderful as dinner. Do not miss the grilled octopus or the sampler platter of Greek spreads. The bread & olives alone ,that they do generously put on the table are delicious. Great fresh food every time.
This was a New Year’s and anniversary celebration. Fantastic food. Fresh, perfectly and simply prepared fish. Really pretty exceptional. Service wasn’t perfect because it was very busy- they forgot silverware and were too rushed And it was noisy but otherwise, a wonderful meal.
What can I say. Varka has been around forever so they must be doing something right.
The wait staff is excellent with just the right amount of attention. It is a Greek restaurant so don't expect fancy sauces as it is very clean food but cooked to perfection. Portions are very
hearty. The ambiance is nice. Sometimes a little loud if you are seated by a big party. They are New York City prices but remember no toll or parking fees and you are getting NY quality food. One of the very few restaurants in Bergen County with this high a caliber. I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone who enjoys NYC quality food but does not want to travel far.
Delicious grilled octopus appetizer (big!) and ample fresh salad. Great bread too. Entrees a bit problematic: halibut overcooked on first try and sea bass overwhelmed by tomato broth and onion slices. Simpler would have been better. Place got busy and our server was distracted by big tables. Got bailed out by front of house man. I think we will give it a second try with more careful selections.
Stylish and elegant ambience backed by outstanding food. Amazingly fresh and simply prepared using the finest ingredients. Absolutely delicious! The best Greek restaurant in NJ, hands down. My only criticism would be the awkward process to check one's coat. We were seated first, then had to struggle to remove our coats in between tables for our hostess to take with her.
Varka is a good restaurant. I have been there many times. However, it is extremely noisy when even half full. I never go there on a Saturday night since you cannot enjoy talking to the others at your table. I do recommend the food. But go there on a weekday evening if want to have a conversation with your friends or relatives. We went for lunch and since many people go out for lunch this time of year we found it quite noisy. The food choices for lunch are excellent.
Always excellent quality food and drinks at this local favorite. Service is on point with very attentive servers. We chose to make this a lighter night with multiple rounds of appetizers instead of individual meals. The lobster gyros and grilled octopus are by far the best! Can't think of anything negative to say.
We all enjoyed the fish luncheon special. The fish was perfectly prepared and delicious on the risottw with corn. For appetizers we enjoyed the fish soup and spinach in phyllo and for dessert, we shared the donuts and yogurt. Everything, even the bread, was delicious. It was a great spot for lunch and for getting together.
Our dinner was excellent, the food and service were both top notch. Went to celebrate our 20th anniversary, the friendly hostess offered us a congratulations and sat us on a cozy corner table. The server Fredy asked if it was our 1st time there and since it was he explained the menu in detail and helped in my Entrée selection, a whole fish the loup de mer. It was a great choice! I HIGHLY recommend the lobster gyro for appetizer and the lava cake was one of the best I've ever had.
Varka is upscale, well executed Greek. However it is very pricey especially for NJ and the food is only a cut above more casual Places however there is a full bar (but a weak wine list). Servers are professional but not particularly friendly - always feels like a production environment here. But they have a fantastic collection of fresh fish and seafood on display - impeccably fresh buy inappropriately pricey. Example is whole red snapper is sold by the pound - 33 bucks. So if you share one it will be over 70 bucks.
Places like Periyali is NYC are top of the game but more reasonable than Varka and better preparations. This being north Jersey however this is probably as good as it gets.
