Varanese settled in Louisville because of its successful independent dining scene, and he believes that the people of Louisville will appreciate fresh ingredients, prepared with a creative flair and a culturally diverse menu. Varanese’s eclectic menu boasts an array of options from stuffed grape leaves, and fried green tomato salad, to new signature entrées: the seared boneless pork chop, and caramelized orange salmon. Finish with a fried banana accompanied by a house-made oatmeal cookie dough ice cream dessert. This New American style restaurant will comfortably seat 150 guests between its bar, dining room and four seasons patio. The four seasons patio of Varanese is an addition to the building, which has a dramatic 20-foot slate water wall. The space is enclosed by a serpentine of glass doors, which retract to offer an outdoor dining experience. Varanese is located at 2106 Frankfort Ave. in the Historic Clifton neighborhood

Without spending a fortune, we had a great "date night" complete with delicious meal and drinks. I can't wait to go back. I enjoyed the shrimp and grits, and my date loved the pork chop.

Excellent restaurant, top notch. The food is phenomenal made from fresh, high quality ingredients. The atmosphere is romantic and vibrant. It's the best restaurants to goto for a special occasion, a date night, or just to get some amazing food. I've been at least a dozen times and never had anything less than a perfect experience.

Wonderful. A little expensive. But then, we ordered a high dollar wine... so, my fault. The pork chop is, hands down, the best food value in the city of Louisville. Extraordinary, at $20.

Varanese is such a great restaurant. I’ve eaten there several times and thought it would be the perfect place to celebrate my husband’s birthday with our “young adult” children. The staff really worked to accommodate several of my special requests! Our waitress was fantastic and assisted us with making several food choices and she was spot on. We also thoroughly enjoyed the jazz trio; it truly was a great birthday dinner for our family!

We had a decent start to the meal ordering up the beef short rib taquitos and the crab avocado balls as an appetizer. Our server was pleasant and seemed to be knowledgeable of the menu and boasted how all of the seafood was flown in from the west coast and Hawaii, always fresh, and never frozen as well as all of the meat products being local... fantastic! This is where the upside of our experience ended. My wife ordered up the flat iron steak and specified medium which ended up coming out bloody as hell and I would dare say that it was even a little under medium rare touching on the side of being flat out rare. The mushroom risotto tasted like they had pulled it out of the fridge and didn't warm it up all the way, as it was practically ice cold, not to mention seriously lacking flavor. Ever hear of salt guys! She didn't complain about the steak, but asked for another risotto and was brought out promptly, and was at a suitable temperature this time. My ribeye which I ordered medium rare was cooked to the proper doneness but seemed as though it had sat out longer than it should have before being brought out to our table because the lobster infused butter that was spooned on top of my steak hadn't even begun to melt. The mac and cheese that was served with my steak was decent, but overall the dinner was just meh! Save your money and go somewhere else!

First time at Varanese. It was 8PM reservation on V-day so place was packed. Our Server was fantastic. The food was really good. I'm not a foodie, my wife is and thought food was fantastic. Atmosphere was good. It helped once the crowd died down. But it's Vday so crowd and noise level was to be expected. Overall great place and we'll be back.

My wife and I go to Varanese regularly. We usually sit at the bar but had a reservation for Valentine’s Day. Varanese is one of the best restaurants in the city. The bar is wonderful. The staff is friendly and attentive. The food and daily specials are excellent. The ambiance and nightly jazz provide the perfect setting for enjoying a drink, sitting awhile and having a conversation. If you’ve not yet been, you’re missing out.

Finding the menu intriguing, we booked a table at Varanese. We were knocked out by the whole experience! From the moment we entered and heard soft live jazz playing, we knew we had made a great choice. We later learned live music plays nightly. The room was warm and intimate with long glass windows surrounding the front of the restaurant. Our waiter was personable, friendly, and knowledgeable.
Manager addressed every table and we had a pleasant travel and food conversation.
The food was exceptional. As this was our first stop on our trip south, I began with fried green tomatoes on Bibb lettuce and a buttermilk dressing and goat cheese crumbles. I followed with the BBQ duck confit egg rolls. My husband began with a special appetizer of fried oysters with remoulade sauce and house cocktail sauce. Perfect--crispy, light batter and not greasy. He followed with the pork chop, au gratin potatoes and sautéed veggies. Loved it. Each component of all dishes hit all the right notes for our tastebuds. We rarely order dessert, but couldn't resist "small bites"--in this case a brownie, chocolate fudge ice cream and a strawberry and cream. Good wine list with a fair range of choices and prices. Can't wait to return on our vacation journey next year! Thank you, Varanese!

Great service from start to finish. Our server was just attentive enough to where we weren’t bothered, and we were never left needing something. He had great recommendations and was more formal than service I’ve had before, which I appreciated. Live music was a little loud for my mother, but we could still carry a conversation. The food was amazing. It was one of those meals that you know you shouldn’t eat every bite, but it was so good, we couldn’t help but stuff ourselves. We shared the Crab Stuffed Avocado, amazing! We then split the romaine salad which was a caesar with soft polenta croutons which were just perfect. For dinner I had the Hawaiian Butterfish, and my mother had the Salmon; my mother said it was the best salmon she’s ever had, and the butterfish was delicious. We will definitely come back.

New American -meets a little bit of southern cuisine. Most of the dishes have either grits , or sweet potatoes with a lot of bourbon delish the dessert was bread pudding with homemade ice cream and brittle. Everything was spot on

I was at Varanese for a Valrntines date. My girlfriend and I have never been and wanted someplace new to both of us. Everything was great with the exception of my meal. I had Pecan encrusted White Bass. The fish was overcooked and dry in the middle. The sweet potatoes tasted like pumkin pie so much that it took away from the natural taste of the potatoe. My vegetables were luke warm at best. I did not complain to my server or to managemnent. I enjoyed the rest of the evening there and disregarded the entree. I WILL be back again.

We had a wonderful time at Varanese celebrating my parents 55th wedding anniversary. The food was excellent and the wait staff friendly and helpful. It was a great evening! The only downside was that it was very loud in the main dining room and we had trouble hearing each other speak. It got better as it cleared out...

I selected Energetic for the noise level above and gave the Ambiance a poor rating because the only negative in the whole experience for the five of us was the music being TOO loud, like WAY to loud.

We were there for a birthday celebration. There were two ther celebrations that evening, both larger and noisier parties than ours. The noise level was very high where we were first seated, but the management moved us to a quieter location when we asked, and were very nice about it. We appreciated that and were able to enjoy the excellent food.

Varanese is one of our favorite places! We go there for all of our special occasion dinners, as well as just a fun night out when the weather is better to enjoy eating "al fresco". We just enjoyed our Anniversary dinner there and it was wonderful! Love the atmosphere, the food, the service and really enjoy the live music! Definitely will be back again and again and have recommended several times!

It was very good. My only complaint is the server was very nice, but slowest we have ever had at Varanese. Long absences from table when we needed more drinks and waiting to order food.
