We would create menus of unusual combinations and flavours which challenged the norms.
At the restaurant we serve a twist on traditional English and French classical dishes, reinvented as vegetarian food.
The fact that it is vegetarian is not the point; in fact it's neither here nor there. The dishes we create here are forward thinking, our food is challenging. It's different. Smashing stereotypes.
You don't even have to be vegetarian.
'Apologies in advance, no pasta bake or vegetable curry.'
We didn't think we would have to put that warning on our website, but we did.
Thank you for visiting Vanilla Black and we hope you enjoy dining with us.

After reading some reviews I was expecting good food unfortunately this was not so. My party of 4 chose the 5 course taster with wine paring, some elements of which were fine but over salting, sludgy sauces, over baked profiteroles and appalling desserts (mushroom based sweets really don’t work and salt and acidic flavour crispy pasta should be nowhere near a dessert plate) left me with a bad taste in my mouth literally! Chefs were clearly trying too hard!! I expressed my displeasure to serving staff who were very sweet but did nothing to compensate. £400 later we left. I wish I’d made more of a fuss. I expect more from ‘ upmarket’ restaurants all style over substance. never again!
Fabulous vegan tasting menu. We thoroughly enjoyed our experience. The breads were particularly impressive. Definitely worth a visit!
Whilst the food was tasty, the portion was really small. I was disappointed overall, there are better value veggie restaurants of equal quality.
Great waiting staff and service. Unfortunately I was a bit disappointed with the food, perhaps just not to my taste.
Felt the vegan cheese in the starter was very runny and more like mayonnaise. The bread was delicious, as were the drinks. But the food wasn't quite up to standard.
Recommended by a client with the words 'you will not even think about the fact you are not eating meat; I took my fiance here for her birthday. We had the vegan 5 course meal and it honestly opened my eyes to what is possible (with a lot of training, skill and experimentation I would imagine). The atmosphere was great, the decorations was impressive without being 'too much' and the service was prompt and respectful without being oppressive and too formal. I look forward to coming back with the rest of my family that are actually vegetarian.
Oh it's not cheap, but once you start the food you honestly won't mind.
Excellent food, with attentive service. It was a Saturday lunch and it was only half full so it was a bit quiet
Also I personally prefer to add a tip rather than be presented with a cover charge.
We enjoyed the starter (Indian spiced potato cake) and thought it be appropriate being served in a metal dish, however it made it difficult to eat.
The mains (cauliflower and aubergine) both lacked bold flavours. There was a nice balance of textures and the course was presented well but it just needed to be punchier!
This has to be my favourite vegetarian restaurant ever. The food was innovative, surprising and delicious and the service was excellent. My advice to anyone who wants a more intimate meal is not to sit at the back of the restaurant as loud voices from nearby tables can intrude.
Absolutely delicious food. Eat every single morsel. Service was fabulous too. Going again next week. Great value for money.
Vanilla Black provides a discrete location for a business meeting as well as a special occasion lunch. The cuisine is Innovative, Beautifully presented and Delicious. This is my second visit and I am looking forward to the next.
Spectacular and creative vegan food, in a beautiful setting presented by knowledgeable, understated staff. We loved it.
Delicious and very well presented food. Everything we had was very good. It's a place for special occasions, as it's a bit pricey.
Vanilla Black is a lovely place to eat, with a calm and peaceful atmosphere. Attentive and responsive staff make sure you have what you need efficiently and charmingly.
The food is tasty and witty, with a Pina Colada cracker amuse bouche setting the tone. All three courses were delicious and ample. My highlight was the whipped Londonshire starter but my mushroom pate and sweet corn parfait were also excellent. We had a voucher (a wedding present) so were not as conscious of the price as we might have been, but £41.50 for three courses isn’t bad. If you’re tired of hunting through menus for non-halloumi related veggie options this is worth a visit.
My first time in a vegetarian/vegan restaurant and I was not disappointed. Situated off the beaten track it was quiet for Saturday lunchtime but that didn't diminish the food or the service which were both outstanding. I'd recommend.
Pretentiousness unbounded. Some nice (incredibly tiny) bits but over-priced and the wine was Tesco quality at top prices. Service was lovely but it is anywhere else too.
The food quality and inventiveness here is excellent. The staff are friendly and helpful. I would highly recommend it!
Really different food experience. Lunch or dinner, with friends or partner. Suits all occasions
I took my vegetarian friend for a birthday meal; as an inveterate meat eater myself, I was hoping to be pleasantly surprised, as the menu looked inventive and the reviews were mainly good. The restaurant itself is really nice inside, with a cosy feel, and the service was excellent and unobtrusive. The food, however, failed to make much of an impact. There were so many ingredients to each dish that I was never quite sure what I was eating, and the main consistency was light and, I'm afraid, mushy. I had a starter of iced avocado with celery and it was just an unpleasant, cold experience. The main course of celeriac profiteroles was better and my friend said the whipped Londonshire (cheese) was pleasant enough though not outstanding. The dessert menu contained a lot of ingredients which just didn't sound as though they could provide a sweet taste so we both went for the safe option of a banana icecream dish, which was OK. The white tempranillo we chose to drink was, however, really good and pretty much saved the day. I confess to longing for something straightforward such as some decent chips - but potatoes appear to be persona non grata in this restaurant. Underwhelmed.
Incredible flavours and the food was beautifully presented. The service was outstanding!
Just the best place to eat in London for high quality vegetarian or vegan food. Every option on the menu is interesting and never fails to impress.
Amazing food, and brilliant service. Love this place
Had heard rave reviews from friends but we were quite disappointed. The staff were pretty robotic and lacking in charisma. On arrival we were told that our table wasn’t ready and to take a seat at the bar. We were then left there with a wine menu for about 15 minutes before we could attract someone to order a drink from. Eventually we were seated and decided to go for the 5 course tasting menu. I’m always keen to try new vegan dishes that aren’t just meat substitutes, some of the courses were interesting, but overall it didn’t excite me.
Everything was exceptional. The food was delicious. The service was very attending and accomodating. The atmosphere was very welcoming, quiet and cosy, perfect for having a peaceful evening. Worth every penny.
There for a birthday lunch. We arrived early and they totally accommodated us. Everyone was so lovely to us and the food was delicious. All the service was non-intrusive. We had the most gorgeous experience!
Excellent food! I can still recall the flavours some two days later. Real service, good service is hard to find in London but the staff here displayed an extremely high level of skill. The overall experience was exceptional.
Always a treat to experience the wonderfully imaginative and tasty menu so beautifully presented. Thank you again
Maybe I am a vegan that's why I was not at all impressed by the cooking, one dish was too salty and others were just not impressive.
I've order the vegan set menu. Other than the bread and the beer, I did not enjoy the food. Nevertheless, I can understand if you are a non vegan, you may be impressed by the cooking.
An address that should be experienced by all food lovers, vegetarian or not. The food is outstanding, innovative and beautifully presented. Very comfortable and welcoming setting. Service was discreet, whilst being absolutely efficient. This is the best vegetarian/vegan restaurant in London.
Great vegan tasting menu.
Very delightful flavors along the journey.
Surprise favorite were the croquettes.
Charming intimate place
It’s rare to get a formal vegetarian restaurant. The food is creative.
We had 5course tasting dinner. It feels like every dish is trying a bit too hard.
Lovely place, never lets you down. Great service and the dishes are a fascinating mind blowing joy!
It was ok, wouldn’t rate the food. Looked pretty but not massively tasty. Atmosphere was pretty dull as was the decor. Needs modernising. For a vege restaurant I expected more flavours. Was interesting, zero ambiance wouldn’t go again.
Really relaxed catch up lunch with a vegan friend. Indulged in their vegan tasting menu. Unhurried. Creative food with lots of flavour and textures. Very good indeed.
Amazing food and great service - highly recommended. First time eating in true vegan restaurant and loved it
The food is amazing and they are a very nice team serving
Some dishes worked better than others; and not every dish justified its (not inexpensive price). Service and atmosphere were good for a quiet Monday evening.
Just perfect. The service is great, the waitresses knew everything about the food, super clean and the food is outstanding as always.
I returned to Vanilla Black some years after a previous visit. The menu was as incomprehensible as ever, but this time, rather than a pleasant surprise dishes were poorly balanced and thought out. Unlikely combinations proved just that. Service was slightly harassed though the restaurant was half full, and the wine list seemed oddly put together and not as satisfying as it might be. Past it’s best when so many restaurants that are not exclusively vegetarian nonetheless provide excellent and exciting options. We won’t return.
Had a fabulous meal. Utterly delish - but also wonderfully inventive and got to try flavours and things I would never thought of trying together.
The service was top notch too...my partner has an allergy and they were very helpful without making him feel in any way a problem or that it was an issue. Staff were helpful and well informed...but also very friendly.
Simply one of the best meals out I have ever had!
With a cozy setting and delicious tasting food, this is a vegetarian/vegan fine-dining restaurant that’s great value for money.
