Vanessa's Bistro 2 Ratings and Reviews
This was our second time at this restaurant, and we brought along 2 friends whom never had tapas before. We enjoyed the food and friendly service. However we found some of the dishes a bit too salty for our taste. In this visit, we also ordered the clay pot and found the rice at the bottom of the pot was completely burned (unlike the last time, when it was just perfectly slightly overcooked than the rice at the top of the pot). When we mentioned this to the waitress, she seemed to understand but her explanation was a technical excuse for the kitchen, rather than taking the feedback to the kitchen.
Loved the small dishes and the different combinations of flavors. There's enough on the menu to satisfy a variety of tastes. I also liked the dessert menu. I'll have to go back and try the pear and ginger tart. I chose the banana, peach and raisin bread pudding with ice cream. It was delicious with enough fruit to call it a cobbler.
I chose this restaurant for my Wife's Birthday because they have a gluten free menu. Actually they have lots of things that are gluten free. I found out after I made reservations that two of our friends would be joining us with their baby. I was a little unsure about keeping the reservation here, but I decided to just change it to 4 + baby and go for it.
I could tell that they don't often have babies, but there were a few families seated in the restaurant. They gave us a high chair, found an extra chair for my friends to put their baby bags on and were quite attentive. The food was great, the wine was great, the service was great. We will definitely go back!
Server was very helpful with suggestions and sequencing the tapas.
Drinks: Mojito - stiff and tasty.
Basil Bloody Mary Martini - light on vodka.
Tapas: Quail - Hard to get around the bones but worth it.
Poke - mango twist on a traditional Poke but needed more fish.
Salt and Pepper Shrimp - best thing we had. Incredibly light deep fry with veggies and a sweet&sour dipping sauce.
Filet Mignon Carpaccio - nice but the sauce overpowered the meat.
Entree: Garlic Shrimp and Noodles - shrimp were cooked perfectly with a nice sauce on the noodles and veggies
Dessert: Bread Pudding - mango and bananas made the dish.
Pecan Pie - not too sweet so you could taste the nuts.
Will definitely be going back!
This is my first time at their new place on Locust. It's smaller than the old place on Main St., but the drinks and food are just as good! It's just one dining room now, so you can't get lost in the back room like you could at the old place. Great deals on drinks and food for their happy hours from 3-6 pm. They even have a late night happy hour after 9 pm!
This trip (Saturday August 3) was our second trip to Vanessa's and our first to its new location. We went with friends and all 4 of us could not stop raving about how good the food is. We have yet to find something on the menu we do not like. The new space is smaller and quite load. Once the crowd thinned out, it was easier to have a conversation. The staff handled the setting sun really well. As soon as it had set, they opened the blinds. Parking is hard, but this was a Saturday night. Bottom line is really good food and attentive staff.
Ate dinner with an old friend at their new Locust Street location. They had only been open at new location for a couple of weeks. No kinks to work out. Food quality, servers, and ambiance were all really great. We stayed and talked for two hours and no one gave us any grief. Enjoyed their specialty cocktails, and four tapas, which were plenty for the two of us. Would dine here again.
I am happy to report that Vanessas2 has finally reopened is the same menu and quality we enjoyed so much at their old location.
My 'usual': panko fish tacos, crab salad, wok-fried eggplant, curry vegetables.
If I'm particularly hungry: add sweet potato fries.
There were 4 in our party, we ordered and shared all our plates each plate was better than the first! My only complaint was the drink that I ordered along with my friends, Cosmo and Long Island were too sweet and seemed watered down, we both sent our drinks back and stayed with wine the rest of the evening, no mixing issues there. We do love their food so we will be back!
Vanessa's has moved locations and the food has survived the experience. It still remains one of the East Bay's best Asian/French restaurants. However, the service staff has not transitioned as well. The service was spotty and the staff seemed poorly trained. In the end, Vanessa's cuisine shines through. Make sure and have the spicy coconut curry. It rocks.
Vanessa's recently moved to its Locust St. location, off of the N. Main St. thoroughfare. The food is still very good; some dishes the portion size has gotten smaller. Hopefully the move to a less busy street will not hurt the business. Its one of the better restaurants in downtown WC.
We went with friends to celebrate a birthday. The service was good, as was the food. We ordered the Fresh Spring Rolls, Maple Leaf Duck Confit Lettuce Wraps, Tuna and Salmon Poke, Coconut Chicken Curry, and Black Peppercorn Pork Loin. For dessert, we shared the Bananas Foster and the Milk Chocolate Panna Cotta. Everything was tasty and perfect! We would definitely come back.
We had a group of 6 and asked for a table in the back room. We were the only people back there and the wait staff seemed to forget about us for much of the time we were there. We had to keep going out to flag someone down to take our orders. Otherwise, the food and drinks were tasty. At previous dinners here, they were much more attentive than this time. The restaurant wasn't that full so who knows what the problem was.
I would call this Vietnamese with a California influence. Food was really good, although no pho, but I can go to Saigon Restaurant on Newell for that. Will be back and bringing friends who have never had Vietnamese before. A gentle step into the flavors of SEA.
I used Open Table to figure out a restaurant destination that would be different than your average experience. Vanessa's lived up to the task. We were blown away. Our server was great - she helped us order. All of her recommendations were excellent. The only disappointment you were out of Wellington and I was super excited to try it. But, I switched to the Panko Scallops and was pleased. Sweet and sour soup amazing. Loved the DJ!
Very disappointing visit this time around.....
Food was good.
Hostess was not friendly or warm
Server was not very helpful, asked if a particular dish was spicy, he insisted absolutely not, but when we were served this dish, it WAS spicy.
The restaurant was about 10% occupied at the time we dined (5:45), I overheard the hostess tell a party she just sat, "we'll need this table by 7" So, all these empty tables in the restaurant to choose from and she sits the party down at a table she knows she will need....NOT a kid friendly restaurant, they looked at us as if we had the plague. I have visited this restaurant a few times prior (w/o kids) and it was fine.
Had a great time with my 10 years old.
were seated on the back room which was great to carry a conversation.
the front is more noisy.
Server was accommodating when we requested sharing, really appreciated especially with a lactose intolerance. Portion was just about right for us.
This was our first visit and we didn't know what to expect. We were very pleased with everything. The menu was extensive and the food offerings were healthy and full of special ingredients. Service was excellent and the environment was perfect for a weeknight casual dining experience. The space is small (not many tables), but the owner did a great job in placing the tables so that conversations could be held without noise interference from other customers. The bar was large for the space, but in my opinion, perfect for that after-work cocktail for local workers. All in all, we had a great experience. We like the idea of small food offerings via "tapas", which allowed us to order the quantity we wanted, and not be overfed.
