Valbella Midtown Ratings and Reviews
Have you ever heard of something (or somewhere) that attempts to be fancy yet lacks sophistication. That would accurately describe our take on it. There was one hostess at the stand that was genuine. The very thin young lady at the coat check counter was weird, as is she was too good to check our coats. Honey relax, we were just at Atelier Joel Robuchon, which is the best of the best with top notch service. This place doesn't come close!
The waiter was nice, but seemed very unrelaxed. Nothing against him. I just wish that he could have executed more of a service element without any worry or inhibitions. We are all people. It's ok. I thicket hat the presentation of some of their dishes were tacky. There was way too much seasoning on the octopus. There was also this red sauce poured on my filet mignon. I feel that it should have been excluded or at least placed on the side. I wasn't in the mood to enjoy a $50+ cut drenched ins cause. It threw it off. I feel that a lot of their dishes are drenched in a way that makes it appear less elegant. The $28 tag on a Manhattan was exorbitant. Certainly wasn't the type of environment that I would expect that. If I were in Midtown and had to do a business lunch, then maybe I would return. Otherwise, I wouldn't consider it for another date night......
Went there at 7:00 pm on a Saturday evening. We know the Valbella in Meat Packing and had several good meals there in the past and wanted to try the mid-town location.
This was truly a grade "B" experience at a fairly high price point. (We hit nearly $250 for both of us with only one standard bar drink for both of us- no wine ordered.) Opened the menu to have crumbs fall out. Sent back one of the napkins for being dirty. Not a great start.
Starter of tuna tartar truly ordinary, as was my wife's shellfish starter of shrimp/crab/lobster.
Main course was a fish and a steak. Very nice but not extraordinary. Passed on dessert.
Nothing to hate but again, at this price point would have hoped for a bit more polish and attention to details, especially in an upscale mid-town restaurant.
My son lived in New York for several years and he and his colleagues compiled a listing of restaurants-this one was on the list. I was able to make quick online reservations. It was so much more than expected. My girl friend and I were together for a celebration and this place really made a great impact to the festivities. The wine list was fabulous, but we had champagne which was elegant. The food was outstanding. I had the Chilean Sea Bass and probably ne of the best I had. The service was also outstanding. I would go again and recommend it to others.
This was not my first trip to Valbella Midtown but I won't go back. Food definitely not as good as it used to be. Zucchini flower appetizer just tasted like breaded cheese. My fish was ok my daughters chicken was dry. The girls at the coat check and desk are a joke. Not friendly to us at all because we were women. Only catered to the men customers. Our server was ok. Nothing special was more attentive at first. As the night went on it was hard to get him. I gave an excellent tip which he never even came back and thanked me for. Overall it was an underwhelming experience. It's a shame because it used to be a place you could count on for excellence.
The service was outstanding from the smiles of the hostesses, who put away our wet coats and packages, to the waitstaff, who thoroughly explained the menu and were very attentive throughout the meal.
The lighting was a little to harsh and bright for my taste but my daughter said it was “clean and modern” so you decide.
The food was so delicious I took smaller bites to make the meal last longer. I got the beef filet with Gorgonzola. This had a delicious sauce with layers of eggplant, fruit, and pepper. It was such an explosion of flavor and textures. Bravo to the chef on this one.
My daughter had the penne with vodka and she said it was good also.
The meal was pricey so if you are on a budget you may have to reserved this place for special occasions but it is especially good.
Valbella is exquisite! Scrumptious cuisine, fantastic ambiance, and excellent service...we recommend Valbella to everyone. Stephen and I can't wait to visit New York City again and to visit Valbella.
Happy Holidays to all of you...with warmest regards,
Mary Jane and Steve
Excellent Food, wonderful service . A memorable evening for sure. Hope to come back when they are not having a private party in the main dining room to get the true ambience of this place since it was our first time. We had a wonderful meal, our service was terrific and they took very good care of us as we were celebrating a birthday> would highly recommend.
The Waiter was uninterested in our business. Had to call him back twice just to understand the special. He was more interested in the tables around us. The support staff was good. Called this to the attention of the manager and his response was it must be the waiters off day. He never checked on us. Disappointing.
We had a wonderful dinner date at Valbella following a show on Broadway. At 8:30 in the evening, the restaurant was relatively quiet, and the staff was extremely attentive. The Italian menu was creative and classic at the same time. We enjoyed the sommelier's recommendation for a wine that would work well with both of our entree's, and were happy to spend the money to have a really, really, good dining experience.
Unfortunately, Valbella Midtown has not been able to sustain their good reputation and quality food. I have dined there for lunch and dinner a few times over the last couple of years and it has always been a go to, for midtown Italian. Unfortunately, this time my experience was less than acceptable. I would be hard pressed to say that anything that we ordered, in our party of 6, was even moderately good. We had clients in town from L.A. and thought it would be the perfect restaurant to meet at. We ordered the Baked clams, Octopus, Pear salad, Tuna Tartare, Gnocci, Veal Piccata and Burrata, amongst a few other entrees. These entrees, in particular were awful. The baked clams were gritty and cold, the Gnocci was bland and cold & had VERY little sauce, the Veal was bland, tough & inedible, the Burrata (which used to be delicious) was tasteless. I don't want to tear apart every meal but the bottom line is it is overpriced for the quality and the food was not only cold and it was just not good. In addition, we ordered an expensive bottle of wine and the cork was compromised and the wine left you with an awful after taste. I'm sorry to say but we will not be back.
Stuffed veal chop a favorite on mine --- this one is in the top 3 ever. Chilean sea bass like butter on your tongue. Do not miss the Napolean for dessert - spectacular and I am sure the chocolate lava is equally as good. $$$ necessitate a special occasion or an expense account. Enjoy.
