Malbec - Santa Monica Ratings and Reviews
This was our fifth trip to Malbec, this time during Dine LA week. We noted that the service appeared to be more disorganized than usual, starting with confusion with our reservation, and extending to long waits to receive the menu, etc from a server who appeared to be frazzled and almost depressed. It turns out that it was Dine LA week so the restaurant was far more crowded than usual. I ordered off the Dine LA menu to take advantage of the set meal and wine pairings but in retrospect would have preferred our usual practice of sharing one of their luscious steaks accompanied by a glass of reserve Malbec that is one of the most delicious pairings I have experienced. One of the owners, to his credit, came to our table and offered free after dinner drinks and coffee which was a nice touch. We'll be back but will skip Dine LA in the future.
One of the best meals I've ever had and I've eaten at 3 michelin star restaurants all over the world. Perfection. The ambiance could be improved... it's a bit dumpy, but the food is mouth-wateringly delicious. Burrata starter. Steak entree and ice cream dessert on Dine LA.
Local restaurant with tasty, well prepared food. Service was friendly but somewhat slow.
The correct items were served but servers should know who gets what. We had the “Paella” for two which was quite sufficient in size and had lots of seafood. Paired with the House sangria worked well. The other couple had the filet of sole which was also very good.
We went for dineLA and make reservation for 2 at 12:30pm. We arrived on time but there was only one server working and we have to wait until he finished taking order for the table.
So through out the meal, service was minimal. At a point the server took the complimentary bread away and I asked for more, he answered yes but never brought anything back.
When we order, I want to know what's the soup of the day, however, the server said it's not ready yet and he didn't know what it would be. I was like, seriously? Its 45mins in service and the soup was not ready yet? So we ordered two beef turnover, a skewer with fries, and pork chop. Everything was delicious except the pork chop dish, the whole dish was super salty. I am very tolerant on salt, so when I say it's salty, its really salty.
All in all, I hope it's just an off day for them. Just the service not on par.
We had a group of 13 celebrating 3 birthdays. Malbec was so accommodating (thank you Luciano)! We had a delicious, memorable meal with extended family in a private room with a special menu they put together just for us. The ambiance was perfect, and we all thoroughly enjoyed our meal. Highly recommend Malbec!
A bit disappointed. I’ve made the reservation through Open Table for a party of four and specified that we were celebrating my mother’s birthday, the restaurant even called to confirm the reservation. But upon arrival, we were seated at an open table with three settings, the fourth setting was not provide until I requested for it. Seems like the restaurant wasn’t prepared for our reservation. Since we were celebrating a special occasion, I thought at a minimum, a birthday wish would of being provided by the staff, none whatsoever. Thereafter, the service was good and the food was tasty except for the Paella. The aroma of the rice and seafood was inviting, but at every bite of the rice, it tasted sandy/grimy. Since this was my first time tasting Paella, I wasn’t sure if the sandy/grimy was from the clams or part of the seasoning. After research on Google and asking a few friends, I’ve concluded that the Paella shouldn’t taste sandy/grimy at all.
Back to birthday celebration topic. There was a couple sitting next to us, for some reason the manager kept on checking on them, brought them complimentary champagne and even a free dessert at the end of their meal. I thought maybe the restaurant saved the surprise til the end and would bring a small dessert for my mother’s birthday, but non-happen. Needless to said, I was disappointed after spending $200 at this place.
This is simply my favorite restaurant in LA. While many eateries in LA boast great decor, ambiance and service, far fewer also have absolutely amazing food. And while many are way over-priced for their mediocre eats, Malbec is well-priced for the quality. The make the best steak in town.
food continues to be quite good.
disappointed with a very slow service ...as well as slow bar service. We had a 630 Saturday reservation; restaurant was quite empty yet there was no host at the host stand ..had a wait for a while for the host to materialize and also had to wait an unusually long time for our cocktails to be served or for Waters's to be brought to the table Can you to get more or better trained staff?
Compared to our experiences when the restaurant was called Ushuaia.. disappointing!
The steak was good, but the restaurant was too noisy by far and in addition lacked the energy that some noisy restaurants have as compensation for the noise. The wait staff was oddly uncommunicative and unfriendly. After paying a fairly large tab, we departed, walking through the entire restaurant , without a word from any of the staff. No "thanks", "hope you enjoyed it", "hope to see you again" or anything.
We will not return and will not recommend it.
I have to say that our dinner there was not pleasant at all: we were given menus that were not the same menus, the service was so- so, and the meat that my husband ordered was tough and not very good; he was disappointed because we have been there several times and he loves the meat there. But, the worst was the noise: incredible! We had to shout in order to hear one another and there was a party not far that was extremely noisy. I thought that, on a Tuesday night, we would have a quiet place to talk to our friends and enjoy our evening, but we did not
I love Malbec for the Happy Hour and I will always go there for that; in fact, I am going there today, but I don't think my husband and I will have dinner there again. Too bad, because we used to love Ushuaia/Malbec
we were very very pleased with the food and service, but the noise level was painful. we at first thought it was the party of 8 boisterous males in the corner, but after they left and the restaurant was nearly empty, it still was difficult to hear , making us shouters as well.
if we hear that they have baffled some of the area, we can return . otherwise, we are sorry to say we cannot
Celebrated my husband's 40th at Malbec and couldn't have made a better choice for dinner. I chose this restaurant based on the reviews I read, and those reviews were on point! Everything was excellent from the service to the food and drinks! We started off with the frito mixto and trio de cebiches. The cebiches was really, really good. For our main course we ordered the arroz con mariscos (for 2) and the ojo de bife (ribeye). The arroz con mariscos was delicious and had tons of seafood in it (we love seafood!). The ribeye was amazing...probably the best we've ever had, even better than Alexander's Steakhouse. Even my kids kept talking about how good it was. We ended with the flan al caramelo and mousse de chocolate. My fave was the chocolate mousse! Their cocktails are really good, too. I had something made with chili and pineapple juice and I would definitely have it again. Overall an awesome experience!
Everything about our night was perfect. It was our 5 year anniversary and we wanted a nice restaurant that wasn't super crazy expensive. This was just right. The cocktails were amazing. The server did really well with the pace of service we wanted. It was a little loud only because there was a group of 10 girls having a celebration. Other than that it was perfect ambiance. The room is really beautiful.
Love this restaurant!!! We came here for our anniversary and the food was outstanding!! The service was great and the staff was very accommodating to my gluten allergy. It was a bit pricey for a regular night out - definitely worth it though - but we will definitely return for future special occassions.
I had been to the Toluca Lake location for a girlfriend's group b'day dinner & loved it so decided to take my hubby to the Santa Monica location for our anniversary. The waitstaff, food & drinks were all excellent! We started with a Hands of God (I think that was the name!) cocktail which consisted of basil, blood orange puree, gin & an apertif whose name escapes me & an order of the beef empanadas & they were the best we've ever tasted. Amazing crust & seasoned perfectly. We each had madiera for our main dish ~ me the rack of lamb & my husband had the hangar steak. Both prepared to perfection. The polenta & spinach sides were wonderful, too. I had a nice glass of Malbec along with the main course. We finished our meal with the crepes ~ caramel, chocolate, banana & strawberries. Delicious. We live in Redondo Beach but felt the trek was definitely worth it & we will be back!
We were in town and at Malbec (at my daughter's recommendation) for an anniversary dinner. We checked out the menu on line and were very excited before the fact. All I can say is that the food was superb, our waitress Jessica was attentive and engaging...perfect...we had a great time and will return next time we are in the area. Thank you! Definitely telling friends about it!
