Malbec - Santa Monica Ratings and Reviews
A bit disappointed. I’ve made the reservation through Open Table for a party of four and specified that we were celebrating my mother’s birthday, the restaurant even called to confirm the reservation. But upon arrival, we were seated at an open table with three settings, the fourth setting was not provide until I requested for it. Seems like the restaurant wasn’t prepared for our reservation. Since we were celebrating a special occasion, I thought at a minimum, a birthday wish would of being provided by the staff, none whatsoever. Thereafter, the service was good and the food was tasty except for the Paella. The aroma of the rice and seafood was inviting, but at every bite of the rice, it tasted sandy/grimy. Since this was my first time tasting Paella, I wasn’t sure if the sandy/grimy was from the clams or part of the seasoning. After research on Google and asking a few friends, I’ve concluded that the Paella shouldn’t taste sandy/grimy at all.
Back to birthday celebration topic. There was a couple sitting next to us, for some reason the manager kept on checking on them, brought them complimentary champagne and even a free dessert at the end of their meal. I thought maybe the restaurant saved the surprise til the end and would bring a small dessert for my mother’s birthday, but non-happen. Needless to said, I was disappointed after spending $200 at this place.
This is simply my favorite restaurant in LA. While many eateries in LA boast great decor, ambiance and service, far fewer also have absolutely amazing food. And while many are way over-priced for their mediocre eats, Malbec is well-priced for the quality. The make the best steak in town.
food continues to be quite good.
disappointed with a very slow service ...as well as slow bar service. We had a 630 Saturday reservation; restaurant was quite empty yet there was no host at the host stand ..had a wait for a while for the host to materialize and also had to wait an unusually long time for our cocktails to be served or for Waters's to be brought to the table Can you to get more or better trained staff?
Compared to our experiences when the restaurant was called Ushuaia.. disappointing!
The steak was good, but the restaurant was too noisy by far and in addition lacked the energy that some noisy restaurants have as compensation for the noise. The wait staff was oddly uncommunicative and unfriendly. After paying a fairly large tab, we departed, walking through the entire restaurant , without a word from any of the staff. No "thanks", "hope you enjoyed it", "hope to see you again" or anything.
We will not return and will not recommend it.
I have to say that our dinner there was not pleasant at all: we were given menus that were not the same menus, the service was so- so, and the meat that my husband ordered was tough and not very good; he was disappointed because we have been there several times and he loves the meat there. But, the worst was the noise: incredible! We had to shout in order to hear one another and there was a party not far that was extremely noisy. I thought that, on a Tuesday night, we would have a quiet place to talk to our friends and enjoy our evening, but we did not
I love Malbec for the Happy Hour and I will always go there for that; in fact, I am going there today, but I don't think my husband and I will have dinner there again. Too bad, because we used to love Ushuaia/Malbec
we were very very pleased with the food and service, but the noise level was painful. we at first thought it was the party of 8 boisterous males in the corner, but after they left and the restaurant was nearly empty, it still was difficult to hear , making us shouters as well.
if we hear that they have baffled some of the area, we can return . otherwise, we are sorry to say we cannot
Celebrated my husband's 40th at Malbec and couldn't have made a better choice for dinner. I chose this restaurant based on the reviews I read, and those reviews were on point! Everything was excellent from the service to the food and drinks! We started off with the frito mixto and trio de cebiches. The cebiches was really, really good. For our main course we ordered the arroz con mariscos (for 2) and the ojo de bife (ribeye). The arroz con mariscos was delicious and had tons of seafood in it (we love seafood!). The ribeye was amazing...probably the best we've ever had, even better than Alexander's Steakhouse. Even my kids kept talking about how good it was. We ended with the flan al caramelo and mousse de chocolate. My fave was the chocolate mousse! Their cocktails are really good, too. I had something made with chili and pineapple juice and I would definitely have it again. Overall an awesome experience!
Everything about our night was perfect. It was our 5 year anniversary and we wanted a nice restaurant that wasn't super crazy expensive. This was just right. The cocktails were amazing. The server did really well with the pace of service we wanted. It was a little loud only because there was a group of 10 girls having a celebration. Other than that it was perfect ambiance. The room is really beautiful.
Love this restaurant!!! We came here for our anniversary and the food was outstanding!! The service was great and the staff was very accommodating to my gluten allergy. It was a bit pricey for a regular night out - definitely worth it though - but we will definitely return for future special occassions.
I had been to the Toluca Lake location for a girlfriend's group b'day dinner & loved it so decided to take my hubby to the Santa Monica location for our anniversary. The waitstaff, food & drinks were all excellent! We started with a Hands of God (I think that was the name!) cocktail which consisted of basil, blood orange puree, gin & an apertif whose name escapes me & an order of the beef empanadas & they were the best we've ever tasted. Amazing crust & seasoned perfectly. We each had madiera for our main dish ~ me the rack of lamb & my husband had the hangar steak. Both prepared to perfection. The polenta & spinach sides were wonderful, too. I had a nice glass of Malbec along with the main course. We finished our meal with the crepes ~ caramel, chocolate, banana & strawberries. Delicious. We live in Redondo Beach but felt the trek was definitely worth it & we will be back!
We were in town and at Malbec (at my daughter's recommendation) for an anniversary dinner. We checked out the menu on line and were very excited before the fact. All I can say is that the food was superb, our waitress Jessica was attentive and engaging...perfect...we had a great time and will return next time we are in the area. Thank you! Definitely telling friends about it!
surprisingly good, lamb special was to die for, chimchurri flank steak excellent, empanadas were ok but nothing special and served with no sauce, they carry an excellent Decero Cabernet by the glass but should add the Decero Malbec as well. Manager was attentive and friendly, server had no personality. Prices were reasonable given quality of food and ambience.
Great restaurant, friendly waiters, excellent food. We were probably the last people in the restaurant but no feeling of being rushed out the door. I left something behind and had to go back at lunchtime the next day - they'd hidden it away for me - and it was busier than we'd seen on our late night meal. A little bit away from other areas, we were in a hotel on 20th so it felt like we were going away from downtown but worth the trip.
This was my first visit to Malbec in Santa Monica. I love the restaurant in the Valley. My friend and I shared the clams and mussels which were delicious but could have had a little less garlic. We also shared the empanadas. The beef was fair and the cheese and spinach was great. Both appetizers were filling so we decided to share the pacific sole. The meal came from the kitchen already divided, which we appreciated. It was very hot and incredibly tasty. We were both pleased. For dessert we shared the apple tart. It was our least favorite part of the meal. The apple was nicely done, but pastry was just so-so. Overall, we were very satisfied and will certainly return.
I have a broken ankle and walked in on crutches. everyone went out of their way to accommodate me. we had the rack of lamb (swapped polenta for mashed potatoes) and the seafood paella, both very good. the bread pudding was cold which was a bit of a surprise. very enjoyable, we will be back.
We enjoyed our Saturday night adult dinner. The Argentinians know their beef. I recommend the Malbec salad, creamed spinach, fries with garlic and parsley, and the steak trio. Yes you can order all three of their meat cuts on a platter and it is perfect for sharing. Bar service was a little slow, wait staff not too attentive, but the food is amazing.
A meat lover's delight, certainly, with a flavourful glass of wine that made for a perfect celebration dinner with my son. Perfectly cooked rack of lamb, tasty wine sauce and simple, generous fresh sides. Could have used a few more servers that night, several large groups, but the waitress was moving very quickly and took time for questions. We were relaxed and well served.
Although Argentinian food is characteristically undervalued in LA, Malbec shows just how much people are missing. You must understand that meat is the heart and soul of Argentinian cuisine; if you are vegetarian, you should consider going elsewhere. The beef is expertly prepared and extraordinarily flavorful; I suggest the Salsa Argentino with Malbec reduction as one of the best $3 you will spend in a restaurant. I also strongly recommend the wine specials, two bottles priced at $45-$55 that have a depth, subtlety, robustness, and finish rivalling French, Italian, and Californian wines many multiples of their price. The room is comfortable and reasonably quiet; service has been a bit uneven. All-in-all, if you have a few extra dollars and want something different and tasty, Malbec gets my strong recommendation.
