The name Ursino was inspired by the rich history of the colonial era Liberty Hall Estate (previously called Ursino), located on what is now part of the Kean University campus. The estate boasts a 4.5 acre farm, from which we harvest many of the ingredients used on our menu. Chef Peter Turso and his staff use these ingredients to create a menu that embraces Modern American cuisine. We also support local producers as much as possible; not only in our menu selections, but in our wine, beer and cocktail offerings too.
Our goal is to provide a memorable, quality dining experience for every guest that arrives at our door. With knowledgeable and attentive service, along with expertly prepared food second to none, we aspire to be considered by our guests as one of the top restaurants in New Jersey.

                              The food was an eclectic mix of flavors, we tried the duck and steak The duck was served with a perfect mix of sweet apricot purée with fantastic tart gooseberries on the side complimenting a generous portion of meat. My wife loved the steak, which was tender. The ambiance was great, modern with a mix of old architecture and a beautiful garden and fountain out the window. Wait staff were friendly helpful and inconspicuous until needed. The hot bread was a yummy surprise, we are every scrap of food and would certainly return. It's a good choice for a special occasion or to get yourself out of the "dog house"😏

                              This is the second time here for dinner. Both times, the food was the reason for coming. Each time, however, the experience was enhanced by the charm and knowledge of the server. The servers know a lot about the food preparation and wine pairings. The ambiance of the setting indoors is quieting and tasteful. It is apparent that a lot of thought goes into the creation of the dishes, the training of the staff and the willingness to please diners. The emphasis is on farm to table and it is evident from the small touches to the creative design of the meal.

                              My friends and I had a great lunch at Ursino after touring the Liberty Hall Museum. The service was helpful and attentive without being intrusive. We almost had to lick the plates because the sauces were outstanding. Sharing some desserts gave us wonderful tastes and the server gave us each a small plate to make it comfortable.

                              No dissapointments. Ecclectic menu with moderate to small portions for Beginning(s), Main & desert. Selections were thoughtfully varied and the melding of flavors in each dish was exquisite. Everything tasted fresh. The service was friendly and overall extraordinary, ie attentive but not over attentive and conversant with the offerings. The wine list was fine. Yup!! Ursino is on the 'repeat' list.

                              The food was exceptional. The staff of students was a nice surprise, well trained, knowledgeable about the menu and refreshing. The fact that a portion (10%) over the profit goes towards scholorships is a nice bonus. Con: Desert. I had the lemon sorbet. Delicious, however for the price I would expect more than a single spoonful. All the deserts were wonderful but very very small. We had an early reservation, which I would recommend as the restaurant got very loud as the night progressed. I would expect that we will return but skip desert.

                              Modern take on a falafel which was amazing! I asked the chef where he got the pita for it and he said "back there" and pointed to the kitchen. The unsweetened iced tea is the best I've ever had, brewed perfectly. L Dessert also very good. Great care is taken in the preparation of the food here and it shows. Service was good. I love this place.

                              We went for dinner on a Thursday night, the restaurant was fairly quiet, but that meant that we had a very attentive service. Food overall was excellent from start to end. Not a complain to be had, I would recommend this restaurant to anyone. The only downside is that it's a bit off the beaten path being in Kean University and therefore not exactly a neighborhood restaurant, no matter where you come from

                              The restaurant was beautifully furnished with an impressive bar and elegant staircase. The menu, which appeared to be seasonal, was admirably assembled with a rustic farm to table approach. Tasting menu concept would have been nice if the whole table didn't need to order the same plates. Mushroom bisque was delicious; we also tried the smoked swordfish and the gnocchi which were both tasty, but not overly memorable. We tried the halibut and the venison tenderloin next. The halibut was frustratingly small and overcooked, however the venison was tasty, but accompanied by too small a portion of sweet potato. The night ended on a high note with the apple cobbler and vanilla gelato, which I strongly recommend but unfortunately the coffee left more to be desired. Suggest they go with a french press. Will be back next season.

                              A very nice ambience. Everything was delicious. I felt the service was not very attentive. Our drinks did not come out together (all beer and wine), and the last one took another 5 min to get. The wait staff was not very attentive.

                              Great place! Really good food & Stellar Service! The staff are friendly and helpful. From the moment I walked in I felt welcomed. The bar has a unique menu providing excellent spirit choices. The Serrano Margherita is a Must!!! The meal was excellent! The salmon was cooked to perfection and left me wanting more. The venison was so tender and paired perfectly with pesto and sweet potatoes. I highly recommend this place and will certainly go again. They also offer a happy hour as well.

                              We went here on new years eve because the online menu looked really nice. But we were disappointed to learn that they had a new years eve menu only and most of the food on it wasn't very appealing. It was also a set menu and cost way more than it should have for the amount of food brought to the table. The service was really not good. The waiter disappeared for long periods of time and took even longer to bring us drinks we ordered. I wasn't impressed and won't be doing back.

                              This was my first time at Ursino, and I have to say based on the reviews I expected the food to be unbelievable. The kale salad I had was so good. The cauliflower soup was unbelievably good too. Would definitely recommend it.

                              Went to Ursino to celebrate closing a sale. Had wonderful dinner. Cocktails change with the season and never disappoint. Food is consistent and inventive also with a seasonal component. Highlights this trip were the chestnut agnolotti, seared Jersey scallops, skirt steak. Wine list is also friendly and many selections are quite reasonably priced.

                              Loved the decor of ursino. The staff is very professional and versed in the menu. I wanted the food to really blow me away because this was about to be my go to. The attempt was there because everything on the menu looked delish and yes, it did taste fresh. However, the food is very bland. I had a chicken dish and my husband had the pork. Both meats bored us, too little seasoning. The root veggies were flavorful but my husbands poached apples were tasteless. I had calliflower soup that was also bland and was poured ( at the table)into a cold bowl and they did not leave spoons, so it was quite cold by the time I ate it. The cavetelli app is also bland unless you douse it in the oily sauce it came in.. Overall, I would not recommend ursino for these prices. Didn't hate it, I may go back if a group suggests but I wouldn't be excited about it.

                              My wife and i were looking for a new place to eat not far away from where we live (Maplewood, NJ). Fortunately, I tripped across URSINO'S when searching through OpenTable. It had mostly marvelous reviews so we thought we'd try it. It's in a very unusual location, right on the campus of Kean University in Union NJ. Little tricky to find but not that bad. Very modern decor inside, and very pleasant staff. Actually pretty much everyone who worked there was pleasant to deal with. Our waiter (Jean Claude?) was very knowledgable about the food, made some very good suggestions. My wife started with the Kale Salad, which was huge and excellent, while I got the Ricotta Cavatelli, which was also a healthy portion but more important, was delicious! Everything about it was perfect. For entrees she had the Local Black Bass, which melted in your mouth and I had the Hanger Steak. It wasn't quite warm enough when it came but that was quickly taken care of and was quite good. Blue cheese and bacon...mmmm. For desert we split the Ursino Orchard Apple Cobbler, at which point I was getting 'good food overload'. It was an early (6pm rez) but the place was filling up. There's glass walls and tile floor so I can see the sound might get to be a bit much with a full house. Nonetheless, highly recommend you check it out.

                              Was disappointed in the service - asked for more bread but none arrived; asked for salt and pepper but none arrived; was not offered a coffee refill It seemed to be a long wait for our food to arrive. For such a highly rated restaurant, i was disappointed. The food portions were quite small and I was actually hungry when I left. I am not a big eater so this is saying something. The prices were quite high for the food that we got. I ordered the sliced pork....it had little taste. It came with 2 very small white turnips and some potatoes (hash browns). That's it...... Dessert was a disappointment as well. Ordered the flourless chocolate cake for $9 or more but it was sooooo small. All in all, I will not be returning to Ursino's with family and friends.

                              We went very early, since we had a concert to attend at 7:30pm. We were ushered to a nice table and we got plenty of attention throughout the meal. Our waiter, in particular, was highly competent and professional. We did not experience the cold temperature that several diners mentioned, and it was a cold evening. The food was terrific - I had scallops and my husband had pork. The kale salad was delicious and larger than I expected (I am not complaining!). Great cocktails and a very nice wine list, too.

                              Have been meaning to go and finally went on our anniversary. The food was beautifully prepared, presented and served. Everything from appetizer, soup, entree and dessert were superb. We had the butternut squash bisque, roasted carrot and avocado salad, cavatelli, salmon entree and bay scallops entree, and warm apple crumble with agave sweetened gelato. Yum! Plus nicely mixed Manhattans.

                              First, I have to say that the service was excellent and the food was good. As for the ambiance, I would have to wonder whether the Architect and Decorator had given some thought as to whether, if they were having dinner there, they would agree to a table for 2 that was inches from the door to the kitchen, or a table near the rear door which led to a brightly, florescent lit, office-type lobby. In addition, the design was such that any heat rose up a beautiful curved staircase leaving the lower level where the restaurant is located in a very cold environment (evidenced by the space heaters, which provided no comfort.) All-in-all I would say that the food was not worth the discomfort of the surroundings.

                              I've wanted to visit Ursino for a while knowing of the reputation as a farm-to-table restaurant right here in Union County. My husband and I dined there to celebrate an anniversary. We had the tasting menu, which was wonderful. We were asked to broadly indicate any preferences and I mentioned that the smoked swordfish intrigued me. Other than that and avoiding the grilled octopus, we were open. We had two apps (the swordfish and a very good fall soup, I think a butternut squash), two mains (agnolotti and a delicious duck) and a lovely chocolate dessert (rocky road). The standouts for me were the swordfish, treated similarly to a smoked salmon with a mustardy sauce and pea shoots and the duck. Everything was excellent.

                              The critics are right - the food is fabulous. Everything we ate had such attention to detail, flavors delicately blended, interesting combinations. The restaurant itself is beautifully decorated and spacious. It is well enough lit but retains ambiance. The tables are spaced well so one can converse. Service was good; all the wait staff was friendly and knowledgeable. I think it's one of the best restaurants in NJ.

                              We haven't been this disappointed in a while. We confirmed an 8:30 reservation but when we got to Ursino the hostess stand was empty. After waiting 10 minutes we were led to our table where we waited ... and waited ... and waited. After 25 minutes with no menus, no water, and no waiter in sight we got up and left. The staff were clearly hustling, but the place wasn't even full. With food reviews this good, we would have expected better service.

Food very nice, restaurant pretty, but noisy with poor acoustics. Overall, expensive and desserts not really worth the $
