Urban Solace Ratings and Reviews
We had tried US for lunch several times but had never tried dinner here. Our mistake.
We sat outside on a perfect night with an attentive waiter, Arlene, who guided us to great
selections and a wonderful meal. Wine selections and cocktails are great when everyone
wants something different.
It's also a nice touch that the owner stops by the table to check in and in our case, receive
praise for the staffs great performance.
Next? We have to try the Bluegrass brunch on the weekend! Bravo!!!!!
We sat outside, nice ambiance with heaters. Both our meals were perfect, I had the duck confit entre, hard to find and it didn't disappoint ! The wine list was really good, unique selections at a reasonable price. We haven't been in years, don't know why, but its definitly back on our radar!
Friends and I went here hoping for a hopping bar scene, good food and people watching. Unfortunately the place was pretty dead - not too many people. Although the service was good and food tasty, it lacked the vibe we were expecting. Maybe it was just an off night, but it was a Saturday. We were all a little disappointed.
Every time my friends and I eat at Urban Solace we have a great meal and a delicious cocktails. It is a great neighborhood gem with nice ambience and an interesting yet reliably good menu. Emma the manager is a sweetheart, as are the waitstaff. Always knowledgeable about the food, offering quick and professional service. Urban Solace is a solid choice for any occasion!
I think my expectations for this restaurant were a tad high. The service was great initially, but the food was mediocre and not worth the price listed. I also had reserved the table and had informed the staff that is was a special occasion (celebrating a birthday), but sadly there was no initiative taken to make this evening special or one to remember - just a check at the end. Unfortunately, I think I'll be seeking out a different restaurant in North Park for future occasions. Overall 2/5.
We had a party of 7 - all arrived 10 min. prior to our reservation time but not seated until about 15 min. after our res. time. People who checked in after us were seated first??? Hostess was a little scattered, confused and not very welcoming. Finally seated at a nice inside table. Menu selections seemed to have a southern flair. Loved the appetizers - shrimp & grits, fried green tomatoes, burrata cheese. Watermelon salad was awesome! Everyone enjoyed their entrees- salmon, jidoori chicken (very generous amount of chicken), chicken & biscuits (not much shredded chicken more biscuits), duck confit (very tasty but only a tiny skimpy leg/thigh). 4 stars based on delicious food and menu offerings. 2-3 stars for service as our waitress seemed pretty stressed out during our entire dinner and didn't even acknowledge the 2 birthdays we were celebrating (even after I reminded her).
Had a double date with a couple of friends. All four of us loved our food, appetizers and cocktails. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars on the value was I thought $14 was a little pricey for 4 (slices) fried green tomatoes.
We have been here many times and have always liked everything we've tried.
Urban Solace is a memorable dining experience that I will return to. The restaurant is small and frankly noisy. However, the chef is a genius and I'm not being hyperbolic! We enjoyed a fresh, exciting salad with watermelon and organic greens. Then I enjoyed a extraordinary dish of wild salmon with vegetables and mussels swimming in a clear sauce that tasted of ginger, butter and wine with the perfect acid tone. It was beyond delicious. My husband had a grass-fed steak that he said was the best dish he's ever tasted. After the main course, we split a lime dessert with organic graham crust and cream cheese filling. It was like an explosion of layers of flavor and texture, pure delight! You must visit Urban Solace! It's fun and the food is incredible!
Appetizers, wine recommendations and desserts were good! Our entrees were a bit overcome, but not bad. The only real negative is the that the outdoor area has flies! Both times we have been here and seated outside, the flies were terrible. As soon as food was put on the table, they were everywhere!
Had a lovely dinner with my wife, mom and my 2 year old. The food was delicious and did not take long. We had our reservation at 6:45 pm and sat outside at the patio. There were other families with young kids too. Perfect spot to go on a date once the sun goes down or a nice family dinner.
Excellent food for good price. We were impressed with the service The lamb shoulder was tender and mount and delicious as was the duck confit. Appetizers of shrimp and pate wonderful. Went for our anniversary and very gay friendly. No surcharge for minimum wage increase in San Diego. We will return. BTW make reservations.
Showed about 5 mins late for a reservation for two, hostess with blue hair was very personable and extremely welcoming. Gave us the choice of sitting inside or out, no wait on either choice. Inside seating looked a tad limited, table proximity made the space look smaller than it is. Found more or less of the same floor plan on the outside patio, was sat by a two top against the interior wall constantly had to stop our conversation to acknowledge the weird things that we would hear from the two tables closest to us. Space was well lit, temperature was agreeable, never felt uncomfortable, but the tablescape felt cheap given the atmosphere and reputation I had been lead to expect.
Service: server wasn't terrible, but was overbearing at times and socially inept. Constantly running a 4-5 table section, but looked over whelmed, initial greeting was interesting, a mixture of mumbling out of nervousness and rambling about a menu he had little interest in. Saving grace was he did have solid recommendations towards their craft beers and cocktails. Ordered the drink of the day, and could not have been more pleased.
Food: presentation was well executed, wait time varied but nothing was a red flag, portions were smaller than I had expected, despite going in with extremely low expectations. Flavor combinations were spectacular, I regret not pairing each course with wine. I cannot stress enough that each plate while looking beautiful, fell short on taste, several items were genius food pairings, but were either unseasoned or undercooked. Kudos to the chef, shame on the cook. Either way after trying 5 plates only the dessert stood out.
Overall: nothing was wrong. But overall lack luster. Ambiance was simply okay, food has room for improvement, management had a strong presence on the floor which I enjoyed. Service was good but not great.
Would not recommend, there's too many other choices that simply provide a better experience around that price point.
The ambiance was nice but other than that I wouldn't waste the time/money on this place. The service wasn't great, certain dishes were ok. One of the entrees (the steak) was disgusting - we literally couldn't eat it. They never came around to see how we were to fix the dish and then didn't offer to remove it from the bill when they finally came around at the end. Please don't waste your time on this place when there are so many great dining options in the area.
We had been to US before and on a Sunday evening, it was very quiet compared to other visits. We were seated at the booth next to the front door. Once the shutters were opened, it was a nice place to sit - a bit too closed off when they were closed.
The big surprise to us was that at 7:15, to our disappointment, three of the entrees were not available: the lamb chops , pork chop and trout - wth a small, elective menu, .we opted for the hanger steak (large, and perfect for carnivores), crispy duck and meatloaf. All entrees were very good, and would recommend. Wine list was excellent, and as we had a Napa Valley sommelier intern with us, she selected the Orin Swift, which complimented our selections perfectly . . . . only bummer was that our server brought the bottle of wine AFTER our entrees had been on the table for five minutes. With it being a quiet night, we would have expected the bottle to have arrived shortly before our entrees.
