Uptown Cafe Ratings and Reviews
Our food took too long to arrive and my husband's flank steak was not cooked to order. We had an emergency at the conclusion of our meal which required us to receive our check in haste. I informed the hostess and she bagged up our leftovers, but our server did not present our bill promptly causing us to delay our departure.
The Uptown Cafe has been one of my favorites since it opened thirty some odd years ago. It is truly a neighborhood gem as well as being the owner’s “labor of love” and tribute to her family. It has a long history for excellent cuisine and scrumptious desserts, as well as a “creative “small plates menu that changes daily. The stuffed mushrooms in cream sauce is one of my favorites.
We had seen this place for years but never eaten there. We had a Louisville Originals gift card so chose Uptown Cafe. (Note to restaurant: if you say there are no restrictions for a gift card over the phone, don't change it to - oh yes, there ARE gift card restrictions once we've ordered). The restaurant has a lovely bar (dead empty) and a less lovely dining room. Very utilitarian with tables that had uneven legs and rocked. The atmosphere was odd - - dining room like a Denny's or TGI Fridays atmosphere, while the bar was totally upscale. Our server was delightful - she seemed to have all the tables in our room yet constantly checked on us and made eye contact every time she went by. She was a winner!!! She really made our meal special. We had shrimp fritters and dolmades as an appetizer. The shrimp cakes were excellent, served on a bed of smoky tomato sauce. The dolmades (braised grape leaves) had an overwhelming taste of cinnamon which means one of us loved them and the other hated them. As for entrees, the special (grouper cheek po boy) was excellent. Fish tasted fresh, was crispy and not greasy. Bread was warm and fries were double fried. The salmon croquette entree tasted great - came with a savory medley of carrots, zucchini, mushrooms and squash. The only problem was they served me a half order without asking and until we got the check I had no idea why the portion size was so small. We will probably try this place again - without the stellar service though, it's good but not great.
Uptown is one of our favorite dinner sites for joining friends once or twice a month. Their menu always offers creative selections with some local choices of ingredients.
We enjoy Monday 1/2 off promotion on bottles of wine which gives a chance for trying new selections and better values.
Our menu favorites always include the grilled salmon, chicken pasta and one of their special desserts! Give Uptown a try and enjoy!!
My wife and I visited uptown for our 13th anniversary. The atmosphere was very romantic and our sever was very helpful. Our wine and cocktails were very good. However, our entrees left much to be desired. My wife had duck ravioli, which can only be described as a bowl of salt. My wife could not eat it. I had the Coq Au Vin, which was quite the opposite. It was very bland. I actually mixed my wife ravioli with my potatoes to make one dish that was halfway edible. We had a very nice time, however, for the price I could have gone to any other restaurant in the area and had a better meal. Drinks were top notch though.
I did not appreciate the way we were seated. She had planned to seat us at a booth as she said that through Open Table she only had booths (these are not favorable seating) left.
She then sat us at a table and said
We had to be finished by 7:30. I finally told her we were being punished for using Open
Table and not calling directly. After we were seated at the table that we had to vacate at 7:30, she (the owner ) came and reseated us.
Our "week day go to place" is the Uptown. We are there almost once a week & always look forward to the food being consistently well prepared & confident the ingredients are a good quality. Service is friendly & always accommodating. Great value for cost of meals. Keep up the good work.

We had inquired whether salmon croquettes were on the lunch menu and were told they were. That was the main reason for coming. A suggestion: perhaps instead of the rice pilaf offer an option like cold slaw or small salad. That being said the meal was very good.
Another totally satisfied dinner with friends at "Uptown". A special treat since it was a 50% off bottles of wine Monday. Could not pass up the always delicious "grilled salmon", but added the special chicken chowder tonight that was a knock-out!
Several people do not recognize the total menu selection at Uptown and should take advantage of the revolving menu items aa well as standard menu items. do not miss the desserts!
We had a weekday night date night with superb food. The cheese dip was so good we wanted to use a spoon. Our entrees were also very good. The potion sizes were large. We are Hoosiers who don't make it over to the area enough but now will definitely add this place to our list. The only downside for us was that we wanted more water during our meal. We felt the glasses needed to be larger because our server would have had to come back to our table too much to adequately keep us hydrated.
