As a young assistant manager at a 5-star Caribbean resort 20 years ago, when $1000/night was unheard of, I asked the resort owner why each year we failed to make Conde Naste's "Gold List" despite being 100% booked a year in advance. He replied, "Because we don't have a pool; 25% of the score is based on a pool." I retorted, "You've got 30 acres-why don't you build one?" To which he replied, "Because if I built one everybody would use it!" I failed to see the logic. "And?" I asked. "Because people tend to do what they are most familiar with and in our case, they'll miss the beauty. If all they remember is the pool, they’ll find one closer to home next year. Here, their memories should be of (pointing) THAT sun setting over THAT Caribbean ocean with their toes in the sand. I’m not here to give people what they're familiar with, Kent, I'm here to provide something they'll never forget."

I had the five-course tasting menu, and every item was tasty, creative, and ethically sourced. The waitress was competent and friendly. I had an excellent time.
This small dining room is the bargain of the century. The food is excellent and inexpensive considering what it is. We like to do the wine pairing with the tasting menu. Highly recommend this place.
Really a special place. I brought friends for the first time to Uptown to experience their dinner. Everything was as expected. The dinner from sit down to check lasted for over three hours. Really disappointed in that. Hard to enjoy dinner when the service is so slow.
Just finished another amazing five course menu with Chef Scott. The subtleness of the flavors explode in the mouth creating a need to always go back again and again. I think we talk about this food for at least a week after we have eaten it. Hood strawberries Mmmmm. Nowhere else in Portland will you get an award winning chef, creating amazing cuisine at a ridiculous price. You would be foolish not to be a regular here!!!!!
We love this place and the chefs menu. Always had good food with a variety of flavors. Service is good with knowledgeable staff. Wine paired with the food is solid as well. We enjoy tasting wines from countries that I wouldn't normally buy from like Austria.
The new chef hit the "Ocean" theme out of the ball park! Wow! We were a bit worried, but look forward to many creative, delicious meals to come! Kudos.
Outstanding; they have a new chef Scott, and he does a excellent job. Presentation is superb, and each plate was so nicely built I don't understand how this place is not booked month in advance. In my opinion this should be easily a one star Michellin. Every two weeks they change the five course menu, can't wait for the next one. Definitely worth every penny.
Chef's tasting menu was incredible. The wine pairings were even better. Loved the Oceans theme. Well done! Great service. Good beer before dinner.
We had the 5 course tasting menu to celebrate our anniversary. We enjoyed the "Ocean" theme, the creativity & presentation, as well as the variety of flavors and textures. It was great fun to read the menu and try to anticipate what might actually by on our plates when they were served! The wine pairings were excellent. Touches of bright colors and fresh, raw ingredients would be a nice addition.
They have a new chef. Think his name is Scott. Great chef. The 5 course dinner was really excellent: food was great, plating was beautiful, Michelin-star dinning experience, and for less than $40 !!
Fantastic meal !!!
Wow. Chef Scot takes food to a whole different level in his five course legume menu. Such a cacophony of flavors stimulating the senses
Some of the food excellent but service V_E_R_Y slow and no sound buffering from all the activity around the restaurant area
My friend wanted a little bit of everything, but not too much of anything, and it all to be fabulous. I knew just the place. Uptown Billiards Tasting Menu is to die for. 5-10 bites per course. You enjoy the whole thing and are never STUFFED, but 100% satisfied. By the 5th course, though, you are close to stuffed. :) Try the wine pairings! It's a deal and never disappoints! I love the rotating menus and the themed courses. The ingredient selection and menu preparation is ridiculously delicious. The presentation alone feels wildly indulgent. Go! Take Everyone! So Good!
Uptown billiards features a small curtained dining room with a nice selection of well made small and large plates and a weekly tasting menu, a well-stocked bar, a nice jazz soundtrack in the background and lots of well maintained pool tables in two wood-paneled rooms. Service is friendly and prompt but you can linger. A great evening of food, drink and pool. What can beat that?
This is a culinary experience that takes your breath away! Every single dish in the tasting menu "The Legumes" was spectacular! The wines were just the right accompaniment for the food. The pace of serving dishes, the way we were waited was very comforting and well- suited for the occasion. The time and money worth spending. Thank you, Kent and Co.!
The new chef is doing a nice job. Great meal and overall experience.
Great service and wine pairings from owner and his daughter, Zan. New chef is outstanding.
The pre-arranged meal was excellent and the service was very attentive. The only negative to this night was parking in this neighborhood. It's very crowded.
The five course meal is exceptional. The service is friendly, efficient and knowledgeable. One of my favorite spots in Portland and a place we'll keep coming back to for year ahead.
Fun and full of activities.
Wow! We went to a five course chocolate themed dinner, my wife also had wine pairings with each course. The food was amazing! Our server was very attentive, also knowledgeable on the wine pairings and their origins. Very cool atmosphere, highly recommended!
I've been going here for years and it just keeps getting better. The 5 course dinner with wine pairings is innovative, seasonal and unique. A must try!
I have been here on many occasions. The service and food never disappoints. Do the wine pairing meal. It is excellent.
Another delicious visit to experience the five course tasting menu. It's the just the right amount of food; every course is artfully presented and I'm always amazed how they make everything from scratch in their tiny kitchen. A favorite!
Overall their rating drops because they do not provide a menu for their seasonal five course meals. It makes it difficult for many people that have dietary needs. Please be considerate of this.
As usual the food was creative and perfectly prepared. The theme of the special menu was chocolate, it was artfully inserted into every course, what a treat. These special tasting menu dinners are not to be missed.
This place is a hidden secret and I am so happy to have had the opportunity to experience the food. It is amazing and if you want a true food experience this is the place!
The food was excellent. We enjoyed the time in between courses so we can talk and review the different dishes. The waithelp was very knowledgeable about the wines and what the different dishes that were being served. We would recommend this restaurant to our friends and family. The only negative was the climb to the upstairs part. We are panning to go again after the holidays.
Foodies have to go for the Prix Fix, the root vegetable was the best meal in a year!
The five course tasting menu, featuring pears and apples, was outstanding! Presentations were beautiful and were served on various sizes and shapes of plates. Each course provided a surprising and delicious approach to the flavors of fall. Just when we think UBC can't get any better, they surprise us with their creativity. It's our favorite restaurant in Portland and one we return to often.
Innovative cuisine paired with appropriate wines. Always a novel taste experience.
Creative 5 course tasting menu. Excellent presentation.
All courses delicious and unique.
Noise level from billiard/pool section can be loud.
this restaurant consistently has some of the best food in portland. the set menu changes every two weeks and is always outstanding. the desert featured in this tasting was the best desert all 4 of us had ever had.
Chef's menu is the best value in Portland
The peach tasting menu was great. Each dish outperformed the last. The sound level in the adjoining billiard room definitely increased around 8:00 PM so I would recommend an earlier start time.
Chef Peter outdid himself with the menu focused on peaches in every course. We raved with friend afterwards about how delicious it all was! We will be back-repeatedly! Looking forward to the next menu already.
The Uptown Billiard's Club is a fascinating place that more people need to know about. When you drive down 23rd Ave., you will see a sign and a doorway - nothing else to indicate that inside is one of the best Portland restaurants. When you open the door, you face a dark carpeted stairway that makes one believe they are either in the wrong place or entering a speakeasy. Two stairways up, when you enter the bar area, you now realize that this is a hidden treasure!
Yes, there are lots of pool tables - but we were there to eat so we were led into a small intimate alcove with a lovely ambiance and this is where the adventure begins.
The chef offers two menus; one traditional with great choices and a five course tasting menu that features one specific food item. This menu changes every two weeks. The theme this week was "berries" so each course featured a fresh summer berry. The tasting menu is prepared with complex pairings that are original, delicious, and beautiful to behold. Besides the food tasting menu there is also a wine tasting that is specially chosen to complement the dish. You can find the menus on their website. Don't miss this place - it's fabulous!
There were 4 of us and each one ordered the Tasting Menu...This time it was all about berries. Last month is was all about tomatoes.
I mean if you have never been to Uptown Billiards and have never ordered the Tasting Menu...you are missing out!!
This is a gourmet gem in the most unsuspecting location---a billiards place? Say what? Do NOT let that sway your opinion or you are definitely missing out!!!
The cocktail menu is pretty sassy as well.
Nice experience but diners need to know they have to walk up a levels of stairs.
An incredible place.
