Upstream - Charlotte Ratings and Reviews
This was Brunch with another couple and it was excellent. Our server also had responsibility for a huge family table, so he was stretched a bit thin, but otherwise all was suberb.
Upstream continues to be my favorite seafood restaurant in Charlotte and their menu items and daily specials are fantastic.
I hosted a business dinner for 4. we were seated on time. service was excellent. wine list was great. food was excellent. 2 of us had the Tuna and 2 had the Sea bass. no complains on the food. My coworker and I both mentioned(after dinner) that we were starved..LOL. Portions were very small. Felt like I had an appetizer for diner. I actually hit McD's on the way home.
A perfect place to celebrate two 50th birthdays. The craft cocktails were excellent but we all agreed that the MM Vanilla Old Fashioned was the best. Nice wine list. Beer tap selections were local and suited to the seafood. For appetizers we split three. Half the table loved the mussels and we all loved the calamari. Tuna poke was a bit light for 4 people to share but good. The Sea Bass is always an excellent entee choice but the Wasabi Tuna may be a new favorite. Dessert paired with port flights finished the evening perfectly.
Our server was a perfect balance of unobtrusive and attentive with a charming personality and excellent knowledge of the menu.
Upstream is a great place for delicious healthy food and a relaxed evening. We had 4 of us in a booth on a Friday night and the restaurant was quiet enough to where we could talk without yelling or straining to hear the person across the table. We ordered the sea bass and grouper and both were absolutely delicious although the portion sizes are a bit small considering these entrees were close to $40 each.
Upstream Charlotte was recommended by our lunch waitress at an uptown establishment. She did not disappoint. I had the Grouper and my wife had the Fresh Alaskan King Crab. Wow what a meal. Only downside was the price of the drinks, a little heffty, but not enough to stop us from going back next Charlotte trip.
This was our first time at ‘Upstream’ and the food, which is the only thing I consider when choosing a restaurant, was just ok. So for $250+ tab for 3 people I expect a little more than ok.
The wait staff was very attentive, no complaints there, but all 3 of us felt the food was lacking in substance and flavor. The atmosphere is very pretentious and will definitely not go back.
Excellent in every way. From hostess to final check it was memorable. Very good and intelligent service. Great wine list. Calamari appetizer was the best I have ever had. Very creative and amazing fish dishes. Sunday brownie dessert was to die for. Will come back to Charlotte more often just to dine here.
Upstream continues to amaze over the years. Best, freshest seafood along with inventive sushi, restaurant style versus "bar" style. Great wait staff, attentive but not "too" and very knowledgeable. The specials always please. Order the Halibut, when in season or the Grouper, any time. You will not be disappointed.
The food was good. We had a problem with the raw oysters. We ordered the chef special which was 12 Premium West Coast Oysters and the last two in the bunch tasted terrible. They offered to give us 2 new ones to replace the bad tasting ones that we had but I took a pass since dinner was on it's way. Other then that everything was great. Nice place to go if you have a special night.
Stranded by American airlines on our way to Ireland, we needed a special place for dinner to unwind and have a special meal. Finding"Upstream" was a genuine lode of gold service. Food was fantastic as we devoured the grilled octopus starter and the Pacific tuna on a bed of peppers and vegetables. Our server was articulate, helpful with suggestions and over abundant with accommodations.
What a perfect evening after the connection fiasco.
Then we left for the Emerald Isle the next day. And American airlines followed suit by running out of beer and wine after only one beverage run. Who ordered that inventory supply?
Maybe the staff at "Upstream" could offer a tutorial in customer service.
Crab cakes come on a bed of mayonnaise- this is not listed on the menu, and terrible if you don't like mayo based things. Gazpacho didn't taste as fresh as I had expected. I expected the sushi to be better since the reviews were good, but I was disappointed. So much rice, you couldn't taste the fish. The crumble dessert did not have a crumble taste- it was mushy. The compote on top of the walnut cake tasted sour, like it was bad- had to scrape it off.
Normally I have a basic rule about seafood - If the restaurant isn't in the vicinity of the actual Ocean/Sea then I usually will not go i.e. It would be hard for me to eat Halibut in Kansas! Even though North Carolina boarders the Atlantic, Charlotte is ~6 hours from the coast. I thought I would give it a try.....well, what a pleasant surprise! Their seafood was fresh and prepared well . I have been twice now and have had the Sea Bass and Dover Sole (which was a special that night). Each time I had the "Ceviche of the Day" which was really good - I would go back just for that with a couple of drinks at the bar. If in Charlotte NC I would not pass the chance to sample their dishes.
This restaurant always hits the mark! They have the best calamari we have ever had! Friendly staff and great atmosphere. I had the sea bass which was delicious and my date had their salmon special. The server didn't mention that the salmon special had "kick" to it and my date isn't a spicy person, but made due. The server asked and reported back to the manager who came by and acknowledged, apologized and made it right. He certainly knows how to take care of the customer and ensure that we would be back.
