Actually did not seem like the same restaurant I have been to before.

What is going on? If there was ever such a thing as a minimalist menu they have it.

Uninspired food selections.

After many years of being a favorite that possibly was my last visit.

New menu is very limited. Service was slow in the bar as well as the dining room. Have been to this restaurant many times, probably won’t be back.

Really disappointed with the new menu (new chef). Upstream has always been a go to restaurant but wont be back with new menu. Maybe just working out the bugs with the new items.

They completely changed the entire menu to a modern Japanese type food versus the contemporary American seafood . They had no description of the new items other than 1-2 names with no description of what exactly it was.
The food was good, but if your changing the entire restaurant, then change it and advertise that. I went there with the expectation of (A) and got something completely different.
Its too bad they eliminated everything. What originally made upstream so great was they constantly changed the menu based on fresh items. Now bring your chop sticks!

Excellent Valentine's Day dinner at Upstream. My wife's order was sold out so the manager personally came by to explain, walked her through replacement options, created an entree for her using a small plate feature and comped her dinner and dessert. Can' ask for better service than that! Our only complaint was that the new menu no longer includes their "to die for" mussels in smoked tomato broth. That was our favorite menu item and perhaps Charlotte's best appetizer. Sad to see it gone.

Upstream has changed their menu and their concept. The menu is limited and the style of cooking produces strong smells and smoke that their ventilation doesn't handle well. If you have asthma, beware. Portions are smaller. This was our "go to" place in Charlotte, sadly, no more.

We arrived and the restaurant was still fairly empty at 6:15. There were about 5 staff me members standing at the front door. We were seated at the table closest to the door on a busy section. There were plenty of nicer more private tables but when we asked to move the only table they offered was in another room which was brightly lit so we stayed at the table near two entry points.
The food was mostly very good. Our waitress was good but could have been more knowledgable about the new menu. However the staff was very accommodating and attentive.

My husband and I went here for Valentines Day. We had a great time. Our favorite starter was the Rock steak, which you cook on your own at your table. Very cool. We tried several appetizers and ordered from the Raw Bar. The portions are purposefully small. My entree was the Scallops which were divine. The atmosphere was fancy and classy. When it’s pleasant outside, I prefer their outside seating.

ran out of the wine we chose first. next choice of wine had the wrong year on the menu. 2015 instead of 2014. luckily it was quite good. the salmon came a tad under-cooked. despite a couple of misses, my friends & i had a good time & great meal. this has been our 2nd visit here. hopefully the 3rd visit will b much better.

Having eaten here in the past, we anticipated another wonderful dinner. It was somewhat disappointing. The filet was grossly underdone, even after it was returned and we were only minimally comped. Service was very good. They are in the process of revamping their menu and are removing some of their best selling dishes.

They were in transition with a new chef. I tried the 39 dollar “house specialty,” sea bass, and was fine with the small portion, but it was way over cooked and a bit tough. My mother had salmon, and really enjoyed it. I would have told the kitchen it was over cooked, but my mother really wanted me to have a good time, so, I faked it. I ordered the server’s recommendation of the scallops which were really salty to the extent you could not enjoy the subtlety of the delicate scallop flavor and all you got was the texture ( which was cooked better than the bass).
The dessert menu must have been truncated as well as there was not much on it besides crepe brûlée ( yawn) and gelato.
There could also be more options for non-alcoholic beverages.

We took our 4 year old daughter there for a Valentine's Date Night. Could not have asked for anything better, even though it is a more upscale restaurant, everyone was wonderful with us. Our waiter was exceptional. He did "magic" for her and treated her like a princess. He made origami for her and had a special meal for her. Our meals were awesome and the wine list is amazing. Will definitely be back!

Love this restaurant. Have been there many, many times by ourselves and with friends. Last night, our food was delicious however, the wine we ordered off the menu was not what they brought to the table. This has happened on other occasions as well. The staff was very apologetic and brought us an appetizer. The management might want to update the wine list as it is not good practice to pawn off a wine with a different date. We were a little pushed as well. The food is great but it is not pleasant to be rushed. We will be back again often but these are things that irritate customers who might not return so easily. Upstream is one of our go-to restaurants and especially with a new chef and new menu, I hope these small items are discussed and taken care of.
