Food was very tasty but we were disappointed in the quantities. We ordered duck and it came with two small slices, we thought the server misheard and thought we wanted to share. It was a joke how little duck the meal included when it cost so much. We ordered donuts for dessert. We checked that it said donuts plural because of the small duck portion. The dessert came with one small donut and the center as a donut hole. For $8 you could have gotten a dozen donuts! It just seemed ridiculous what we got versus what we paid. We’ve gone there before and the portions were great! It seems like they are trying to cut costs so they reduced the portions. Very dissatisfying as customers and we will not be returning.
Please note: If selecting this location for brunch, they no longer have a brunch buffet as listed on OpenTable. We only had a beverage and then proceeded on to a better brunch location. Server explained they have been having trouble with OpenTable to communicate that they do not have a brunch buffet any longer.
New menu is too limited. No longer the best seafood restaurant in Charlotte. Sad, but probably won’t be returning anytime soon.
Great food. Great cocktails. Great service. Portions were not huge. Definitely order appetizers.
Dinner with the fiancé. We enjoyed the new menu. Wish the dessert menu was more appealing.
Been here several years ago, very disappointed in the very limited seafood options and small portions. Food quality was good, not nearly as good as in the past, probably will not return.
Portions were so small. New menu and not very good! We loved this restaurant but will never go again.
We ordered edamame (portion was TINY), crab croquettes (great flavor but they were cool inside, I'm thinking there were previously frozen, which is fine but they need to adjust cook time/temp). We all ordered sushi. I liked mine just fine but my 2 friends did not like there's at all. The service was good and great atmosphere.
The worst brunch menu ever! Only four tables taken in the entire restaurant for almost two hours. That should have been sign. Definitely no return trip! UGH!!!
Very disappointing. Music too loud for 10am sunday morning. Food not impressive. Service very nice but food was well below our expectations for the price. You need to reevaluate your brunch menu entirely.
Food portions were small for the fish items. Been several times and loved each time. This time was disappointed in the main entrees.
Had not been in years so we were curious to get back. Was outstanding. Th food, service and ambiance was first rate. Really nice experience.
Love the rock app but everything is so expensive
The restaurant has a new revamped menu and my dining party of eight were not happy. I have been patronizing this establishment for more than a decade and this is my first negative experience.
Great- wish menu was a little wider...
There is a new chef with a new menu. The new menu is excellent and our meal was fantastic!
The new menu is to dye for! The Asian infused style of cooking the new chef has introduced to upstream has taken this restaurant to another dimension
We have visited Upstream many times. However, this occasion was very different! They have renovated their entire menu. More importantly the service was sub par at best! It was very difficult to be acknowledged long after we were seated. Once a favorite, now a part of history!
Tonight we celebrated a birthday at Upstream that I do not think could’ve been topped! Our server was delightful, professional, and an excellent introduction to amazing fare! We were three and shared “The Rock”, which was delectable and fun as we actually cooked our meat on a stone! For the main course we shared lettuce wraps, but with a fish, sans eye, with chili oil, herbs and a salt mixture- this dish was the most fun! Truly a wonderful experience and I promise to return for my birthday if not before!
Upstream is reinventing itself. It continues to become more of an Asian fusion type restaurant which the menu definitely reflects. We prefer a more traditional upscale seafood restaurant And therefore will not be frequenting the restaurant as often.
With a new chef came a new menu; non of the favorite dishes and pricey compared to the previous menu. This was a "go to" spot for us on Friday night but unfortunately we are looking for an alternative.
disappointing very limited lunch menu, fine for dinner
My husband & I both ordered the scallop entree. We each got 3 scallops about the size of a nickle in diameter. The sides were mushrooms and cauliflower. The mushrooms were chopped to the size of half of a green pea and the amount would not have filled a thimble. The cauliflower portion was one floret - shaved. The amount of food on the plate was laughable. I might add that my husband and I are VERY moderate eaters and tend to usually have food leftover. The size of the portions and the price charged was ridiculous. We were dining with a senior friend/business colleague who specifically asked for the garlic juice be left off his plate--the server still tried to poor it over the food when delivered. Our friend had asked to substitute an item for the mushrooms-- told yes, then told you were out of them; there was another item as well (I don't re-call) that you were out of for his entree. Our server, a young lady, was not very intuitive -- she interrupted numerous times right in the middle of very serious conversation. As our friend was asking about the menu items, she was gathering and continuously clinking extra wine glasses together . She was a bit condescending to our fellow-diner as well when he was trying to determine his meal choice. This was on a Tuesday night when you were not very busy. I doubt we will be back due to the service we received in addition to the unbelievably small portions.
Birthday celebration, very nice!
Mark was a fabulous help with the new menu and offering really good suggestions!
Miss the old menu. Will not be going there again any time soon. Got very little for your money.
Service was good but you had to ask what food was on the menu.
disappointed at the new menu - all of my favorites are gone - only two salads... Huge price jump
Was OK. Not as good as it's been. seems the new menu is a work in progress.
Actually did not seem like the same restaurant I have been to before.
What is going on? If there was ever such a thing as a minimalist menu they have it.
Uninspired food selections.
After many years of being a favorite that possibly was my last visit.
New menu is very limited. Service was slow in the bar as well as the dining room. Have been to this restaurant many times, probably won’t be back.
Really disappointed with the new menu (new chef). Upstream has always been a go to restaurant but wont be back with new menu. Maybe just working out the bugs with the new items.
They completely changed the entire menu to a modern Japanese type food versus the contemporary American seafood . They had no description of the new items other than 1-2 names with no description of what exactly it was.
The food was good, but if your changing the entire restaurant, then change it and advertise that. I went there with the expectation of (A) and got something completely different.
Its too bad they eliminated everything. What originally made upstream so great was they constantly changed the menu based on fresh items. Now bring your chop sticks!
Great food and service!
Excellent Valentine's Day dinner at Upstream. My wife's order was sold out so the manager personally came by to explain, walked her through replacement options, created an entree for her using a small plate feature and comped her dinner and dessert. Can' ask for better service than that! Our only complaint was that the new menu no longer includes their "to die for" mussels in smoked tomato broth. That was our favorite menu item and perhaps Charlotte's best appetizer. Sad to see it gone.
Upstream has changed their menu and their concept. The menu is limited and the style of cooking produces strong smells and smoke that their ventilation doesn't handle well. If you have asthma, beware. Portions are smaller. This was our "go to" place in Charlotte, sadly, no more.
We arrived and the restaurant was still fairly empty at 6:15. There were about 5 staff me members standing at the front door. We were seated at the table closest to the door on a busy section. There were plenty of nicer more private tables but when we asked to move the only table they offered was in another room which was brightly lit so we stayed at the table near two entry points.
The food was mostly very good. Our waitress was good but could have been more knowledgable about the new menu. However the staff was very accommodating and attentive.
My husband and I went here for Valentines Day. We had a great time. Our favorite starter was the Rock steak, which you cook on your own at your table. Very cool. We tried several appetizers and ordered from the Raw Bar. The portions are purposefully small. My entree was the Scallops which were divine. The atmosphere was fancy and classy. When it’s pleasant outside, I prefer their outside seating.
ran out of the wine we chose first. next choice of wine had the wrong year on the menu. 2015 instead of 2014. luckily it was quite good. the salmon came a tad under-cooked. despite a couple of misses, my friends & i had a good time & great meal. this has been our 2nd visit here. hopefully the 3rd visit will b much better.
Having eaten here in the past, we anticipated another wonderful dinner. It was somewhat disappointing. The filet was grossly underdone, even after it was returned and we were only minimally comped. Service was very good. They are in the process of revamping their menu and are removing some of their best selling dishes.
Delicious food and beverages! Made our experience very enjoyable! Would recommend and go back!
