Upstream - Charlotte Ratings and Reviews
Dining at Upstream was everything you could hope for. From the moment we walked in the door we experienced excellent service, fine food, and wonderful ambience. Our waiter could’ve been a sommelier and guided us towards a wonderful wine selection that was a great value. Definitely a go back place!
I've passed the restaurant multiple times for the past four years in Charlotte and didn't even notice it. A friend recommended it and we came to celebrate a birthday. I loved the creative sushi menu and the method in how the restaurant operates. All seafood produce is bought fresh on a weekly basis. We went on a Sunday evening and certain fish products were sold out.
We started with raw oysters and new dug potatoes. The raw oysters were good, but not the best I've had in Charlotte. For dinner, I had the Sake Marinated Wild Sea Bass with lobster dumplings, bok choy, shiitake, shiso mirin broth for $39. The plate was very decorative, but the bass portion was very small. I expected a much larger portion for that price. The sea bass was wonderfully prepared however. Loved the mushrooms and the broth in the dish. The lobster dumplings were a tad undercooked. We've also ordered a side dish of bok choy, I wasn't impressed with the look/taste of it. I also had sushi - Bamboo Roll $12(tuna, salmon, cucumber, red pepper, wakame, avocado) and Seasmoke Roll $16 (seabass, smoked salmon, tempura tofu, bbq eel, wasabi caviar). The bamboo roll looked beautiful (covered with cucumber peel instead of seaweed) and tasty, the only thing I would change is not to include the hard peel portion so much, I almost chocked on one. The Seasmoke roll had a peculiar fish taste to it. I disliked it. The server offered free desert since I didn't like a dish. That was a nice surprise. We split the Espresso Panna Cotta with soft cream, chocolate covered espresso beans, dark chocolate cigars. It was a cold dessert, didn't know that from the name of the dessert, but it was a pleasant surprise too. Overall it was a good experience, now we know what we like/don't like and what to order next. We'll be back. Thank you for the experience.
Still one of my favorite restaurants. Excellent drinks. Nice wine selection. Food was excellent. Service was a little slow. Server was unaware that our entrees took about 25-30 minutes to arrive. We were enjoying the evening so the wait was inconsequential. However, it is not what I expect from Upstream. Overall, still high on my list
Stopped into Upstream on a late Saturday night. Was hoping for some shellfish and thought this would be a great place to check out. Our experience was very good. Cocktails and wine were great. Had a mussels appetizer that was excellent. The food overall was really good. We had a Sea Bass in a Miso broth and Ahi Tuna encrusted in wasabi. Both were excellent. The real downfall here is that we really wanted cooked shellfish... Obviously, we had the Mussels as an appetizer, but there was nothing else on the menu that was cooked shellfish. They did have extensive raw shellfish selection, but it was 30 degrees outside and we wanted something warm. My only complaint is the limited menu. However, everything we had was really good. I do anticipate that we will be back.
If the Sea Bass at Upstream isn't the best dish is all of Charlotte then I want to know what is... my wife and I love good food and we've been fortunate to visit most of the well respected restaurants in Charlotte and nothing has topped Upstream's Sea Bass. Well done once again Upstream.
As always, Upstream’s kitchen and staff delivered a great dining experience. The food was innovative and perfectly prepared, and the ambiance was quiet and enjoyable. The staff, in particular, was very attuned to the business nature of our dinner. We will certainly continue to frequent Upstream.
I took my husband for his 60th birthday because it's one of our favorite places for special events. We LOVE oysters so who can choose between oysters on the half shell and the oyster salad? Problem solved, we ordered both! Also love the calamari! The service was impeccable as always. Thanks for a wonderful evening!
We go to Upstream every year for Thanksgiving. They put out a varied and delicious spread of traditional and modern Thanksgiving delights that would please any palate. Because Upstream is a seafood restaurant, there is also shrimp, oysters and sushi! I highly recommend it.
This was Brunch with another couple and it was excellent. Our server also had responsibility for a huge family table, so he was stretched a bit thin, but otherwise all was suberb.
Upstream continues to be my favorite seafood restaurant in Charlotte and their menu items and daily specials are fantastic.
I hosted a business dinner for 4. we were seated on time. service was excellent. wine list was great. food was excellent. 2 of us had the Tuna and 2 had the Sea bass. no complains on the food. My coworker and I both mentioned(after dinner) that we were starved..LOL. Portions were very small. Felt like I had an appetizer for diner. I actually hit McD's on the way home.
