The day before our dinner, Upstairs called to say they no longer had a liquor license. (Apparently, they gave it up two or three days before.) Then, when we arrived, we were told they were closing the next day for rennovations—and the staff had only just learned of the plans. As a result, many of the menu items weren't available, we had to wait more than an hour for our food, and the atmosphere was strange with the empty bar taking up much of the front room. The food was very good, as usual. Nobody makes brussel sprouts like they do.
Excellent service, food took a long time though. food is good not great. Ambiance is good, not pretentious
Upstairs’ food was exceptional as usual. I found another favorite meal tonight, the salmon sandwich. I took note of the mellow music and welcomed low level of noise even sitting near the bar. This was probably because it was a week night and being Valentines Day. Nonetheless it was refreshing. A very good night, indeed.
Waited an 1.5 hours for the food to arrive. It' clear they forgot about our order. Server never acknowledged our long wait or provided us with an update. My husbands food was bought out and just plopped down in front of him with zero explanation - my food never arrived. After a long wait, I flagged down our server to ask about whether my food will be coming? My husband had almost finished eating. A couple minutes later , she brought out my cold food with no explanation or apology. This might fly at a cheap noodle bar, but it's totally unacceptable when you're paying $36.00 for a main. I have to say, we were offended by this and left us with a terrible impression. The server never checked-in to see how the food was, or offered any compensation/apology for ruining our Valentine's Day dinner.
As far as the food was concerned, the cocktails were great - but, the fish was underwhelming and my gnocchi was a disgrace. I was served cold, DEEP-FRIED, soggy, potato dumplings bags. The lamb ragu it was served with was okay, but lacked flavor.
It's a shame, as a Montclair local - we were looking for a good place we can frequent where we can get dinner AND a drink - but, unfortunately this isn't it!
We have been there several times and when we arrived we were seated in the center isle where everyone would walk passed. The tables were not set up in the way on our previous visits, but on this occasion the only table for 2 left was the table they decided to place in the center isle with all of the other tables surrounding the wall. We booked our reservation a day prior and when we arrive they gave us the worst seating in the room. We did not stay an eat since we were very uncomfortable with the seating. The food is normally very good but the seating was so awkward and uncomfortable that we did not stay.
Waiters were chatting with other the whole time. Annoying.
Upstairs is one of our go-to places when we want great food or to bring friends and treat them to Jersey’s best. Upstairs never misses the mark. Great cocktails or a few interesting draft choices followed by food that the chef’s prepare with care and seasoning. Dishes come out fast and hot from a kitchen that looks calm and collected. Ask for a table near the open-air kitchen and watch the Pros at work. Don’t forget to thank them for an excellent meal.
The food was perfectly prepared and fresh. While it was quiet in the back room when we first arrived , as it filled up the noise level made it difficult to hear each other at our table. Except for the noise level it is a great restaurant.
Not worth the money. Much better restaurants in the area that are not as expensive and with better tasting food.
Very Cool place in the middle of nowhere hard to find. great staff. Just at Chefs tavble last night. Same difficulty finding the restuarant., but once youfind it it was worth it. great food and atmosphere
SO my husband and I have been using Open Table for new finds. We thought Upstairs sounded just right for us. We has a 7:30 reservation on a Saturday night and we were able to be seated immediately. That was the only good thing about this entire experience. This place is supposedly known for its cocktails. I ordered a Clooney Negroni and my husband a Jack Daniels and Ginger Ale. My drink had not been mixed properly, nor had the Jack and Ginger, seriously?? We ordered Red Sangria which is on the specialty cocktail menu and were told 15 minutes later it was unavailable. Strange for s Saturday. The waitress suggested I try to Rose Sangria which was also on the special menu only to be told another 15 minutes later that the Rose Sangria was also unavailable. Both appetizers were very good. The Sea Bass I ordered for dinner was undercooked My husbands meal, a Pork Chop, was cooked very nicely. Needless to say, this was our first bomb using open table.
The food is very good. It is not cheap. Drinks are very pricy. The energy is a little on the low side (we went early on a Friday evening so not totally unexpected). The service was a bit uneven --- at $4/cup for coffee I would think it could come out hot or that the waiter wouldn't be awol so I couldn't get a warmup.
The restaurant is good, very small menu but good. I would say the downfalls are the nasty cold draft you get from the door. In the winter you don’t want to be freeZing sitting at the dinner table. Bar is cool atmosphere! Drinks were good!
appetizers were good but dinner was lukewarm at best.
Great place. We will be returning.
Love the bar. Friendly staff and good service. Food was excellent! Did not feel rushed and the food came out at a great pace. Everyone talked about the cool bathroom (heated toilet seats) but for me the food and drinks will bring me back.
Great as usual. Never a disappointment . We have been there several times. The bar scene and food is excellent. The servers are very attentive & give the customers undivided attention.
The food was amazing. Took a long time to get drinks or the waiters attention. They accommodated a candle in dessert for my wife but didn't clear the table before serving the dessert. Overall good experience. I would definitely recommend this place.
We last ate here right after they opened a few years ago, and weren't wowed enough to go back. Decided to give it another try, since they were still in business, so we figured that maybe they had improved. We had an absolutely horrible experience. Wait-staff is nice, but very poorly trained (i.e., not sophisticated, given the type of restaurant -- would be better suited to an IHOP-type quick-service restaurant). We ordered a few appetizers to share between the two of us. About halfway through we decided we wanted to order an entrée as well, and another cocktail. 35 solid minutes later (with our dirty dishes from the appetizers still in front of us), cocktail still hadn't come, and entrée still hadn't come. (We checked our watches -- not exaggerating here about a 35-minute wait.) And one of our appetizers from the initial order never came at all either. We asked the waiter, and his response was, "Yeah, things are coming out slow. I'd be upset, too." [The initial cocktail order was "slow," but not 35 minutes. When they were served, the waiter said "sorry these took like 5 years to come out."]
At that point, we canceled the order and asked for the check. Check came, and included the appetizer that we never got. Had that removed, paid, and left. No apologies, no "let me get the manager for you," no nothing. We won't be back.
[FWIW, the dining room also has a very weird vibe -- very different décor than bar area. Both areas are pretty shabby. Bar floor was sticky near the entrance when we arrived -- more appropriate for a college bar, not a nice bar/restaurant. Ceiling in dining room was visibly patched with mis-sized materials, with paint missing and nail heads showing.]
Food tasted great but it took a long time and was cool when it arrived.
The food was good but expensive and the service was awful.
Drink list was quite extensive however the wine list was somewhat disappointing. Service was good.
The waiters seem overwhelmed. There is no sense of urgency towards excellent customer service. The food is ok. I would not go back. Please do not take a date here - you will be disappointed.
Consistantly delicious! Service and staff are friendly and attentitive. Always look forward to going there -
Food was good but the drinks were so overpriced. $12-$14 per glass of wine and we had to ask them to give us a normal pour. They tried to get away with half a pour. Three people and we only ordered 3 entrees and drinks and spent $103/ pp.
The food to say the least was AMAZING. Loved the decor as well. Overall had a wonderful experience.
Just as excellent as always. Never had a bad experience here. Will definitely return.
Food was amazing. Service was terrible. Server never gave us the dinner or dessert specials. Got lost during our dinner. Had to chase him down for check plus never checked our reservation through open table.
This was my umpteenth return to Upstairs. They just about never disappoint. I have to say that on this occasion, though the place was practically empty when we got there (early reservation; it totally packed up later), for some reason, they couldn't get my hamburger order right. (Black-and-blue--what's not to understand--came to the table medium rare--and the waiter even acknowledged that he thought I asked for medium-rare. That would not have been problem--mistakes can happen--but it took about 10-15 minutes to catch his attention to get the mistake corrected. As I said, there was only one other couple in the dining area, so it's not like he was overwhelmed. Even the french-fries were a shade off from crispy. No excuse for that. So the food was definitely NOT up to the standards set by previous visits. I still like the place, and no one rushed us to leave when we were finished eating, so I'd go back one more time--mainly for the ambience and the bar (I am so not impressed by the no-choice options of BYOB places). If it happens again, though, I'll find somewhere else to get a good blue hamburger.
Pleasantly surprised. Food was unique and delicious. Service was great. We sat by the kitchen - a bit noisy but not so bad, was entertaining to watch. Host/owner was great, stopped by twice to make sure everything ok and was entertaining himself.
The 2 star rating is mostly on value for money. After 3 visits I decided not to come back.
The food is good but not worth the charge. There are plenty of places around with better food and several are even less expensive.
1) reservation. Tried a 7:00 but was offered 6:30 as closest. SEVERAL tables were still empty when we left around 8:00. The same happened last time we went.
Service was very nice but for sure just learning. No knowledge and still learning how to handle the plates.
Prices are crazy. $15 for a Margarita and $14 for a glass of house Chardonnay which retails for less than $9 a bottle. $38 for the sea bass...
I like the bar setting but please be reasonable.....
In all respects that matter, Upstairs is a dining experience that everyone would enjoy. I've been there before, and I'll be back.
Great and fun atmosphere in the bar. Open kitchen. Very lively but on the other side quitter and a bit more romantic. The food is creative and delicious!!!
The food was amazing as was the service. However, they did not honor my reservation with Open Table and did not reward the points I was supposed to receive.
The only thing I didn't like was there was a bug in my boyfriends drink, but they took care of it. We received the drink free and everything else was lovely.!
Get the Brussels sprouts they are amazing
Mac n cheese was good as well
No late night full service although the took the reservation (small plates only).
A first time visit for Father's Day celebration. Fairly high priced but food was well-prepared and enjoyed most dishes we had. Server did not ask how salmon was to be prepared so unfortunately too rare for our taste. Beet salad was very good with generous goat cheese and both red and yellow beets. A nice touch that the burger, which was juicy and flavorful, came with salad as a side in lieu of fries. Fried chicken also nicely prepared. Dad's favorite dessert - key lime pie was a hit. Overall a good experience. Would come back for a date night or perhaps cocktails and small plates (appetizers) with girlfriends.
Appetizers, gnocchi with mushrooms, and endive salad, were great. Fried chicken dinner was superb (taste and texture) and Catch (of the day) was Wild-caught Chilean Sea Bass, served with grapes, sauteed kale, a wonderful sauce. The food was perfect.
We got one of every small plate for our group of six and couldn't have been more pleased
First - the food was very good. We started with the Shrimp app and the 3 cheese plate. For entrees, I had the pork chop and my girlfriend had the scallops and the vanilla creme brûlée for dessert (fantastic). Everything was flavorful, well seasoned and cooked well. No complaints there. The service, though friendly, was off. The staff seemed very young and inexperienced. When the waitress ran down the specials I had to ask which item was an app or an entree. She had actually listed them entree first, so it was confusing. When picking the cheeses there was one we'd never heard of and we asked her to describe it and she couldn't. They also brought our entrees out while still finishing our apps. Now, I know this is nit-picky, but for $200+ for 2 people, I would expect a little bit better service. Also, the cocjtauls at the bar were $17/ each. We weren't blown away by the drinks or the bar itself. It looked like something from the early 2000s.
