Union Portland Ratings and Reviews
My wife and I came here with my 2 kids to celebrate my 40th Birthday. Upon entering, I was really optimistic that we found a gem. But boy was I wrong.
Let me start out with the good:
- The atmosphere was great
- Most of the appetizers were superb. We had the chicken liver, Brussel sprouts and beets. All 3 were fantastic.
- We were seated right away. It appeared to be a slow night for a Saturday. I would say 30% of the tables were empty.
The not so good:
- Our waitress was extremely inattentive and rude! She ignored us most of the night and we needed to proactively get her attention anytime we needed something. She never once asked us "can I get anything for you". What really bugged me is we asked for ketchup and mayonnaise for my daughter's hamburger and she literally took 10 minutes to bring it to us. By the time we received it (after having to ask her a second time), my daughter's dinner was cold. Every time we interacted with her, we sensed attitude and it was like we were inconveniencing her each time we asked for something.
- The Venison appetizer was DRY, DRY, DRY. I literally needed to chug water to swallow it.
- The salmon / broth dish I was was beyond salty. And I like salt, but man, this broth was like I was drinking from a salt flat.
- The icing on the cake was being charged $4.00 for a Soda Water, plus another $4.00 for a refill! I've never in my life been charged for a Soda Water, let alone a refill. $16.00 for my wife and I to have 2 soda waters each from the soda fountain? Come on!
I generally don't leave negative reviews like this, but I can honestly say I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone based on our experience and the price we payed.
Most pleasant atmosphere and our server, Javier, was excellent. Quick to fill our needs before our requests. The food was beautifully presented and prepared. We and another couple were celebrating our anniversaries that total over eighty years. We were presented with complimentary, delicious desserts. Definitely a keeper.
Our experience at Union was good; however, since I have no way of rating our service at Inkwell I have assigned an overall rating of “1.” The bar server “misplaced” our friends credit card. I settled the tab and paid for at least one extra drink that we didn’t have. I’m not sure if you’ve ever had a lost or stolen credit card but it is a complete inconvenience. Through no fault of his own, our friend has now been totally inconvenienced and the consolation was the equivalent of one entree? Really? How embarrassing to put my friend’s wife on the spot to pay for her own meal.
We were so pleased with our visit to Union...right up there with our favorites Davids 388 and Primo! We appreciated that they called to confirm our reservation and then were happy to move it up earlier in the evening. We had two at the table with nut allergies and they could not have been more accommodating. Such a great experience...from the hostess to the wait staff to the several servers who helped to make our dinner exceptional! And the food...oh my, so good! Every bite was outstanding! We will be back again and again...top notch restaurant in not only Portland, but our great collection on restaurants in Maine! Thank you for making our evening so memorable!
My adult son and I love Union. This was our fourth time, the last three Thanksgivings and one Mother's Day last year I think. Not only is the food spectacular, the prices are reasonable for a high end place, and the service is great. And, even though it was apparently sold out all day and evening on Thanksgiving, we were not rushed and were able to linger at our table. I was amazed when we had gone on Mother's day that when we were leaving all of the Mom's were given a lovely cupcake in a pretty little box. Well, they outdid themselves on this Thanksgiving - when we left we were given two wrapped turkey sandwiches, just so we'd have leftovers! This place continues to amaze. And, BTW, the hotel lobby bar is also great.
Ate three great breakfasts there as well as the TG dinner. The TG menu was very nice ($55, choice of salad, entree, dessert) The turkey dinner was traditional and "fine". Turkey itself was very good, potatoes, cranberry and dressing fine, squash hard as a rock. Dessert was lovely. Coffee a tasty blend.
From the moment we walked in greeted with a warm and enthusiastic smile, to having top notch attentive service with great recommendations, to just exquisite and unique food. An absolutely total great dining experience. Not only will we be back, but I will recommend this very special restaurant at every opportunity that comes my way.
My wife and I dined here last night. It was a fantastic experience. I ordered the artisan cheese plate, which was spectacular. Locally sourced, great variation of cheeses with the house made bread & fig jam had amazing flavors. My wife had the lobster chowder. Very delicious broth, big chunks of lobster. Was very delicious.
Our main courses were equally delicious. My wife had the Casco Bay scallops. They were very tender with a great lemony mildness that allowed the beauty of the perfectly cooked scallop to stand out. I ordered the braised lobster. My naïveté was that braised meant that it was in a broth. Upon trying it, I was stunned by its depth of flavors. The vegetables, the broth, the lobster tail, the cream chowder all have my dish amazing depth and flavor.
This was a delicious meal and I would highly recommend this restaurant!
Great spot for a business lunch. Atmosphere was great as was the service. The meal left something to be desired. Ordered the lunch special: shrimp po boy, vegetarian chili, and arugula salad. Beans in the chili were well undercooked and the dish overall lacked flavor (review from my coworker was the same). Salad was nice and the sandwich was a pleasant surprise.
The food here was great. Very creative and delicious but the cocktails lacked luster. They had great drinks to offer but the one my husband ordered did not taste good. Though they have an assortment of wines, it is listed by type (Pinot noir) and not by wine maker and year.
We arrived a few minutes prior to our reservations and were happy to wait in the comfy bar area where we sat in one of the lounge set ups and shared a bottle of wine while we took pics and watched the people walking by outside. After we finished our wine, I questioned the delay as our table was still not ready - we ordered another bottle of wine and eventually they led us to our table and said the appetizers would be on them (a very nice gesture and much appreciated). We ordered lots of different selections from the menu and everything was delicious. The only thing we didn't love was the brown bread in the can with the "pig butter" - we actually much preferred the house bread that had a nice salty crust. The cheese plate was nice, the scallops, the cauliflower...all great. I wasn't sure what to expect since often times restaurants in hotels aren't the best - but we all agreed it was a great meal and it's a worth a trip to the restroom to see all of the cool "press-related" décor in the hotel lobby.
Lovely and sophisticated space and service. Excellent food with many locally sourced ingredients. Brussel Sprouts a must! Scallops were perfectly prepared as was the Chefs Special of Cod and mussels. Need to ask for bread if you’re a sauce “dipper” like us.
Union is our new 'go to' dining place whenever we are in Portland. Have been there a dozen times for both lunch and dinner and it never disappoints. Creative ever changing menu items, great wines and excellent service. A must have is the Chef's specially created Brussel sprouts with walnuts! From the friendly greeter to our excellent wait person Monica, it is truly a pleasure to dine here from start to finish. The staff works as a team so you are never left waiting for anything!
The hight table near the wine storage was perfect for a party of 8, we felt like we were in a private wine room while still having a full view of the kitchen and dining room. Very good service overall and the food was excellent as usual, only disappointment was that 4 of us had ordered the rabbit and weren't told they had run out until after the appetizers were served. That sounded like poor communication from the kitchen and it's always less than ideal to have to make a substitution under the gun....
The food and décor of Union was enjoyable. However, the service was rather lacking. The pace of the food was awkward. It took a while for our dishes to come out despite it not being a full house and the break between our dishes was really long. Our waiter's presence was lacking in a negative way. The entire evening my water glass was filled once, I think possibly after another staff overheard me saying that my glass had not been filled once in the evening though it was empty. It wasn't the worst meal ever by any means, but I don't know if I'd bother dining here again.
The food sever never checked on how our food was and she seemed as friendly as an IRS Agent I tipped her over 20% because I know she has tip out other people at the restaurant
The food was amazing and the menu had enough choices to where you felt you were in charge of what you were ordering but not too many where you felt you had to throw a dart Well done
We were celebrating a birthday, belatedly, prior to an event at Merrill Auditorium. The staff was efficient without hovering, and very accommodating concerning requests. At one point, we feared we might not make our reservation time due to traffic concerns, and the Union affirmed we needn't worry; they'd hold our table. The food was both creative and delicious: I had the Confit Eggplant and Summer Zucchini Cakes, both small plates. Truly memorable, and together, a complete and satisfying meal. We shared a Local Corn Madelaine for dessert. It's ample, and sinfully delectable. Price is in line with Portland prices, which I think a little high, especially when much of the food is locally sourced, but that's a general complaint in Portland. I'd definitely dine here again!
