We were there for lunch. Excellent food. Cordial service -- not too friendly, not too distant. Noise level was too high. We had trouble hearing each other and we sat right across from each other at a small two person table. Old ears, perhaps. Lovely, lovely room -- best of any restaurant I have been in. So, experience was very good, excellent, over all.

Well, maybe it should have been. The two person lunch -- 2 small salads, 2 omelettes, 2 glasses wine, 2 creme brulee, 2 coffees -- was (wait for it) $115 plus tip of $22, for a grand total of $137.
If you had a lunch like that every day of the year, it would come to $50,005. And then there's dinner.....

But it's good. Oh, and lots and lots of Yale professors are there. They can afford it apparently.

This remains my favorite restaurant in New Haven... which is saying something, given how many fantastic restaurants there are in that city.

Food and wine were excellent. We ate in the bar area, which was quiet and we felt like VIP. Waiter was very professional and great at answering and researching our questions.

Service was impeccable as always. Our waiter was attentive and quick to give wine pairing suggestions that were helpful. My only complaint was that my lobster entree had some bone in the claw meat. I know it not really home it’s more of an exoskeleton or some such thing but having to pick it out of my mouth whilst eating left me feeling less than happy. I was going to tell the waiter but my plate was removed while I was chatting with my friend and I forgot to bring it up afterwards. This is the second time my meal has had a bone in it. The first instance was a few years back when there was a piece of duck bone in my terrine. Again, less than pleasant. I was going to bring my parents here on the 23rd of December but I’m not sure any longer.

I took my 2 children there for my birthday and we had a fabulous time. The waiter and the manager were very kind to the boys (6 and 7) and made them feel very grown up. The service was excellent, the manager (or owner not sure) came to thank us for coming and gave my sons paper and crayons to keep them entertained. The bartender was very kind and made a juice combination that they liked and the food was excellent. They were very accommodating and split the main entrée (the lobster) onto 2 beautifully presented plates for the boys with extra bisque on the side. We all left very happy.

Very disappointing sadly.
When we lived in CT we visited Union League several times and on one occasion in particular had a meal I still remember vividly for being superb and subtle, beautifully cooked French food simple but sophisticated.
This visit was much looked forward and entirely disappointing. A lobster sandwich had so little lobster in it I was still hungry despite eating plenty of bread too. My husband's nicoise included two pieces of unpleasant, less than fresh, and overcooked tuna. Our guest's steak was tough and tasteless. Coffee at over $4 a pot and no refills is crazy.
Waiters are oldfashionedly formal and rather nice although sometimes hard to track down.
We were so sad not to have had the special meal we were looking forward to even over a casual lunch.

Delicious, decadent, truly French cuisine. I was tempted to lick the plate!😉.
Portions are small, no need for a doggie bag, service is impeccable. Cocktails are OK, not really impressed in that department. I wish prices were more reasonable. Between the small portions, high prices and total lack of parking, I don’t think I’ll become a regular! Ha, ha...

This was our first time here. It was very nice ambiance and service. The food left something to desire but the drinks are very good. We had wood pidgeon foie gras and canard fig appetizers. Both were good. For dinner we had the cod and octopus and canard with mission figs and radish. The cod had a strange texture and a very fishy smell. Like it was old. The canard was chewy rather than melt in your mouth. We did not have dessert.

As usual, we enjoyed our meal at the ULC tremendously. Our server, Amy, was knowledgeable and very professional. There were a couple of tiny niggles -- one was that two tiny toast points were served with the woodcock/foie gras mousse when we could have easily used 6 each. There was a delay in getting us some additional toast points. The second was that my husband's lamb was a bit cold, which he said he had noticed when he had ordered lamb there before. Other than that, ULC is by far and away the absolute best restaurant in New Haven, but it is one of our favorites anywhere...including NYC.

Great French bistro and brasserie food in a charming dining room. Truly authentic compared to a number of other French restaurants we know in New England.

The wine pairings suggested with the restaurant week menu were outstanding, and the advice of the sommelier and staff are worth seeking out.

A friend and I went as part of restaurant week. This restaurant has been on my bucket list for years and Restaurant week was the perfect opportunity, even with the extra $10 cost to enjoy the 3 course meal option, it was worth every cent. Every aspect was on point, the ambiance, the service, the fresh baked French bread x 3 servings, soup appetizer of New England Cod Chowder , the main course of Roast Monk Fish, and the sorbet with house made ice cream was all decadent. The coffee was served in a mini French press to top off a perfect dining experience.

Blown away is an understatement. I’ve been trying to eat at Union for awhile and I’m finally glad I did! It’s been a week and I’m still thinking about the Braised Short Rib and Potato’s Gratin. The staff was polite and diligent with filling my water which is always a plus in my book. I look forward to the next time I get to dine at this great restaurant.

My husband and I regularly dine out all over the entire state of Connecticut. We have been wanting to try Union League Cafe for some time and thought New Haven Restaurant Week to be the perfect opportunity. I am sorry to say we won't be returning. The overall reason is that the food quality, including flavors, matched with the price are just not worth it. They do make me mixed drink, though.

We went for restaurant week. Had venison tartine, short rib, and the chocolate plaisir.
The cocktails, however were a bit underwhelming. I would stick to strong scotch-based drinks and try their wine.

Everything was wonderful, I just wouldn't get desserts here. Also they have a wonderful wine selection... But they give a cheap restaurant arriving where I prefer a nice healthy Italian restaurant pout. Other than that it's pricey and smaller plates A le carte, but also worth every penny because of food quality and taste! I'd go back again and just go else where for dessert.

As usual the Union League Cafe exceeded our expectations. Even though it was restaurant week in New Haven and the restaurant was packed, we had a civilized glass of wine in the bar first and then were seated on time. Service was most attentive and not the slightest bit pretentious. Our meal was delicious and exquisitely prepared and presented. We look forward to returning soon.

Former Union League Club with strikingly excellent ambiance, excellent service, varied menu. However, we were not happy with our mussels. The sauce was bland and almost tasteless, We should have tried the grilled squid. Convenient location, but not if you plan to leave by taxi.

Lunch at Union League Cafe is always a treat. The occasion was a Reatuarant Week lunch with my 87 y.o. mom . She luxuriated in her Croque Monsieur on a lovely, dense, chewy boule. The cheese layered on top turned in a crispy treat that oozed (sorry!) contentment. My Macaroni Charlotte was a gift on a plate when it arrived. Penne pasta sprinkled with bits of savory mushroom and chard was presented upright like a regiment of immaculate soldiers. The parmesan was just a bit wan, but the presentation and overall effect more than made up for it. Dessert continued on the white theme with a Vacherin offering unctuous chestnut ice cream and pear sorbet along with a beautifully-wound meringue confection to give some toothy crunch to the meal. Our waitress was perfect on timing and professional in all things.

Bravo encore!

My party arrived early and we were seated right away with a good seat and were addressed by our server in a timely manner. I asked for a cocktail which was terrible and the other member of my party felt the same with their drink. We asked the server about the drinks and the returned and did provide us with some details as to why the drinks tasted the way the did but I wasn’t pleased with the way the bartender makes his drinks so I didn’t even bother asking for another. The appetizers were good but I wasn’t not happy with the way the entree was prepared, I was quite disappointed. I had a braised short rib which was tough and had a lot of what felt like gristle and it was particularly bland for my taste. To finish things off we asked for our desert to go and the server put our desert on the floor in a bag, we asked if this was normal as was told it was. I feel that patrons she be asked if they are ok with their food being put on the floor. Overall I was not pleased with the place and would not dine here again. It appears to be a place for socialites to sit and have expensive wine not good food.
