We were among the first to go to the Union Kitchen And Tap in the Gaslamp. We went to the onion Encinitas and heard they were opening and were impressed with the food. Over the years we have had good and good service. It seems when Manuel on of the GM's left things started declining. We made reservations for 7:15 PM but checked in about 45 minutes early. They went ahead and sat us and my wife and I looked at the menu to see what we would order. After 5 minutes my wife needed to go the restroom and after she had returned we waited another8 min or so and not once did anyone approach our table. We had 3 waitress go by, look and walk away. We had a table beside us where the waitress made numerous stops looked right at me and walked away. 15 minutes and not even a buster or runner came by to even offer us water. At this point we picked up our menus, handed them to the hostess as she was seating another table and stopped at the reservation table and I told the manager what had happened. He offered to make it right but I said no because what he didn't know is threaten we had not been back for so long is that this same thing happened the last time we were there. We let them make it right that time but if thats what kind of service they have now we don't want to go there. NO ONE should have to wait that long and have not a single person on staff even say hello or be right with you. We walked up the street and went to a place we visited for our anniversary weekend. Doubt we will return because they really have problems.

Restaurant did not have my reservation when we arrived. We were offered one end of a high top table for six in the bar area. Food took forever to arrive and looked like it had been sitting under a heat lamp for a while.

Thoroughly enjoyed our time at Union Kitchen & Tap - Gaslamp. Food was great!! We had a real variety of items as there were six of us, and everyone LOVED their choices. I particularly liked my flatbread selection but everyone seemed really happy. Absolutely zero complaints on the food!

Our only concern was the slow service. The establishment was not busy, but it took a very long time to receive not only our food, but our drinks. We had a play to attend and were a bit rushed at the end. The wait staff was extremely nice and friendly - but slow - even after we told them we had to be moving. We most likely will be back though as everything else was wonderful - and we just will have to stay on them to let them know we were serious. We arrived at 11:30 a.m. with a reservation and didn't leave until after 1:30 p.m. so it wasn't like we attempting to rush them.

Nice ambiance, casual, fun. Our food was well prepared and. delicious Had the peach barbecue wings and poke appetizers. Both were quite tasty. Tried the cheeseburger and the shrimp and grits entree. Also delicious although a bit pricey for the shrimp and grits which only had 3 shrimp, but a lot of hot sausage. For dessert we shared the olive oil cake which was also very nice. We sat outdoor which was quite comfortable. Looking forward to coming back and trying some other breakfast menu items.

Our food, drinks and service were fantastic, and it was a lovely place to spend an evening in the Gaslamp District in San Diego. The Wild Boar Ragu especially was amazing.

Ordered Big Eye Poke and Calamari appetizers. ordered Short Rib Stroganoff and Shrimp and Grits for our meals. Within 5 minutes of receiving our appetizers, the entrees arrived. Way too quick. Tried to order a drink when the entrees arrived but lady wasn’t our server and said she couldn’t take order. Server was never around. About our food????
Ok the Big Eye Tune Poke was very good. The rest was subpar. Calamari app was overcooked and the tentacles section were so dry inside from overcooking the crumbled apart. The rings were overcooked and chewy. The tentacles were so overcooked they weren’t even chewy. The Short Rib Stroganoff was so bland. The short rib was sliced and coated on outside w herbs but was tasteless and tough. Have to cook short ribs low and slow. They cooked it like a steak. The noodles were luke warm and stuck together and the sauce was very light with zero seasoning. Not good. Shrimp and Grits was so watery I was amazed it was sent out. Ive been wanting to try this place for a long time. I have scratched it off my list. There are too many great places downtown to eat at like Double Standard, Lionfish, Lions Share, Cowboy Star, Rustic Root, Searsucker Cafe Chloe. I wont be back, and I now understand why it was not crowded on a Sat night. Take me advice, steer clear and choose another place.

Substandard service for this great location. So if your customers are willing to pay the high end prices you charge (especially for your specialty drinks) , at least provide your staff with training on what beer glass goes with what. One member our party received no chilled glass whatsoever with his bottled beer and when he asked for one he was given the stink eye and brought a draft beer glass right out of the dishwasher, hot. No appropriate chilled glass served with a bottled beer, no additional dish ever provided for a dish we were splitting after asking multiple times (it never came so we used an empty dish from our appetizers that they never cleared away instead). Not nitpicking, but I could think of a dozen other places to go where I'd be happy to pay higher prices to enjoy the location with the service it deserves. Definitely not returning. We made prior reservations for 5, which they couldn't find even though I showed them my email confirmation. We 5 agreed to sit at at a tiny table at first and have drinks/appetizers until a bigger table became available. When we swapped tables, they didn't even have the decency to allow our server to continue serving us at the next table. They suggested we first pay our bill, and start a new bill with new server. They should have figured that out themselves and not put the burden on us or our first server. Whatever, lesson learned and not going there again for these reasons.

I kindly ask for a quiet table. The manager simply does not understand what a business meal is. When the customer requests for business meal and you know you have special occasion, the restaurant should have informed the customer beforehand or be flexible and get a new table at more quiet location. Opentable should get rid of occasion option of business meal in this restaurant.

The worst experience.

Visited with business team in San Diego. Food was great and the seating was comfortable. Was extremely loud, however; the guitar player wasn't necessary and only added to the noise. We should have waited for an outside table!

This visit was a lot more disappointing than my last here. The patio is pleasant, but the tables outside are incredibly sticky. They do *not use placemats*. So they expect you to keep your silverware on this gross table between courses. Service was efficient, and food came out quickly. But the server was very harried waiting on several tables and had no warmth - never asked us how we were enjoying things or if everything was ok. Local greens salad was good overall, though the fried egg was a lot more leaden than last time I went. But the big eye tuna entrée was very disappointing. The sides on the plate were very tasty - corn and purple cauliflower. But the tuna itself had probably been seared and then stuck under a heat lamp for a long time. It was gelatinous and dry even though it looked rare. Very strange. And the server was so harried he didn't really get my drink order right and then never came to check on whether I was enjoying it. The prices here are better than in a lot of places in the Gaslamp, and the food is good when it's good. But with icky tables, service that doesn't make you feel welcome, and then some bad dishes coming out, I don't think I'll return.

Excellent food and value, plenty of seating so I can take a group of business colleagues there when there is an event in town. I am only in San Diego when on business, so appreciate that Union Gaslamp accepts lunch reservations. Friendly vibrant staff and an energetic atmosphere round out a perfect spot for lunch!

Had a great, relaxed meal with a small group. Excellent mixed drink and beer selection, good was expertly prepared from a diverse menu with a Southern twist. Everything from burgers, chops, steaks, to pasta and fish. Tutu the meatball appetizer and pork tomahawk. We also favored the dump and grits. Prompt and friendly service. Comfortable seating. Plenty of tv's with sports tuned in. Relaxed, informal atmosphere.

I was attending a conference in San Diego and went with 2 groups of business colleagues, who are also friends. I marked it as "business", but it was also a friend get-together. I actually made the reservation because a local San Diego person recommended it to me (another friend). I ended up making 2 reservations for 2 separate meetings. It was delicious food--especially the s'mores dessert (and I don't order dessert much, but this was worth it!), the salmon was really good and the mixed vegetables and brussel sprouts with goat cheese were awesome. There was a special I had with local fish that was a wee bit too spicy, but other than that the regular menu had various great options I enjoyed!!! Good service on both occasions.

Group of five for Mother's Day brunch/buffet. We have a couple of picky eaters but when the restaurant called to confirm the reservation I checked on their menu for that day. French toast, waffles---with pecan, Nutella, pwd sugar and other toppings, salmon platter, fresh bagels maple bacon, beans, rice...shrimp and grits, acai bowl with fruit and chocolate... and I cannot remember anything else were amazing. My best friend and her daughter both contacted me afterwards to let me know how great they though the food was. Everything was fresh, tasty. Service was above average---we'd put our order in for drinks which took some time but the server was friendly and didn't forget anything even though it took some time to arrive. TVs were on different channels with sports, looks like the alcoholic drinks were well liked. Coffee was decent. Parking garage is close, street parking available. Not too bad an environment for older kids, not sure I would recommend little ones here as the booths were high and tables were close...but they'd be fine in general. Brunch was about $35/per person for Mother's Day. Overall, amazing food, decent service for being busy... a wee noisy for a romantic date (think popular bar noise) Highly recommend.
