Union Bar & Grill

Our reservation was “lost”. The host basically told us we should find a different place to eat. A bartender saw this and offered us seats at the bar. I purchased the avocado shrimp toast which must have been bad because I was sick later. I had a steak sandwich and onion rings as well. Those were very good. The bartender was good as well
Our server was top notch. I did a fair amount of resesrch to choose Union and decided to ignore others feedback about missed reservations. Well, guess what...? Although we were seated without resistance, they had no record of our reservation dispite getting both a confirmation via email AND and live person from Union itself. My best advice is to have a backup plan just in case...
The food was so delicious! We especially loved the truffle fries and the vodka martinis were delightful! Our server was amazing and everyone so kind.
It was very loud on the rooftop. We did do a reservation for the trio drop and the hostess downstairs said we could go up an check ourselves but seated us at a table in the restaurant. Went upstairs and they had a couple tables open and was able to seat us. For it being an open space on a rooftop patio it was very loud and hard to communicate with each other and the waitress. I would go again as the food was good and if you can get a high top on the patio it would have a better view and hopefully not be as loud.
Excellent food, had a party of 5 who all had various items from the menu, all loved it. Disappointed that my reservation wasn’t processed correctly, as you have no control over your reservation being on the ground floor or the rooftop. Excellent and prompt service. A little pricy for my taste, $140 for 5 entrees, but I look forward to returning.
The Staff knew what they were talking about. We wanted to sit on the paio, but it was being used for a private event. But sitting inside was OK and the flavors in the drinks and the food more than made up for out lack of outdoor time.
It was okay. We had a reservation but it took forever for someone to come to the hostess stand. Table was right next to a waitress station. Took forever for the waitress to come. Took forever for drinks. Food was fine, but nothing special. I wouldn’t go again.
Scrambled eggs and hashbrowns with a couple of drinks for brunch should not cost $50 per person (including tax and tip).
The food at the Union Bar and Grill was excellent, the service was great. My disappointment was that I thought I had made reservations for the rooftop and I hadn't. Double check when you make your reservation that you are where you want to be. The rooftop was filled, so we sat downstairs. It was ok, but very loud and without the view of the rooftop.
Very good Happy Hour food and Service
Restaurant was very warm and you were sweating while eating. Server was nice and helpful but did not know the types of specials regarding drinks that were seasonal. Place was nice to visit but will not be stopping back again.
Not a place for 60+ crowd, way too loud. Some food good, meatloaf very marginal.
Loved the rooftop! We had a great time celebrating a birthday! Will definitely go again soon!
Vegan selection was amazing both in quantity and quality. A bit noisy for my taste, and understandably more expensive than I'm used to due to the location.
Very disturbing and frustrating when I came there with a reservation for the rooftop dining and the two young ladies at the hostess desk stated that my reservation was for main dining area. Not true as I showed them the confirmation on my phone. Probably won’t be getting my business again. We had a wonderful experience across street at Capital Grill
Great place to eat in the heart of Minneapolis. The food was awesome and service was outstanding. We sat out on the rooftop. It was absolutely perfect. Definitely will be going back.
The location was the best part of the experience-right next to many theaters for shows.
The food was overpriced and cooked poorly. I got the surf and turf and the shrimp were overcooked, dry and shriveled. The steak was not the doneness that I ordered, and everything lacked seasoning. The price was ridiculous with all of that in mind.
The restaurant was also very hot. I appreciated there was an elevator to the basement restrooms for ADA access, and the decorating was good. I would eat elsewhere, in the future however.
Made reservations at Union to enjoy rooftop dining even with rain in forecast. I requested rooftop seating in our reservation notes and was not notified rooftop was reserved for private event until we arrived. This is the second time this has happened to us at Union. Disappointing.
Hi KarenJ, I am sorry we were unable to seat you on the rooftop restaurant please note that we have two opentable reservation sites on opentable one for the rooftop and one for the Bar and Grill you reserved in the Bar and Grill had you reserved in the rooftop section it would have notified you of the event. I apologize for the confusion. I hope you give us another chance if there is anything else we can do to assist please call us anytime directly.
it was my birthday I requested for a cake with chocolate saying happy birthday and was not delivered ,y friends and I were also very rushed our bill was brought to us before we were even done eating and while we were taking pics our food that we hadn't even touched was taken from the table not to boxed up just taken .No I will not be returning nor would I recommend its a waste of time and money .
Our server was fantastic. The food was delicious. And we had a wonderful time. Great experience.
The view was nice and so was the service. However, the food was not great and the prices were too high for the quality of the food.
Our server was very rude with an attitude he snatched my cash and was ridiculously rude.
We are from rural MN, we come to downtown msp once a year. Last night I took my mom out for a late Mother’s Day celebration with dinner at this place then tickets to the state theatre. We get there, there is construction on the street, the hostess tells us they broke the water main but there is no water and no bathroom. She gave us the option of another place Crave that was a block further that would honor our reservation. I wasn’t sure of reviews or the cost of Crave and my mom can’t walk far and that was further. We stayed here. we ordered a mushroom Swiss burger to split, with mushrooms on the side, plus upgraded to truffle fries. As we waited in an empty restaurant with us being the only ones at the bar, we were violently interrupted many times as worker was dragging like thirty chairs one at a time across the cement floor to the elevator. It was so loud we couldn’t even talk. After a few chairs I told the bartender that it was too loud and they need to lift them. Bartender then went and told him and helped carry two chairs at a time with ease to the elevator. After that the guy kept dragging the chairs one at a time. This was inexcusable. After thirty minutes our food comes. My mom took a big bite of her burger only to respond in horror as she said “why is it so hot?!!!! What’s in here?!” I opened mine up and was shocked to see many sliced jalapeños all over the burger in some sauce. Not mushroom Swiss. My mom had burning lips and couldn’t stop the pain. We never eat spicy foods, ever, we just can’t and for that the be in our burger especially when you aren’t expecting it it is truly horrible. She started eating as many fries as she could and drinking her water. I get the bartender and show and tell him what is happening. He said he ordered the wrong burger and would remake it. Thirty minutes the burger we ordered arrived with no new fries. Mine were cold by now. He apologizes but we NEVER had an adjustment to our bill. DON’T GO!
Our party of 3 went on Mothers day. When we arrived we were greeted by the hostess promptly and escorted to our table. We sat for a solid 5 minutes before being served water from the buser. Another 3-5 minutes went by before our server came over stone faced and awkward. We proceeded to order our meals and beverages, things were looking up. In the mean time new customers had been sat around us. Some time had passed and we started to notice the customers who came in AFTER us were getting their food while we were still waiting for ours (same server for other tables). I had been a server for 10 years so my patience is pretty high and I try to be understanding. Once our food came I asked for another mimosa, never got it. My fiance was never asked if he wanted a refill on his beverage. We weren't asked if we wanted dessert. And the waitress not once cracked a smile, said happy mothers day, and barely made eye contact. Food was delicious, I would go back and try again. Just would prefer a different server.
We really love the food at this bar and have eaten there several times. I am giving this last visit the lowest rating possible based on how we were treated. I made a reservation on Sat May 11 for a Mother's Day lunch with my Mom, wife, and brother who flew in from Arizona for a surprise celebration. We set up a rooftop reservation for noon with Open Table. I also called in and asked if there was a full menu and they said yes. I also asked if we could order something Vegan for my wife from the bar menu and bring it up ... absolutely no problem, we were told. We showed up at noon on Saturday, and they said sorry the rooftop is closed for a private party. We have a reservation, we said. Sorry, some others have been turned away as well, nothing we can do. You can eat downstairs if you'd like. I guess, we said. however, there was only a brunch menu available, and we could not order vegan for my wife or have access to the full menu as they promised. No offer to make up for the situation at all! We had to leave and couldn't find a suitable place in DT Mpls that didn't have a wait, so just had to leave. Extremely poor customer service and experience. What's up Union?
Fantastic vegetarian/vegan menu! Much more variety than comparable restaurants. My favorite place to get a plant-based burger.
Should come with a warning: DJ too loud for conversations and 20-somethings yell over the DJ. I would have loved it 30 years ago. Luckily I had a 19-year-old niece with me to interrupt the music. (I know, sounding like my parents. Kids these days and their music.) Saw several families turnaround to leave before reaching the host stand. Maybe that's why I didn't see reviews stating it was very loud, DJ with today's music and not at all appropriate for kids. People who are blown away by the noise a they get off the elevator simply turn around.
Definitely not a relaxing Sunday brunch for any of my friends.
On the positive side, our server was fabulous, food was good and the bottomless mimosa almost makes the noise worth it.
Meatloaf tasted like fish so that's bad , but everything else was really tasty. Service was excellent.
Good food but not spectacular and very high prices for this level.
We really enjoyed our dinner here on Saturday night. My only issue was that the surf & turf was EXTREMELY salty. Other than that, the meal was fantastic. We started with the shrimp and avocado toast appetizer. I would definitely come here again.
great casual vibe. drink selection and bar bites were great
Absolutely love love love this place
Everything was great except there was a group of approximately 8 people waiting for a table with their drinks and they were extremely loud. I don't fault the staff for that though. People should be able to police their own noise level. Food and service were great. We will be back.
It was a great experience. Not the ambiance I expected. That is the only reason for my 4s. Definitely will go again
Food was good, except my husbands fish was a little well done.
Had reservations. Plenty of open tables. Sat us up at a tiny high top table.
Didn't tell waitress she had a table either.
A perfect family meal on a Sunday evening before a show at the Orpheum.
Great service, fantastic food and a fun atmosphere.
New waitress. She was friendly but did not make any recommendation, never checked on our table, and messed up the checks. We did not get any additional Sri is because she never came back. Food was ok at best. It was loud in the restaurant. Would not go back
We ordered a few appetizers to share, and while each were promising, the meat in the poutine was tough (yet supposedly was tenderloin?), as was the chicken in the chicken/waffle sliders. It didn't help that the homemade hot sauce was on the sliders, so one of us couldn't eat it; would be better if this were served on the side.
