We were meeting our son, who was in town from college, for dinner with his grandparents.
We arrived and were seated quickly. Took a little bit to have a server acknowledge us but was given water quickly. Service was good after that. Most of our food was good except for the burger my hubby ordered. For stating on the menu that “some meats are intentionally under-cooked for optimal flavor” his burger which he ordered medium came gray, over cooked and smaller than the bun it was served on. His fear of retribution will not allow him to send anything back so he ate it as it was but will not go back. I mean if u can’t cook a burger... does not say much.
My other issue is that it was noisy. Not a good place for people with hearing difficulties.
Servers were polite and cheerful--but couldn't find a list of wines by the bottle, then couldn't find the wine we ordered, later tried to take away my plate before we were done eating, then left desert on our table--ice cream--without spoons or other flatware. Restaurant reported to Open Table that we had not shown up, which of course we had, right on time, notifying hostess that we had a reservation. Food was delivered hot and was good, though not special--no better than, say, Applebees. Certainly not a special-occasion place.
A couple of friends and I made a reservation for dinner before a dance. The workers upstairs were extremely rude and we were not aware we needed a separate reservation to dine upstairs. We asked if we could wait or if there was room for 3 at the bar at all and they did not accommodate what so ever. We ended up sitting downstairs, even though the whole point was to dine upstairs for the rooftop experience. Later, they didn't allow us to take photos upstairs because the door was "broken", even though there were other ways to go outside. Overall, I would not recommend this restaurant simply because the service is awful.
Experience was a bit dampened due to the overly loud group next to us. Suspect they had been doing some day drinking!
We were pleasantly surprised. Staff was friendly, food was tasty and bar treats were interesting!
We have had reservations for 2 months at Union for Friday February 2 for 6 of us. We received a confirmation email the day before. When we arrived, we were told they were closed for a private party. No prior phone call for cancellation.
We came down for a girls get together. Our waitress was great! She was super helpful and accommodating. Plan to come back this weekend for Super Bowl weekend.
Very professional and genuinely friendly waiter named Charles. Wonderful tasting entrees . Appetizers were perfection. Ambience was nice Nice big booth with curved benches are fun. We'll be back !
Received excellent recommendations from our waitress. Food was served promptly, made to order and was hot.
Very good food, very accommodating service for our rushed situation, happy people, music a little loud and ‘techno’ for our taste but it did not override the other positives we experienced.
It was disappointing to learn the reservation I made for the roof top was on street level due to a private party. The street level was fine but I was really looking forward to the open tropical gel of the roof top. The private party goers were coming in as we were checking in and they were extremely rude to us. One blonde ‘older’ women was talking to us as if we were lower class because we were standing by their champagne greeting table. There was no one there to explain we shouldn’t stand there. I was not happy.
we had dinner before a Timberwolves game and we were shocked to be the only ones up in the dining room (maybe it was the cold weather?) Most restaurants had pre game availability, so we opted for this since it was close and we'd not been there. GREAT service (no other distractions for most of our time there!). Excellent appetizer - highly recommend the deconstructed clam chowder. My salmon Caesar salad wasn't so good. The Halibut my husband had was excellent. We will return when we're in Mpls again.
Made reservations for dinner before Phantom on 12/30 and was not disappointed. My son had a burger that he raved about and The Tuna Poke salad was amazing as well. We were seated a little early (our reservations were 6:15) and we were done eating before 7pm. I can't wait to go back in the summer so I can give the roof top a try.
Service was exceptional. Adam was great. Only issue we had was how cold it was in the Bar & Grille. However, it was below zero outside.
Fantastic food, service & great prices. We stayed in downtown Minneapolis to see Phantom of the Opera and walked just a little ways to Union Bar & Grill from our hotel. The next time I stay in downtown Minneapolis I will definitely come back.
First time here. Great service, personable but not intrusive. We ate at a high top in the bar area. I would say that our group of 6 was most impressed by the appetizers: the truffled fries with two sauces were the best I have ever had, the poutine was good, the carmelized brusellsprouts were memorable and the buffalo fried cauliflower was perfect for those who like some spice. Portions were generous and we were full by the time our meals came! That said, I heard raves from others on their meals. It is "bar food" but some of the best bar food around.
We were seeing Phantom of the Opera at the Orpheum Theatre and opted to have dinner at Union before the show. The meal, service and setting were top notch and we had a marvelous time!
We had not been here for awhile and we comforted, maybe almost surprised, at how good everything was. Four entrees, two appetizers - each outstanding. We’ll be back!
While this isn't my first time at Union Grill, I will say that it's probably been one of the best. If getting there early, make sure to request a booth. This helps insulate you from some of the noise in the restaurant at large. The food is good, if a bit expensive for what you get. The quality of the truffle fries can't be beat, though, so they're a must for anyone with a discerning palette.
Food was good, liked the happy hour specials. Ordered 2 kinds of onion rings and both were very salty. All other food was great!
The food was good and the ambiance was casual. Our service was not the best but that would not prevent me from going back. Overall it was a good experience.
We really enjoyed the atmosphere and food. The service was outstanding and everyone was really friendly. I would let people know this was a fantastic place to go.
We waited at our table quite a while to see if we had a server, and wound up getting our own drinks up at the bar. When she showed up, our server was pleasant and helpful. It was a hard place to talk with friends because it was very loud. We didn't realize the roof top was closed, so we were on the main floor. Our experience on the roof top when the Union first opened was really good. It's changed a lot, or maybe it's just the main floor. We weren't looking for a loud sports bar atmosphere, but if you are, this is the place for you.
I was not impressed with my food however I should have paid closer attention to the menu. The buffalo chicken sandwich comes with a slaw on it, which is weird and should not exist, however, the menu clearly stated it came with that on so I should have either asked for it without or ordered something else. The buffalo sauce tasted more like hot Tabasco and the vinegar-based slaw was not a good match. The french fries are more like potato wedges and were delicious. I have eaten here before and enjoyed the food, so will just avoid this sandwich in the future.
Service was good and my friend enjoyed her meal.
just another sports bar with bar(f)food.
Not the dining experience I remember and was hoping for
The photos of food were what lured us in .. the glow of a billion televisions was a turn off and the booth for 5 people over a business dinner was tight but .. we all agreed the food was the draw, not so much the ambiance!
Service was exceptional. Food was so-so. Definitely not worth the price.
We ended up going here at the last minute for our wedding anniversary because it was within walking distance of our hotel. Our original plan was to go to a fancy steak place but ended up being not very hungry and did not want to spend a lot. It is about what I expected. I think my review is tainted though because I was unrealistically hoping for something romantic and "special" even though the restaurant was not described as such. Service was good. Food was good. Would be a good place for a casual night out with friends, co-workers or for a birthday. I would not recommend for a romantic anniversary dinner : ).
We always get the Filet Mignon when going out here. It is most tasty.
You can get it only on the rooftop, however. Not sure why that is, but it is a nice atmosphere up there.
Terrible service and extremely mediocre food
