UNI SUSHI BISTRO Ratings and Reviews
Made a reservation via OpenTable as my date and I were in the neighborhood and wanted to try out a new place. When we got to the restaurant, they stated that they can't serve us as its 20 mins before closing. Then why is it an option to book a table????? I understand the inconvenience of dining before closing, so don't allow OpenTable to accept reservations if it's not wanted.
Overall good experience, food and service both good. Their Godzilla roll was really good, and their robata skewers were good, too. Good selections besides just sushi, we tried a few different things. Music was a little aggressive / interesting for the space and atmosphere, but not a deterrent. Would definitely go back here.
We did not enjoy the restaurant and will not be back. Robata items I ordered had a sauce that was not listed on the menu; it was overwhelming and couldn't taste the item due to sauce. Tuna tolls were fine, but rest of food not so good. Quiet place but seems like they get a lot of carry out orders.
Great sushi and robata--my favorite place for these. And the edamame with spicy miso paste is tasty. But service was incredibly slow during our visit. We could never find our waitress when we needed her, so we ended up staying much longer than we wanted. There's no host, so there's no one to go to for help other than the sushi bar itself. The staff seemed so busy filling take-out orders, they didn't have time to serve seated customers.
We opted for a last minute sushi date after a day of shopping in the burbs. We were seated promptly. It is BYOB, so don't forget to bring your spirits (which can be bought right across the street if you forget). Servers check on you even if you aren't their assigned table. Food was beyond great. Fun rolls to choose from and great individual sashimi and sushi pieces. We will definitely be back.
The ambiance of Uni is great, very energetic, fun music- perfect if you are wanting to enjoy BYOB before a night of going out. Not perfect if you're there for fast sushi.
I have visited Uni several times and the sushi chefs seem busy working on your order but are actually filling take-out/delivery orders. You could be at Uni with two other tables and think that your food is coming soon because the chefs are working away but they end up boxing up 60% of what they are making. 1/3 visits have been timely, the rest have consisted of us waiting and waiting.
I chose to recommend Uni to a friend because the atmosphere is fun and the food is good...if you just need a snack before going out or want to enjoy a glass of wine with a side of food.
We sat waiting at a table with our byob wine for over an hour to receive only our miso soup order. There were only 2-3 other small tables at the time and were told there was a computer glitch slowing down our food order. Food was good by the time it came but there are so many other 3 star sushi places in Chicago that offer more good quality food quicker.
Uni Sushi is located in the quieter part of Bucktown away from the commercial heavy Damen and Milwaukee stretches. The service is good and as unassuming as its simple storefront location between Wood and Hermitage on North Av. Last dined with a party of 4 and we had an excellent time and were not rushed to leave. The staff allowed us to linger and savor our byob sake and wines all while enjoying our well prepared and tasty food selections. Give Uni a try. Bet you enjoy.
Food was bad...I mean, the fish was fresh but it was all so tasteless. The cold tofu salad was horrible; no chickpeas, micro greens or avocado. They gave me 3 tasteless chunks of tofu on some iceberg and just a splash of dressing. I did not enjoy the Sox maki. At all. Just didn't "get" it. Then we ordered the soft shell crab maki which I didn't even try but my friend said it was just "eh". And the service was soooooooo sloooooow.
Sorry. Won't be back.
