Uncle Lui's Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
I really hate writing this review because I feel for the owners, and it could very well be a matter of personal flavor. We always look for local places we can try and support, and found a groupon for this place. I remember eating Goulash as a kid and my husband loves my Schnitzels so we thought it would be fun. I did a lot of research before and was overwhelmed by the good reviews on both Groupon and Open table. So you can imagine my surprise. The place stood in time, from back in the 70's, but was clean. You do get a lot of food for your $$ but I the food was just not tasty and was poorly presented. I felt like a child who went to her Grandma and forced to eat food you hate... We really wanted to love it. The Veal Goulash was HUGE but just tasteless and the Spetzle was dry and have no flavor. I added so much salt and the gravies and really nothing was going to save this dish. The Schnitzel was just as tasteless. I am very sad to write this review and hope others will have a better experience.
One of our favorite places to eat and one that never has disappointed us. Service is always excellent and everyone is friendly and helpful. I love the hunter schnitzel but tried the wiener schnitzel this time.. delicious. Warning, go hungry; the portions are Trump-sized (HUGE) so expect to take home plenty. There are appetizers on the menu but if you are ordering entrees you don't really need them. You get large potato latkes, soup or salad, and coffee and dessert as part of your meal. the only negative is that finding the place is a bit tricky. It is located in a shopping mall on Oakland Park Blvd but because the shops are perpendicular to the main road rather than parallel, as most are, it is easy to pass by the first time.
The Service is excellent. The owners come to the table and are very courteous and considerate. The menu has many Hungarian options as well as blackboard specials. You will never leave hungry. The amount of food is huge and delicious. We have been to Uncle Lui's several times and always enjoy the food and service.
Being of Hungarian heritage, I was excited to have some of "mom's" cooking again. I recently visited for my 4th time, each time bringing someone new with me. Portions are huge and delicious. Take Home boxes are encouraged. I can't wait to introduce this restaurant to my new friends!
Been trying to get a reservation for this place for weeks, finally struck it rich and it was worth the wait. Just wish they didn't have those oil cloth table coverings.
The food was amazing starting with the corn chowder soup. There were so many delectable sounding entrees we had trouble choosing and will be back to try them all. The side dishes were to die for and for desert we had the apple strudel that was the best this side of Hungary.
Appetizer ( potato pancake & corn chowder) and desserts were exceptional thereby posing a challenge to the entrée. I had the Hunter's Schnitzel and it was good but too much. Difficult to use utensils as food hung over the edge of the plate. Between meat and one side dish did not see need for red cabbage and creamed spinach.
We came to this european style restaurant prepared with good appetite and left stuffed to the gills from great food and service and armed with enough leftovers for another meal the next day. Food was tasty and plentiful, freshly prepared, served in an old world friendly, unpretentious manner. Definitely on our must do list next time we are in the area. Worth the trip. Only two things to remember, to bring excellent appetite and the restaurant is closed Mondays and Tuesdays.
This restaurant has Hungarian favorites, all prepared excellently: Chicken Paprikash, Beef Gulash, Wiener Schnitzel and several other typical dishes. We always enjoy eating here and there's always plenty of leftovers to bring home for a second night's dinner.
You need to have an appetite to eat at Uncle Lui's although to go packages are the norm.
Great potato pancakes to start...hearty soups.....and huge portions from lamb shank to wiener schnitzel...we had the baked potato with the family style spinach and cabbage. We didn't need the bread selection and the apple strudel was a to go must have. All in all, an early evening with a hearty meal....not for every week, but once in awhile when one is famished.
This restaurant has been around for years and in a small strip by Lowe's. This place is small, with old furniture and decor, but the plates of food are abundant! Each plate will feed a minimum of two people, but they don't allow sharing. Keep in mind, this restaurant serves German/Hungarian food, so don't expect their Chicken Francese or Chicken Cacciatore to be like the Italian version. It WILL be different! Their Wiener Schnitzel is huge and delicious!! They start you off with bread rolls and big potato latkes, served with applesauce and sour cream. With your main entree, you receive a soup or salad. When they serve the entree, they also provide a bowl of creamed spinach and red cabbage, which they put in the middle of the table to share. Each meal ends with a dessert and coffee. The apple streudel is very good! The dishes range anywhere from.$17+, but they do offer an "Early Bird" menu, which costs slightly less (approx.$13), but the portions are smaller (not sure by how much). They have a menu, but at the door, there are quite a few daily specials posted on a chef's chalkboard. The staff is pleasant and although they don't allow sharing, they allowed my 10 yr. old son to share my plate, since they do not have a kids' menu. Prepared to take home leftovers!
It's a small restaurant with such great food and excellent service. If you like hungarian or German food this is an excellent choice. We took our friends there, drove 45 min.and we were happy that picked this restaurant.I would definitely recommend this restaurant to everybody. We will go there again and again.
