Uncle Jack's Steakhouse - Midtown 56th Street Ratings and Reviews
Once seated things fell apart. The waiter was bipolar swinging from downright rude to at least giving the occasional small smile. He was curt, preoccupied, and inattentive. My dinner fork contained a large glob of dried up stuck on what appeared to be mashed potato remnants. At least the waiter grimaced when I pointed it out. He got 2 of the four entree orders wrong and so my friend and I watched our husband dine on their steaks while we waited until they were nearly finished, then we received our correct meal. This was a big disappointment for our New Years Eve celebration in New York City.
We ordered the bone in fillet, but it was not available that night. I am guessing they sold out. Instead we settled on splitting the 12 oz fillet. Unfortunately rather than just cutting it in half, they pre-sliced it. The problem was it has been sitting in the kitchen for a while after they cut it so the steak soaked up a lot of the blood because it was medium rare. Still had good flavor, but in the future I would definitely request if they are going split it for us , do not slice it. I prefer bigger bites rather than thin slices, and it took away from the overall taste of a great steak. The baked clams were also good, as was the Wedge Salad. The bread was underwhelming and would have been much better had it been warm. I always love to get warm bread at a steak house, so the cold roll was a little disappointing . The baked Potato was also very good, although next time I would get it loaded with fixings on the side. The unsalted butter just did not add much to a beautifully cooked potato with a nicely salted skin. Overall the staff was excellent, and we will definitely come back, but completely disagree with pre-slicing a beautiful fillet like that. Really took away from what should have been a spectacular steak.
We have been to this restaurant everytime we go to NYC, usually a special occasion. This time our waiter was a real turn off. Once our order was put in he completely stopped checking on us. When he did stop he was very flirtatious with my son. We had a fixed menu for Christmas day. I had the NY strip and it was just O.K. My husband and I usually share the porterhouse but it was not an option on this day. Not sure we will go back. Beautiful atmosphere during the holidays.
We dined on Christmas Day which had a prixe fix menu. However Prime ribs of beef which had been on the Christmas menu originally was replaced with strip steak the day of. Not right! . We were very disappointed. The Caesar salad and Christmas salad barely had dressing. I would say an awful salad. Service was average. The servers need some retraining. The lobster bisque and Virginia ham was very good. The cheesecake was also good. The waiter never offered us coffee so we didn't have. You have to ask for more rolls as they only serve you one. Christmas decor was beautiful!
My husband and I enjoyed the set menu Christmas dinner at Uncle Jacks. Both soup options were very tasty. My husband had the lobster bisque which was delicious. The steaks were perfectly cooked and generous portions. They came with a creamy spinach accompaniment which I loved. The NY cheesecake was nice also. The salad course let the meal down a little. My Christmas salad was tasty but very small. The Cesar salad was a disappointing small pile of iceberg lettuce with a little bit of dressing and a small crispy bread balanced on top.
The restaurant had a pleasant atmosphere and was nicely decorated for Christmas. The service was fine and friendly. It wasn’t cheap but I’d say reasonable for Christmas Day in NY.
Overall a very enjoyable meal.
Waiter extremely inattentive seated at 7 received appetizers in normal time by 8:40 our main course still wasn’t served waiter came over 2 Times saying it will be our
In 5 min x 2 no aplogetic offered one of a drink. Said he could bring a soda fo the two not drinking . The busboy for lack of better description did better service recovery than the head waiter. He offered us cappuccino conversed with us and apologized sincerely
This was our 2nd time at this location. Our 1st experience was fabulous in December of 2016. This time the service was horrible. When we ordered our meals I was told right away that they were out of sweet potato fries (very odd for a steakhouse). Then we ordered garlic mashed instead. When the meal was served no garlic mashed were served. He then told us they were out of that also. We then waited for the check for quite a long time and then we were charged for the garlic mashed anyway. Very disappointed.
We happened to arrive more than an hour early for our 9PM reservation, and were first told that they still needed to seat the 8 PM reservations, and that it may be at least 45 minutes before we could be seated. But a few minutes later, suddenly it changed pleasantly, and the maître de said that he could seat us in 10 minutes, which he did. Thanks to the maître de, We got a nice quiet table upstairs in the front corner which we thought would be really nice, private and out of traffic. Unfortunately though, the waiters tended to forget us over there. We even had to call them to fill the water glasses. Bread was a pathetic little 2" piece that was doled out miserly. We waited for a half-hour after the salad and finally called and asked the waiter to check on our food. When it arrived immediately thereafter, it was barely lukewarm. Obviously, it had been ready for a while and forgotten.
For a place that claims to be "NEW YORKS BEST STEAKHOUSE", the steak was quite mediocre. I had ordered medium, and it was seared on the outside and very rare on the inside. I guess, on the average it was "medium"!
We have been coming to New York for years, and always considered Uncle Jack's our one staple that we looked forward to returning to. This year will be the last time we visit this restaurant, obviously living on their reputation. The service was terrible! Had to order drinks in the bar, the bartender was smiling forcibly but surly and rude. Took 10 minutes and a request to the manager to get some water, no one came to our table voluntarily. The food was not cooked to order.
Granted out was a busy pre-Christmas Saturday night, but isn't that what 50 plus years of experience should prepare a restaurant for? There are plenty of steakhouses in New York - we plan on visiting others from now on.
We were very disappointed. The service was okay, the salad was okay and the steak was fine but when you’re spending that kind of money, okay and fine shouldn’t describe the experience. Regarding the service, we asked one of the waiters for more bread (had only had 4 rolls total for 4 people) he tried to tell us they were out and then after getting us some he said that this was it, no more. Just wasn’t the best experience
Every time we come to NYC we dine at Uncle Jack’s. Service this time, however, was far from what we usually receive. They were busy but........we waited longer than normal to have our order taken. Then, the table next to us, who came in after us, had their order taken. We were not happy!!!!
We had a 5:00 reservation for which were pleasantly greeted at the door. The restaurant was decorated beautifully for the holidays and we were brought to an upstairs table which the host claimed as the best in the house! He did not disappoint! It was a round table for 6 as I requested which was next to the railing with a great view overlooking the entire restaurant. The food was wonderful but the service left A LOT to be desired. Luckily we left plenty of time before our 8:00 pm show. We were there one hour before we saw an appetizer and we had to repeatedly look for our waiter. We had salads for appetizers (one of the diners was disappointed with the Caesar salad a it wasn't a typical creamy dressing). My branzino was excellent and I asked for steamed vegetables and no potato. Vegetables were excellent as well. The steaks were served at the requested temperatures and the vegetables/sides were very good as well with the exception of the baked potatoes. They were heavily seasoned with paprika/pepper that it was not enjoyable for someone who doesn't enjoy spicy. Again, food was very good for the most part but the service not so good. I would go back for the food and ambiance (which was fabulous) but there are so many other steakhouses to choose from, it may be a while before we return.
Terrible experience. The 20 minute wait to get water and a greet should have been a sign. Service was poor, steak was under cooked (which is fine- that happens) sent back and steak returned BURNT. I was told that the burnt was actually the "char" they put on all their steaks. I really should have taken a picture- the steak was black and tasted well...burnt. Was actually a pretty good steak once I cut top and bottom burnt layers off. Being told I was wrong about the meal I was paying for ($220) ultimately left a bad taste in my mouth. This was our splurge night and was the only negative dining experience while in NYC. There are plenty of great steak restaurants in the city- please do not try this place. I don't think I have ever left a negative review anywhere for any business.
We stayed at the Hilton Club W 57. Was around the corner.
Began with excellent greeting and seating. Met old friends split the porterhouse for 2 medium rare. Perfectly cooked. Delicious and like butter. His wife had the tuna rare. Fantastic and my wife ha a special lobster bisque which was awesome. Salad was terrific as well. Highly recommend
This was our second time visiting Uncle Jack's from out of town. As with the first visit the food was outstanding! The restaurant is a bit pricey but on par for New York City. We did have an issue with our server which actually ruined what could have been a perfect dining experience. He was very inattentive and seemed as though he was under the influence. I have contacted the restaurant management about the experience who said that they were forwarding my complaints to the general manager but I have yet to hear back to them.
Very disappointed. It was decent, but not worth it. Several frustrating aspects, the menu online was not available- which is why we went. They didn't have chicken tenders for the kids menu, they also didn't have 1 of the 3 sandwiches they offered on that menu. So, we probably would not go back.
Not great. Yellowfin tuna was not good - no flavor and not cooked accurately. Don't bother ordering that dish.
Mac n cheese was good.
Potato was fine - can't really mess that up short of undercooking it.
Ny strip had a lot of fat.
Bread was not warm and butter was very cold.
It was decorated nicely for holidays.
Was very excited to try. The service really was lacking and it’s what they pride themselves on. Our waiter came by twice and the first time was to force us to order. The food was just OK. Who ever is the pastry chef did a wonderful job and that was the highlight of the entire meal. Who serves a steak on a cold plate. Not warm, hot, room temp, cold, this place.
We got there about 10 minutes early (6:50) and the hostess/manager offered to seat us right away because he needed our table for 8:15 reservation. At first I was like OK, so I said thank you. He looked at me and said she (my wife) already said that.
Again was very excited to try this place. Read some great reviews about it. If I was Willie Jack Degel, I’d be embarrassed and pull best Steakhouse in New York off the sign.
I'd been to Uncle Jack's previously. Was disappointed this time because I could tell from the minute I walked in with my 11-year old niece, that I was sized up and then stuck at a table next to the kitchen. In spite of the fact that I had a confirmed reservation, there was quite a bit of juggling and running around to determine where they were going to seat us. We definitely felt like 2nd-class patrons--even my niece noticed that service was slow and our waiter was not particularly attentive.
I will not waste my money on Uncle Jack's again.
