Thai
Uncle Boons is a popular spot for Thai food in Manhattan's Bowery neighborhood. Husband and wife owners Matt Danzer and Ann Redding created an eclectic dining atmosphere with an exotic menu. Thai pop music plays in the dimly lit room, creating a hip, after-hours vibe. Uncle Boons' inspired cocktails are offered by the pitcher, and there's a wide variety of wines served by the glass or bottle. For an extra-refreshing treat on a hot day, opt for the beer slushie. Serving Thai food with a twist, Uncle Boons' offers large and small plates. Dishes like Thai curry beef ribs and the Thai sausage duo will give your taste buds something to remember.

My boyfriend's parents, who are part-time Manhattan dwellers, highly recommended this place. We had an early reservation (5:30 PM) on a Saturday night, and while the place was quiet when we entered, it filled up quick. This is obviously a very well-regarded joint in NYC for several very good reasons. The drinks, although pricey, are large, exotic, and strong. The vibe is casual. The service is excellent (our water glasses were never empty--a good thing when ingesting some seriously spice). And the food is delicious. Standout dishes included the lamb laab salad (mouth-tingling in its level of peppery intensity), the curried beef short ribs (super-tender with a kick), and the bone marrow satay (I can see this turning into a periodic craving). If you like Thai food with a street twist, Uncle Boons is worth a try (but do make a reservation).

The food indeed is different. But I am not sure simply because they use frog legs, sweetbread, snail, etc then it makes their food better than other Thai restaurants. My waiter was attentive but management in the front of the house was clueless. They originally labeled my 7:00 pm reservation as a "no show" before 6:00 pm. Really? How could this happen? Then when I questioned them, they tried to blame on OpenTable software. No way. This was their own fault and they didn't even want to admit it. Once they recovered my reservation... The food is fine. Fine but in my mind not great. It is just different. Two things I ordered were way over salted (the pork ribs and the beef short rib curry). The ambiance is fun but not much difference from Fatty Crab or Decoy. All and all - the food is fine. Service is fine. Front of the house almost comically clueless. They have a Michelin star but I think Sum Tum Der in Alphabet City, which also has a Michelin star, is much better and people there much more organized.

Nice environment , warm atmosphere , polite and knowledgeable waitress . Appetizers (minced lamb salad and broiled marrow bone) were excellent . However my main dish - assorted seafood curry with noodles - was tasteless while my wife's whole fish was good but had no kick and was very light on spice. Small and Very expensive wine list : $60 for a bottle of white wine to more than $100 for a decent red. As a result , in the 5 - 6 tables I could see across mine , no one ordered a bottle of wine and almost everyone went for beer ... Net Net , tamed down and very Americanized with Appetizers being a much better bet than the main courses and a pricing policy for wine that does not make sense .

Incredible food (the best Thai I've ever had!), authentic flavours, great atmosphere and excellent service. My boyfriend and I are big foodies, and tried several restaurants around the city during our one-week stay. This was by far our favourite meal. Every part of the experience was fantastic - we'll definitely be back during our next visit to New York!

After hearing a lot of amazing things about this restaurant, I was really excited to try it out. However, I felt like the food was on the mediocre side and the drinks weak. I was also put off by our waiter's attitude (in trying to get us to order more, rushing us out). Overall, I think there are much tastier and nicer thai restaurants in the city at this price point.

Nothing short of brilliant here. Each dish seems effortlessly casual, but you know that every one is the result of a masterfully created recipe and great fresh ingredients. Don't expect one size fits all Thai sauces with a choice of protein. Just trust the chefs and ask your waiter for advice if you are stymied by menu. Sweetbreads were probably the best I've ever eaten. Chicken liver and pineapple? Just say please. Go with a group do you can taste it all.

Food was pretty good. Service was a mixed feel. Was pretty good about the water but maybe it was the waiter's off day or since it was busy that night but he forgot about my drink until we had to remind him for it. Seemed to give a bit of an attitude towards the middle

Was looking forward to dining at this establishment. With all the buzz on the authentic food it sounded terrific. While we did have a good meal -- including the vegetarian noodle dish -- nothing stood out. While the service was polite, it was slow and inattentive. The ambiance was a dive. All in all, it Uncle Boons' didn't live up to the reputation.

We, a group of five, could barely have a conversation throughout the meal because of the level of the music. Two of us asked at least three times to have the music turned down. They said they did, but it remained just as loud, spoiling our meal, even though we changed our table. We will never go there again, despite the tastiness and originality of the food. We just read that the restaurant has been awarded one Michelin star. Restaurants with one Michelin star that I've dined in in Europe are way superior in ambiance and obviously the Michelin standard is disappointingly lower in the US.

The food is flavorful and imaginative. My friend and I enjoyed several dishes: Sweetbread and noodle salad; Heavenly pig ears; Grilled seafood plate (with great dipping sauces); and Grilled pork jowl with asparagus. Each plate was delicious and the portions were generous . "Boons Brew" is a very tasty ale.

great food: pig ears as snack, spicy chicken salad (very spicy), sweetbreads (my favorite) and a fish and shrimp curry with glass noodles. very good wine recommendation. I requested a quite corner table and really got the nicest table in the restaurant in the back room. the bar and first room are more crowded and loud. it was a great experience and we will definitely be back soon

I brought a friend here from out of town as I had always been wanting to try this place. All of the food we got was delicious (grilled baby octopus, the crispy noodle salad that we subbed cauliflower in for instead of sweetbreads, and the crab fried rice). Was a little put off though when we tried to order the spicy rotisserie chicken and the waitress basically persuaded us out of it, claiming how spicy it was and she had never seen anyone cry but she had seen them sweat....now I'm both intrigued and scared of this dish. Our drinks were good as well- I got a cocktail, my friend got a sparkling wine. We were both full off of 2 small plates and 1 large!

This place is all about the food. Inventive and bursting with flavor combinations that excite and surprise. The chefs are doing great things here. I only wish they would change their reservations policy and open up more spots to Open Table. My previous attempt at going, my wife and I showed up at 8 pm on a Friday night and they claimed to not have our reservation (this was before they got on Open Table and reservations were made, or rather not made, on their web site). That problem has, at least, improved. But glad I went, food is great, and I wil happily go back.

One thing that that really turns me off is when a restaurant charges for a refill on a club soda, and yes they indeed did this. The short rib was excellent.....the other food (grilled seafood platter, crab fried rice, and botal leaves (sp?)) were all good, but nothing spectatcular. The coconut sundae is however fantastic and I would go back just for that.

i have very mixed feelings about my dinner at Uncle Boon's. I was so excited to try their inventive Thai food. We were sat right under the speaker, so it was a bit hard to hear one another (I'm usually not that sensitive to music at restaurants but the speaker was literally less than 2 feet above my head). We were concerned about spiciness for one of our party who doesn't handle spice, and we were told that spice levels couldn't be modified for any dish. That might be true for the curries but for the water spinach it was just spicy due to bits of bird chilies- couldn't they just have been omitted? Most of the food, even though we ordered the mild things, were a bit spicy anyway. We ordered the crab fries rice as one of our main dishes because we were told it was the mildest. We mentioned that they please omit cilantro as we all hate and do not eat it. The waiter said okay- but cilantro was mixed up into two other dishes! A good waiter might have noted as much when we told him explicitly we couldn't eat it. Instead we got some attitude from the waiter for asking questions about the menu. I understand that some restaurants just aren't accommodating but we weren't asking for anything especially difficult to omit. The (much nicer) server pouring out water at the end of the night, when we mentioned that we were surprised how many of the dishes had cilantro, said that they will only take food preferences seriously if you lie and say it is an allergy. That seems pretty silly. As for the food: it was a bit hit or miss. The baby octopus was great. The bone marrow satay as well. I've have better and more flavorful crab fried rice at takeout Thai. The riblets were fine but hard to eat. The mee krob was disappointing to me since it's a dish I usually love- the the balance was different than I expected- very few noodles and nearly all bean sprouts. I did not enjoy. Given the rude waiter, loud music, unocommodating service, and just ok food I would give this a skip.

It's a good thing I can't go to Uncle Boons every day or every week, because I would worry that I would tire of it. The food is so good it makes us want to yell happy expletives from the rooftops. My partner put it best, "The food at Uncle Boons makes me Happy." For those of unlucky enough not to have the means to get to Thailand and eat in a Thai family home, Uncle Boons soothes that pain. Not a single seat in the house is a bad one! Eat with one or ten, and you will have the same fantastic experience. I urge new Uncle Boons diners to go with an open mind and heart, for there are flavors and layers and textures and colors and scents that will arouse your every sense.

One of my favorite places in NYC: probably my #1. Every single pick on the menu is a winner; the flavors here are unbeatable, from the 'drinking snacks' to the cocktails, to everything I've had on the menu. Fit for walk ins and reservations, super friendly staff, great vibe, great location. Can't reccomend more.
