Service was decent, food was mediocre at best. Will definitely not be returning.
Fabulous sushi but pricey!!! Interesting flavors and extremely fresh fish. Wonderful service as well. Thanks Larry!!! Will definitely go back, but the meal was more expensive than it should've been.
Hands down - best sushi we've ever had! The salmon in the sesame oil was so good we ordered seconds!
This restaurant is the best Japanese food you will find in the Pittsburgh area. We have been going here since it first open. I actually proposed to my wife at this restaurant. Mr. Shu is the best at his craft and your palate will not be disappointed. You want the best Japanese cuisine with the greatest taste and enjoyment, go to Umi.
Mr. Shu is a genuis ... We have been visiting Umi for years and have never been disappointed!
Anniversary dinner, awesome experience but portions are very small. Food tasted incredible, service was top of the line
Umi is a hidden gem of Pittsburgh. My husband and I went here for the first time and loved it. The vibes of the restaurant are very cool and authentic. The food was amazing and they surprisingly have a great and unique dessert menu. Highly recommend!
Always great and pricey but great nonetheless. Fresh ingredients skillfully prepared.
Beautiful food and great service every time.
For the price the sushi offerings werd very small and, therefor, over priced. I went to a similar restaurant on Lawrenceville where sushi was just as tasty, the portions larger and more reasonably priced and the ambiance just as pleasant.
Umi used to be the best sushi in town but sadly, no more. My yellowtail with jalapeño tasted bland & fishy! Not one new dish on the menu. Way over-priced for very small pieces of sushi. Decor is tired and worn out. So disappointed.
New Years eve
Our favorite restaurant anywhere. Mr. Shu is a genius, the service is amazing and the food is to die for.
Worst omakase experience ever. Got the same fish twice with only a raw garlic being added. The chef put cream cheese on one of the nigiri and a sliced cherry tomato. Plated were dirty and they used the same sweet sauce for almost every dish. Waste of money.
I have had Ben a server multiple times now. He is very knowledgeable on the menu and cares deeply for his guests experience. Ben is an asset to Umi. I look forward to dining here again. Food and service always exceed expectations.
Way too much money for the value delivered
The sushi and the fish (Black Cod) were outstanding.
The Fish Tempura not so much, but I don't know of any restaurant in Pittsburgh that has real tempura (as done in Japan).
Overall, a good experience, with excellent service, if a bit pricey.
Enjoyed everything about the dining experience. First the valet service was excellent in service. The waiter explained the menu and ingredients of the cocktails. Have great recommendation for a unknoweledged sushi diner. The food was amazing.
The food is generally good, but seemed that every dish come with the same sweet ponzu sauce. Other than that it’s all good
This is my favorite restaurant over the past 14 years when I first was introduced. Amazing sushi , miso cod, red snapper with truffle etc. everything is amazing.
Very meager portions for the $$ price. $9 for 2 skimpy pieces of vegetable Tempura - really? Had to walk up two very dimly lit sets of stairs - about 35 steps. For the elderly, this was very difficult. If there was disabled access; i.e. elevator, we didn't see it. Would not recommend this restaurant.
As always the sushi and other plates are very good. The quality of the food is outstanding. After many years of coming here, the creativity needs to be increased on the menu.
Great, will be going back!
We had the omakase and the food is very, very good although I would have liked to have had one more hot dish. The real problem was a table of six who were incredibly loud. So much so, that many other diners started complaining to management. I would like to go again and try it one more time.
The restaurant is wonderful.. our table was great it was the 6 top next to us that has never dined at a nice establishment before. They were loud and drunk!! I'm surprised the wait staff didn't politely ask them to quiet down. It was our anniversary and we almost had to move tables because we had a hard time hearing one another talk... once they left the evening was very enjoyable.
Cod was delicious and well prepared! The Miso cod was perfectly cooked.
Best fish in Pgh. Really reminds me of Nobu in NYC,
By FAR the best sushi in Pittsburgh. Mr. Shu is a genius!
Awesome food but very expensive. But if you love sushi and your a foody it’s well worth the cost. The chef’s 11 course meal is awesome and worth it
The food is amazing every time I eat here. Mr Cho is the best. Staff is always friendly. Love Umi
I think this place is probably better for hibachi or sushi. We'll try that next time.
We had an exceptional time at Umi. The food was delicious! Sashimi was very fresh.
This is some of the freshest sushi I've ever had. Also ask for the chef's sake recommendation.
We expected more for the pricey bill. Portions were small and just OK. Would not return. My husband was hungry when we got home...
This meal was an experience definitely a must for those who love authentic sushi/sashimi.
My husband and I went for a "date night". Started with specialty cocktails, then splurged for the 7 course Omakase dinner with dessert + a nice bottle of sake. Everything was outstanding! We've had sushi in NYC and Tokyo, and this was just as good -- fish was very fresh, preparation outstanding and very creative. Flavors of each course were unique, and the whole meal flowed nicely from end-to-end. The desserts were very good too. We definitely will be back, and make Umi our "go to" for sushi in Pittsburgh.
I haven't been to Umi in over 12 years (I don't live in Pittsburgh anymore) and last time I was there I remembered a completely different experience to what I had last week. The Nigiri Sushi cuts of fish were small and very uneventful, the fish did not taste fresh. The "Toro" they had was not O-Toro (which is fatty tuna, the best part of the tuna) which they professed, but more Chu-Toro (medium fatty tuna). Umi (the sea-urchin roe) should have been nice whole pieces, instead it was macerated mess on a roll. They did not even have fresh wasabi root, they provided mushy poorly prepared wasabi powder mess! What Umi was serving was poor abrogation of Japanese cuisine. I will not recommend this place to anyone. Absolutely horrible food!
Food was delicious but wildly overpriced and the portions were outstandingly small. Could have gotten better value elsewhere but still the same quality
