About Umi Japanese Restaurant
Umi offers an evening of unparalleled dining, featuring New York style sushi and Japanese cuisine and meticulous preparation. At center stage is our awe-inspiring omakase: a multi-course adventurous meal prepared by Mr. Shu, winner of Pittsburgh Magazine’s Chef of the Year.
In addition to world-class sushi, Mr. Shu and his staff also prepare a selection of dinner entrées including teriyakis and tempuras. House cocktails, as well as a variety of sakes and wines are available to complement your experience.
Umi's dining room transforms the top floor of a Shadyside Victorian row house into a delightful Japanese garden. Authentic tatami seating, a large sushi bar, and a delicate waterfall create a transcendentally peaceful dining experience.

Umi Japanese Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
Worst omakase experience ever. Got the same fish twice with only a raw garlic being added. The chef put cream cheese on one of the nigiri and a sliced cherry tomato. Plated were dirty and they used the same sweet sauce for almost every dish. Waste of money.
Very meager portions for the $$$ price. $9 for 2 skimpy pieces of vegetable Tempura - really? Had to walk up two very dimly lit sets of stairs - about 35 steps. For the elderly, this was very difficult. If there was disabled access; i.e. elevator, we didn't see it. Would not recommend this restaurant.
We had the omakase and the food is very, very good although I would have liked to have had one more hot dish. The real problem was a table of six who were incredibly loud. So much so, that many other diners started complaining to management. I would like to go again and try it one more time.
The restaurant is wonderful.. our table was great it was the 6 top next to us that has never dined at a nice establishment before. They were loud and drunk!! I'm surprised the wait staff didn't politely ask them to quiet down. It was our anniversary and we almost had to move tables because we had a hard time hearing one another talk... once they left the evening was very enjoyable.
My husband and I went for a "date night". Started with specialty cocktails, then splurged for the 7 course Omakase dinner with dessert + a nice bottle of sake. Everything was outstanding! We've had sushi in NYC and Tokyo, and this was just as good -- fish was very fresh, preparation outstanding and very creative. Flavors of each course were unique, and the whole meal flowed nicely from end-to-end. The desserts were very good too. We definitely will be back, and make Umi our "go to" for sushi in Pittsburgh.
I haven't been to Umi in over 12 years (I don't live in Pittsburgh anymore) and last time I was there I remembered a completely different experience to what I had last week. The Nigiri Sushi cuts of fish were small and very uneventful, the fish did not taste fresh. The "Toro" they had was not O-Toro (which is fatty tuna, the best part of the tuna) which they professed, but more Chu-Toro (medium fatty tuna). Umi (the sea-urchin roe) should have been nice whole pieces, instead it was macerated mess on a roll. They did not even have fresh wasabi root, they provided mushy poorly prepared wasabi powder mess! What Umi was serving was poor abrogation of Japanese cuisine. I will not recommend this place to anyone. Absolutely horrible food!
I have always been a big fan of Umi. Specifically, the Omakase dinner. I invited friends to join me for this fantastic experience. However, I was disappointed. The menu of the omakase dinner has not changed in 10 years. Further, this time, it seemed as though every dish was topped with the same sauce....ponzu sauce. I was sadly disappointed and also shocked that the menu has gone downhill, but the price continues to increase. Further, the chef was unwilling to create a gluten free option simply using tamari sauce instead of soy. This is disappointing for a dinner that costs ~ $100 per person. I will not go back.
