Umi offers an evening of unparalleled dining, featuring New York style sushi and Japanese cuisine and meticulous preparation. At center stage is our awe-inspiring omakase: a multi-course adventurous meal prepared by Mr. Shu, winner of Pittsburgh Magazine’s Chef of the Year.

In addition to world-class sushi, Mr. Shu and his staff also prepare a selection of dinner entrées including teriyakis and tempuras. House cocktails, as well as a variety of sakes and wines are available to complement your experience.

Umi's dining room transforms the top floor of a Shadyside Victorian row house into a delightful Japanese garden. Authentic tatami seating, a large sushi bar, and a delicate waterfall create a transcendentally peaceful dining experience.

We love Umi!! The food is so fresh and so creatively prepared - it's absolutely wonderful!! If it was closer to our home, we would go a lot more often!
The service is also wonderful! The servers are always very knowledgeable about the food and the preparation, which we appreciate very much!
We will definitely be back...my birthday is in June!!!!!

Had 7 courses and all were excellent, sat at the sushi bar. Very fresh sashimi tickled the taste buds. It's expensive but the quality is well worth the price and experience.

Great dinner at Umi as expected. Arguably still the best sushi in Pittsburgh and certainly very high quality fish presented creatively, along with a number of cooked and lightly cooked Japanese dishes with a twist. Could be considered overpriced but HIGHLY suggest NOT ordering the Omakase and instead selecting off the menu and exploring. Much better value and more interesting.

We went for a date night and LOVED it. Food was fresh and delicious, our server was very helpful and personable, the atmosphere was mature and intimate. Perfect for an adult night out. Ideal for sushi lovers!

By far the best sushi in Pittsburgh. Spoke to the waiter about where they got their fish from as it tasted like it was caught the same day, and Pittsburgh obviously isnt near any ocean or sea. The chef gets his fish shipped in fresh daily, and I could easily tell as I have a lot of experience with seafood. Absolutely mouth watering. Now be prepared to pay a decent amount of money too. Japanese dishes, if traditional, are not very big at all. A $22 salmon tatare entre was very small. My bill was $160 with a tip, and that's just me, although I do have a large appetite. So if you go here starving, you may leave a lil bit hungry, unless you want to pay $$. Anyways, I can't complain. Deserts were fantastic, everything was A1. Would definitely go back again! Absolutely amazing.

Fabulous sushi but pricey!!! Interesting flavors and extremely fresh fish. Wonderful service as well. Thanks Larry!!! Will definitely go back, but the meal was more expensive than it should've been.

This restaurant is the best Japanese food you will find in the Pittsburgh area. We have been going here since it first open. I actually proposed to my wife at this restaurant. Mr. Shu is the best at his craft and your palate will not be disappointed. You want the best Japanese cuisine with the greatest taste and enjoyment, go to Umi.

Umi is a hidden gem of Pittsburgh. My husband and I went here for the first time and loved it. The vibes of the restaurant are very cool and authentic. The food was amazing and they surprisingly have a great and unique dessert menu. Highly recommend!

For the price the sushi offerings werd very small and, therefor, over priced. I went to a similar restaurant on Lawrenceville where sushi was just as tasty, the portions larger and more reasonably priced and the ambiance just as pleasant.

Umi used to be the best sushi in town but sadly, no more. My yellowtail with jalapeño tasted bland & fishy! Not one new dish on the menu. Way over-priced for very small pieces of sushi. Decor is tired and worn out. So disappointed.

Worst omakase experience ever. Got the same fish twice with only a raw garlic being added. The chef put cream cheese on one of the nigiri and a sliced cherry tomato. Plated were dirty and they used the same sweet sauce for almost every dish. Waste of money.

The sushi and the fish (Black Cod) were outstanding.
The Fish Tempura not so much, but I don't know of any restaurant in Pittsburgh that has real tempura (as done in Japan).
Overall, a good experience, with excellent service, if a bit pricey.

Enjoyed everything about the dining experience. First the valet service was excellent in service. The waiter explained the menu and ingredients of the cocktails. Have great recommendation for a unknoweledged sushi diner. The food was amazing.

Very meager portions for the $$ price. $9 for 2 skimpy pieces of vegetable Tempura - really? Had to walk up two very dimly lit sets of stairs - about 35 steps. For the elderly, this was very difficult. If there was disabled access; i.e. elevator, we didn't see it. Would not recommend this restaurant.

We had the omakase and the food is very, very good although I would have liked to have had one more hot dish. The real problem was a table of six who were incredibly loud. So much so, that many other diners started complaining to management. I would like to go again and try it one more time.

The restaurant is wonderful.. our table was great it was the 6 top next to us that has never dined at a nice establishment before. They were loud and drunk!! I'm surprised the wait staff didn't politely ask them to quiet down. It was our anniversary and we almost had to move tables because we had a hard time hearing one another talk... once they left the evening was very enjoyable.
