Umi Japanese Restaurant
Umi offers an evening of unparalleled dining, featuring New York style sushi and Japanese cuisine and meticulous preparation. At center stage is our awe-inspiring omakase: a multi-course adventurous meal prepared by Mr. Shu, winner of Pittsburgh Magazine’s Chef of the Year.
In addition to world-class sushi, Mr. Shu and his staff also prepare a selection of dinner entrées including teriyakis and tempuras. House cocktails, as well as a variety of sakes and wines are available to complement your experience.
Umi's dining room transforms the top floor of a Shadyside Victorian row house into a delightful Japanese garden. Authentic tatami seating, a large sushi bar, and a delicate waterfall create a transcendentally peaceful dining experience.

Very delicious! My husband and i went here and it was amazing. So much different varieties of sushi and our waiter larry was very informing with telling us what fish we were eating. I would recommend this to anyone! If you love raw sushi give this place a try it’s very fresh! The best in pittsburgh we will be back again!
Extremely disappointing experience on several levels.
- Ordered an 11-course omakase tasting menu. Menu composition was underwhelming; no variation in texture or plating, dishes repeated almost exactly, sloppy flavor profiles. Sweet ponzu on almost everything, poor knife work on the garnishes. Everything was served on the same slightly stained plain white plates.
- I have had many tasting menus at this price point or above in my lifetime, and never have I been quite so bored. Plain white plate, exactly three slices of fish, no textural contrast, nothing to distinguish it from the last course. Mostly just mediocre, although there was undiluted fake truffle oil dripped on a few things that made them almost inedible. Likewise for some decent red snapper ruined by jagged chunks of raw garlic for some reason.
- Service was robotic - drop dish, recite rehearsed description, leave. No actual interaction or reading of the table. A sake was ordered and the server suggested a replacement when they were out of stock, then never bothered to check on how the table liked the replacement - it was nothing like what was ordered and not very good.
Very disappointed. We visited the restaurants a few years back and had an outstanding experience. Tonite menu was limited to 2 meal choices only. Could only order al a carte after ordering one of the 2 meal choices. Meal choices were all sashimi dinners. No soup/salads were offered. If would have been notified before day of reservations of this limited menu would have canceled reservation. Very pricey dinner for so many limitations. Will not be returning.
Expertly curated dining experience. It was delicious!
Had a wonderful experience - waiter was very knowledgeable on the food and sake selections. Their tasting menu is a fantastic experience. Would absolutely recommend.
The delicate flavors of the multiple varieties of fish, the freshness and subtile décoration of the plate makes this place a true Pittbsurgh treasure. We have been fond of the Omakase for many years. Each time it is pure enchantement. .
11 course meal prepared by the wizard chef Mr. Shu was fantastic! Every course was exquisite. And we did not get overly full with this choice, which was our concern. Delicious cocktails also! Thank you Jeff and Ashley also for the service and hospitality!
This is the most amazing food in western Pennsylvania. Mr. Shu truly makes Pittsburgh a great city.
I highly recommend the Omikase. The sequence of tender fish with delectable sauce one after another is one of my favorite experiences.
If you are looking for a good sashimi meal in Pittsburgh, this is the place excellent food and service
Service was fantastic and food was deliciously memorable.
My favorite place to eat! Amazing food and superior service.
Amazing every single time!
Wonderful food and service. A favorite.
We love Umi and enjoy it every time we go.
Food quality was excellent, but menu was limited and very expensive. There was no indication on the website that the menu was limited to omasake only. Diners were forced to purchase the omasake even though they didn't want that.
We were stuck!
Love Umi! I’ve been waiting to go for my “belated” birthday since COVID happened in March. Everything was spectacular! And our waiter was wonderful, energetic, and explained each dish as they came out.
We can’t wait to go again! We are looking forward to when their full menu comes back
My husband and I dined here for our 16th anniversary. It was an absolutely amazing experience. We opted for the 11 course meal and it was worth it. The portions were perfect so you easily get through all the courses. The service was outstanding. The actual food was awesome, sublime, spectacular - pick the best adjective you know and the food will live up to it. We will be back!
The service was exceptional. However, for the price, we were not at all impressed with the meal we experienced. We left feeling hungry.
Best experience there to date and we’ve being going there for years, highly recommend.
Outstanding restaurant for food, service and ambiance. Love it so much, appreciate it now more than ever!
Umi is perfect for a special date night -- best sushi and service in the city.
We had the 11 course seating and it felt like Groundhog Day because every single entree was exactly like the one before. And it was extremely expensive for what we actually got.
Every course of our dinner was perfect. And our waitress was the SWEETEST. Props to our waitress working the evening shift on October 10th.
So happy that Umi is back. The meal was an incredible 2-person family style. The regular menu is not available yet and so be aware that the current options are delicious but very pricey
We drove 2 hours to have a good dinner, but had a Great Dinner! Where we live in Cleveland, good quality sushi is not available. I am glad to have found this restaurant and hope to go there again soon!
Delicious food as always. Love everything about umi.
Some of the best sushi I’ve had. Japan-level quality!
Everything was wonderful except for the raw garlic on fish course. Way too overpowering. But other than the food was truly amazing and the service was perfect.
The best place to eat sushi in Pittsburgh. The covid19 era seating plan provides more than ample space for an intimate meal. We enjoyed the family-style menu option this time around, having previously enjoyed the 7-course tasting meal.
Incredible, as always!
Very good food but prepare to pay a lot.
The food was amazing as always. Our server Larry was extremely attentive. Three of us were regulars and we had one newcomer to the Omakase dining experience. Larry really made her feel very welcome and comfortable, and the presentations of the food were excellent.
This was my first visit to indoor dining at a restaurant after the quarantine began. They practice safe distance and provide hand sanitizer upon arrival as well as thermometer to check temperature. All staff wore masks and tables set up with distancing in mind. Our server was amazing, very friendly and personable and enjoyed sharing details about our tasting menu. The food is always fantastic at Umi and we had a great time and were pleased to have them open again.
Incredible as always. Best sushi in Pittsburgh by a mile
Umi provides the best dining service and shares unique flavors and courses that can not be found anywhere else in the city.
Just the best of a japanese gastronomy in Pittsburgh
So glad Mr. Shu and the crew are back!! Awesome as usual!!
Best Restaurant in the city!! Always consistently perfect food!
