Umi offers an evening of unparalleled dining, featuring New York style sushi and Japanese cuisine and meticulous preparation. At center stage is our awe-inspiring omakase: a multi-course adventurous meal prepared by Mr. Shu, winner of Pittsburgh Magazine’s Chef of the Year.
In addition to world-class sushi, Mr. Shu and his staff also prepare a selection of dinner entrées including teriyakis and tempuras. House cocktails, as well as a variety of sakes and wines are available to complement your experience.
Umi's dining room transforms the top floor of a Shadyside Victorian row house into a delightful Japanese garden. Authentic tatami seating, a large sushi bar, and a delicate waterfall create a transcendentally peaceful dining experience.

We love Umi and enjoy it every time we go.
Food quality was excellent, but menu was limited and very expensive. There was no indication on the website that the menu was limited to omasake only. Diners were forced to purchase the omasake even though they didn't want that.

Love Umi! I’ve been waiting to go for my “belated” birthday since COVID happened in March. Everything was spectacular! And our waiter was wonderful, energetic, and explained each dish as they came out.
We can’t wait to go again! We are looking forward to when their full menu comes back
My husband and I dined here for our 16th anniversary. It was an absolutely amazing experience. We opted for the 11 course meal and it was worth it. The portions were perfect so you easily get through all the courses. The service was outstanding. The actual food was awesome, sublime, spectacular - pick the best adjective you know and the food will live up to it. We will be back!
The service was exceptional. However, for the price, we were not at all impressed with the meal we experienced. We left feeling hungry.

We had the 11 course seating and it felt like Groundhog Day because every single entree was exactly like the one before. And it was extremely expensive for what we actually got.
Every course of our dinner was perfect. And our waitress was the SWEETEST. Props to our waitress working the evening shift on October 10th.
So happy that Umi is back. The meal was an incredible 2-person family style. The regular menu is not available yet and so be aware that the current options are delicious but very pricey
We drove 2 hours to have a good dinner, but had a Great Dinner! Where we live in Cleveland, good quality sushi is not available. I am glad to have found this restaurant and hope to go there again soon!

Everything was wonderful except for the raw garlic on fish course. Way too overpowering. But other than the food was truly amazing and the service was perfect.
The best place to eat sushi in Pittsburgh. The covid19 era seating plan provides more than ample space for an intimate meal. We enjoyed the family-style menu option this time around, having previously enjoyed the 7-course tasting meal.

The food was amazing as always. Our server Larry was extremely attentive. Three of us were regulars and we had one newcomer to the Omakase dining experience. Larry really made her feel very welcome and comfortable, and the presentations of the food were excellent.
This was my first visit to indoor dining at a restaurant after the quarantine began. They practice safe distance and provide hand sanitizer upon arrival as well as thermometer to check temperature. All staff wore masks and tables set up with distancing in mind. Our server was amazing, very friendly and personable and enjoyed sharing details about our tasting menu. The food is always fantastic at Umi and we had a great time and were pleased to have them open again.

Just a great evening. The sushi lovers in the group raved about their choices. My teriyaki steak was just as good. Great time.......and high marks for the chef and server.
We had a great anniversary dinner. The 11 course omikase is so worth it. We have had Ashley as a server twice and she is outstanding. So knowledgeable about each course. We have really enjoyed every meal here and will come back again.

A few months ago I went to a ryokan in Japan and I was really missing the meal experience we received there. I was hoping this might be an enjoyable local experience to ease how much I missed the real thing and it absolutely was! The food was incredible and the tatami table experience was very relaxing even at 5’2” (me) and 6’8” (my husband). One of the best dates and meals we have ever had.

We celebrated our 16th dating anniversary at Umi. The atmosphere was very intimate, and there was almost no one there when we arrived at 6pm on a Friday night. The restaurant slowly filled up as the night went on, but it never seemed too loud or busy.
We were confused at first, because we were ushered to the traditional low-table Japanese seating, but there were chairs, so instead of kneeling we had to bend our legs to the side. Then we figured out that the floor was lowered under the table, so we could sit with our legs down like in a normal chair! So, it's not really traditional seating at all. Not a big deal, just would be good to know, instead of looking like idiots for a minute.
The food was excellent! Best fish we've ever had. The presentation was excellent. We ordered the 7-course omakase, along with a carafe of the cold nigori sake. No complaints at all, except maybe the price.
All in all, a wonderful spot for a romantic special occasion.
My husband and I treated ourselves to the 7 course omakase for his birthday, and it was incredible and absolutely worth the money. That night the courses consisted of 5 raw dishes, 2 cooked dishes, and a dessert. It was the perfect balance and we were amazed at the flavor Mr. Shu is able to pack into the dishes. I highly recommend the splurge of the omakase for a special night out, it made for a very memorable experience.
