Umi Japanese Restaurant
Umi offers an evening of unparalleled dining, featuring New York style sushi and Japanese cuisine and meticulous preparation. At center stage is our awe-inspiring omakase: a multi-course adventurous meal prepared by Mr. Shu, winner of Pittsburgh Magazine’s Chef of the Year.
In addition to world-class sushi, Mr. Shu and his staff also prepare a selection of dinner entrées including teriyakis and tempuras. House cocktails, as well as a variety of sakes and wines are available to complement your experience.
Umi's dining room transforms the top floor of a Shadyside Victorian row house into a delightful Japanese garden. Authentic tatami seating, a large sushi bar, and a delicate waterfall create a transcendentally peaceful dining experience.
New favorite sushi place! The food was great and so were the cocktails. We went for my fiances birthday and they also gave us chocolate pudding. Will be back!
11 course omakase is the best meal in Pittsburgh. Larry our waiter was fantastic.
The food was close to perfect, and the service could not have been better.
Went with friends from NYC that love sushi and have eaten sushi from the best restaurants in the world. They loved it and said it was one of there top two sushi experiences. I was glad to hear that because I love Umi, but always wonder if pittsburgh good or great by any standard. It’s definitely the latter.
Btw don’t touch the soy sauce or wasabi this sushi is too good to waste either on it.
Best restaurant in Pittsburgh. Mr. Chu is the best sushi chef!
Overpriced for sushi and sashimi dishes available elsewhere for more reasonable price and realistic portions
Umi sushi is the best. Nothing else in Pittsburgh comes close.
It was outstanding food but the service wasn’t the best, also the place needs to be updated. Just looks uncared for.
Love this place, best sushi in Pittsburgh and always great service too.
The food was fabulous, service was perfect. I can’t wait to eat there again!
First time in Pittsburgh! Everyone at Umi was beyond friendly. Made my husband and I, as South Carolinians, feel welcomed. Daniel was a fantastic server who gave us the heads up on what to order and when. She and her fellow coworker gave us some great suggestions for what to do in the city for our next stop. Sushi was unbelievably fresh. Some of the best sushi I've had in the states. Hot sake was flavorful! Traditional style of the setting created an authentic ambiance! We loved our server and will definitely be back to visit!
They did not note this at the restaurant so I just let it go- husband birthday-
SPECTACULAR on every level! One of the best meals I've had!
The service was excellent. The food was fine. I thought the sushi was cut small but it was good. Atmosphere, service, and the food was good enough to make it worth going back if I was taking friends for sushi. Salad was solid, well above average. The miso soup was excellent - flavorful, with generous seaweed, scallions, and tofu. The sushi was good but again, small cuts. Given the size of the sushi, it was only a fair value.
We got the 11 course omakase meal as a birthday indulgence. Our meal was very expensive, but it was delicious! The service was wonderful and the restaurant was charming. It is the best sushi/sashimi in the city. Its prices are a little high, so it's a special occasion place.
Always the best experience here!!
Tried the eleven courses. It was amazing. Great experience!
Everything was perfect from start to finish!!
Just another exceptional evening. Grabbed some cocktails at Soba and then went up to UMI. The sushi lovers were very pleased with all of their various choices. I had a teriyaki steak which was also excellent. Very good and consistent food and service.
Service is always excellent; staff is incredibly courteous. Food is delicious and worth the price.
Have been here before - always enjoy it. Desserts come upstairs from Soba, which is closed on Mondays... so only one option. They had also run out of a few things on the menu. However, what we had was wonderful, so not a real complaint - I just wondered if they ran out of some things because they only have so much fresh fish of some type (which is a good thing - I don’t want un-fresh fish, and high demand means it’s popular) or for some other reason?
The food was good, but not exceptional and exceptional is what you would need to justify the price. It was our daughters birthday and she wanted sushi but it did not meet our expectations. Food was good, overall it was ho hum. It would be great if they have 2 bathrooms. The one shared bathroom was not very clean and didn’t work well. There is no desire to go back.
The best sushi place in Pittsburgh by far. No other place in the city comes even remotely close. On par with the best in NYC.
My wife and I came with our children to celebrate her birthday. We had the 7-course Omakase meal and our children (11 and 15) had the strip steak entrée. It was all delicious!
As always, Chef Shu came through with an exceptional Omakase menu. Unfortunately, the service was not on par with our $500 bill tonight. Did the management never think that the folks who ordered the expensive bottle of wine wanted the staff to pour it? At best, the staff was overworked, impersonal and seemingly uncaring. To be a truly exceptional restaurant, the service needs to equate to the high quality of the food. Burrito Brothers listen up -- a truly exceptional restaurant experience is a melding of good food AND good service. You need to focus on the latter, which is unfortunately absent from most of your restaurants.
Drinks and food we’re phenomenal! Danielle struck just the right balance of engaged but unobtrusive. Had a great celebration!
Unreal service and even better food.
The people next to us were on a first date and we could hear the entire conversation. Very annoying.
Favorite place in the city! Food is amazing as is the chef!
No question at all
Best Sushi In Pittsburgh
Wonderful! We love it every time we go! Manager very attentive.
It had been a while since we ate here. The sushi was very small and overpriced. My salmon dinner was over cooked and the salmon was very thin.
Very nice! Great quality and excellent service!
The absolute best sushi in Pittsburgh and I’d put it up against Sushi anywhere. Chef is top notch and service is incredible. In particular, Larry has been there for years and you won’t find a more knowledgeable and service oriented staff member.
Fabulous flavors of top shelf seafood. Try the chef's special plates if you don't mind an expensive meal (with drinks you'll hit $150 or above for two). The very best Unagi sushi possible and melt-in-your-mouth tuna. If you want to keep the cost down from adding plates and bites, the sushi plate and sashimi plate are delicious (clean, sleek, and straight-forward without having to find the food in boats and flowers). Always a high-end delicious meal with superior service in classy casual atmosphere.
The best sushi in Pittsburgh by an order of magnitude.
Always a stellar experience. Hands down, the best sushi in Pittsburgh.
Incredible food. Best restaurant in Pittsburgh. Highly recommend!
We didn't get to sit at a tatami while there were a couple of empty tatami tables the entire time. I put birthday in the occasion, but my friend did not get anything.
Service was exceptional and knowledgeable and friendly!
Food well all the above!!
