Loved the food here, all of the sushi was delicious and we had to order extra ice cream because we were so pleased the first time around. This was my first time at Umi, but definitely won't be my last!

Small sushi restaurant in a strip mall. Very empty when we arrived at 7:30. Fish was not very fresh- mushy.

3rd time at Umi. For Japanese and Sushi in the area, Umi is the best option. It's modern, clean, food and service are good. Some of the prices are high especially for the area - beef teriyaki for some reason at $19 is quite high. Tell me it's grass-fed and pasture raised, then we're in business. Some of the boxes could probably be shared by 2 so those would be a good value, as are the soups. Sushi is decent though not the best and some of the rolls have just too many frills (the only lobster option is smothered by 3 types of fruit.)
Mochi ice cream had freezer burn. It is my firm belief that if you can't send your best out of the kitchen, you apologize and tell the customer that it's not available. Don't serve it!

This was my second time at Umi. We were there on a Saturday shortly after opening at 4:30. The service was unbelievably slow; there seemed to be 2 servers for about 6 tables by the time we left (2-3 at the time we arrived.) Both of our servers came by infrequently; I had to get up to seek them out on more than 1 occasion. Our experience was lengthened by at least 30 minutes due to this. Our entrees did not take long, but the dessert (ice cream and mochi ice cream) took over 10 minutes. Service was very nice and friendly; just extremely slow and infrequent. The food is good, though the prices are a little high for the area. We shared 1 roll, 5 entrees, and 1 dessert and somehow that came out to $145, almost 30 per person. Seems high for what we had.

I went to Umi twice. The first time my friend suggested it to me, and we had rolls. The second time I brought a different friend with me and we had ramen noodles with pork belly, among other food. It was so amazing, it left me craving it for two days straight. I look forward to coming back tot Umi. It's one of those places you can confidently recommend to your friends.

Delicious, beautifully plated food and very friendly wait staff. Easy to get a table, it was slow on Saturday night at 6:30, which made for a very pleasant dining experience. A bit pricey, is my only complaint.

My girlfriend and I went here just for ramen. We got the warm moist towel treatment upon being seated and the waitress asked if we'd like anything to drink - we just had water. We ordered the tonkotsu ramen (2x) and an edamame appetizer. The app came quickly, and was as expected. The tonkotsu ramens came quickly after and were delicious. There were no mushrooms in this one, but it had bamboo and pickled ginger, which added a nice flavouring to the overall really good ramen. The noodles were a little more al dente than I like in ramen, but the portions were favourably sized and we were full. No dessert option - out goal was a good ramen soup and we had it. The place was a bit on the empty side, around 8:30pm on a Saturday night - but the interior is very nice, modern, and I would hope more people would go there because the service and location were great. They also have a front (shared) parking lot, which is great if you don't like paying the city for parking. I'd go again.

A little overpriced for the cooked food and some sushi items. I won't go back just because I can get same or better food for cheaper. But if you are in the neighborhood and within walking distance go for it!

I love Umi! The food is consistently good and the service is warm and friendly. The atmosphere is relaxed with a modern coolness. The appetizers, sushi, and entrees are prepared tastefully and are generous portions. To make things even better, they have now added liquor to their menu. I highly recommend this little northwest side gem!

I have eaten here on several occasions now, and I have to say that this is the best Japanese Restaurant I've eaten at in Chicago. The food is outstanding, especially the Teriyaki Chilean Sea Bass and any of the Makis (my favorite is the Rainbow). Behind the unassuming storefront near Irving Park and California lies a chic and modern, yet comfortable, space. Umi offers everything you would ever want in a great restaurant, including easy parking. It's also BYOB, so bring your favorite bottle of wine and have a fantastic and memorable experience at Umi!

I have been here many times, in fact I really enjoy this place, and clearly have enjoyed it time and time again. As usual the food and service was very good. I brought a co-worker for lunch to show off a new place for them to dine at. However, the restaurant felt as though I was sitting in a sauna ... not good when you're thinking sushi. I swear it was cooler outside, in the middle of July on a 90+ degree day, than it was inside. I'm hopeful that they have since fixed the situation so I can go back and enjoy a comfortable meal soon!

The service was friendly. Bought a groupon so got a lot of food. The sushi was honestly just okay though. Had the fiery tuna specialty roll and it got bland after awhile. The crunch maki was good. The gyoza was okay. My cousin had the sashimi set, so I don't know how that tasted.
