Umami Ratings and Reviews
This was our second time at Umami and we were disappointed. The service was inconsistent - our server was initially attentive but later, even as the restaurant cleared out, became hard to find. Our appetizer/salads appeared promptly but our main courses took forever to arrive, even though by then the place was only half full. Two of the three people in our party noted that their portions were smaller than expected, particularly the sides. And the other party's entree was way over-salted and inedible and was sent back. Even that was not without confusion as the wait staff didn't seem to understand that there was a problem. We were pleased that the replacement entree arrived fairly quickly and our primary waiter was very apologetic. The food was certainly good, but this visit was not nearly as special as our first a couple months ago - and we will probably not return or recommend.
While a little on the noisy side due it's tight confines, it's a very warm and energetic atmosphere. Service was very good, but it seemed like there were some odd delays at certain points in the order/serving process. And this is despite three different individuals having involvement with our table. The food at Umami is always very good, but it seems to me that something is missing to take it to that top level. The cream of mushroom soup lacked flavor intensity/zip, and the tofu entree did as well. The salmon was top notch, but the potatoes on the side a little rich and oily.
Loudness and semi-awkward environment is to be expected since you are sat with strangers at the same table. Not to the restaurants fault, there were screaming and crying kids that ruined a good portion of the time. The food tasted delicious but for some reason didn't sit well with the hubby and I which is unusual. Could be because the chicken was brought in late to be cooked since it was forgotten initially.
A rare night out and a Friday opening sent us flying to Umami. We were rewarded with brand new summer menu with a number of enticing options. Make sure you do not miss the Spicy Tofu. We were lucky to also score the special Duck Breast of the evening. We enjoyed a Smith & Hook Cabernet with a Blueberry Bourbon Crisp. It was delightful to catch up with Nicki and we are already looking forward to our next visit to our favorite restaurant.
We had the most delicious meal. Started with the special salad - incredibly fresh with a homemade dressing. We had a lovely Sauvignon blanc & halibut.
Amazing! The staff and service are so friendly and professional and make you feel so welcome.
We just had not made it to Umami due to being a little farther from our 'hood but after our meal I am going to make it there more often. It reminds me of small restaurants in Europe where the focus is on having a fine meal with outstanding service. Behind velvet curtains the magic is made. After seeing the same menu at noisy 'hip' restaurants in the Cleveland suburbs, Umami is a relief to enjoy a wonderful meal in a quiet atmosphere. My teenage son's loved the sashimi, udon noodles and duck; I had the beet salad (wonderful) and my husband had pork tenderloin which was perfect. We finished it off with blueberry rum crisp. We were sad that we could not try every dish, so we will be back.
The rice in our sushi appetizer was over cooked and gummy, but the halibut entree looked beautiful and tasted delicious. Our friends ordered the scallops and salmon entrees, which were also excellently prepared. The staff was very friendly, knew the menu very well, and the service was excellent. All in all a great meal.
Awful customer service....uninspired menu.
My fiance and I went on a Saturday night to celebrate her birthday. I had made reservations several weeks in advance and arrived on time only to find that no tables were available and we had to wait for 10 minutes. Since there is no bar, we had to wait outside. The hostess didn't apologize and didn't seem to care that they can't keep their reservation schedule tight. When we were finally seated, we were given a tiny window seat adjacent to the door with the sun directly in our face, where we were blinded and roasting. The waiter knew what was on the menu but didn't give accurate descriptions for most items seemed completely distracted and erratic. We settled on goat-cheese dumplings that were more like gnocchi (no goat cheese to be found) and their sashimi sampler. The dumplings were quite tasty, despite the fact that the goat cheese was minimal, and the array of soy-based sauces were good. The sashimi was excellent but we were charged the "market price" of $33 for only TWELVE pieces of fish. The rest of the limited menu was uninspiring, with a standard selection of beet salads, grilled salmon and hanger steak. I had high hopes, but will not be returning to Umami.
We have not dined there for awhile and we were very pleased to find the same fine service and great food that we had come to expect from before. We started with a spicy tuna roll then I had the Miso Soup and Udon Noodles. I don't know if it was faulty memory but the portions seemed slightly larger. My wife had the curry chicken. We had pondered heading to Jenni's up the street for dessert but were very glad we didn't because the pear ginger crisp was delicious
The menu was so interesting and there were multiple things I wanted to try! I ended up with the Goat Cheese dumplings to start, which were almost painfully oversalted. In contrast, I had the lambchops as an entree, which, though perfectly cooked, had no seasoning that I could discern - not even the baby bok choys or roasted potatoes. Odd, but I would absolutely give them a second chance. However, try not to sit facing the sunset if sitting in the front window - you'll go blind.
Had some concerns due to recent reviews which showed inconsistency in service and quality of the food. We went this past Saturday, June 3, we were very pleased with everything. The service and food was very good. The desserts were fabulous. A great night . Will definitely go back.
My first time to be at the restaurant. The place is surprisingly small, so is the distance between tables. The service was quite good, and the quality of food was okay. For the kind of marketing you see on ads, the ambiance does not live up the expectation.
I can't say enough good things about Umami. Everytime we come here it's consistently amazing. What always stands out to me is not only how delicious the food is, but how fun and on point the service is. The small staff never misses a beat! Be warned though, the place is tiny, can get a tad loud at times.
My wife and I have been fairly frequent visitors to Umami and overall have had very good experiences which is why we have kept going back. That being said, this past Saturday was a really off night and it will be awhile before we decide to go back, if ever. Apparently, the kitchen lost our order and there was a very long wait for the main courses. When they finally showed up, they brought my wife the wrong dish so there was another wait. While every restaurant has a off experience, Umami absolutely failed in taking ownership for the experience. The staff hid in the back. No one came to apologize. There was no effort to make things right. All they did was bring us the check and run away. When we got ready to leave, there wasn't a staff person in sight. This was absolutely one of the worst customer service experiences we've had at a restaurant. As a somewhat frequent visitor, it is not what we expected from Umami.
As always, Umami did us proud! We booked for my brother and sister in-law for a rare date/birthday night. They thoroughly enjoyed the food and mead, the atmosphere was perfect, and Nikki and the staff looked after them beautifully. They had a wonderful evening. Thank you!
