Great Japanese dining place in Chicago
Awesome as usual! Mexicana roll, Dragon Roll, Rainbow roll, Spicy Tuna, Spicy Salmon and a couple of Shiitake rolls. A bottle of Sake to wash it all down!😀. Desert was the Green Tea brûlée ! 😀😀😀
Friendly staff & delicious sushi & nice selection of beers.
Great food. Friendly and helpful servers. Highly recommend!
Excellent food. The best sushi and creative maki.
Love dining here :-) great food!
We dined before a 10 minute walk to the Auditorium Theater for a show.
We enjoyed a tempura plate with the most delicate dipping sauce, it was not overpowering at all. We ordered the Omakase Sushi and the seafood selections were just fantastic. From Octopus and Eel to baby salmon/mackeral, and a fantastic mushroom chowder, the meal was one of the best I've had. I would highly recommend this place, and look forward to attending again.
Waitstaff was very pleasant
Moderate price point
Our meal was excellent, and the Green Tea Creme Brulee was fantastic.
Great food selections, priced very reasonably and delicious!
Food was great and service was friendly.
Great meal all around. Will return to try more noodles. Spicy pork ramen was on point.
I made the mistake to order a traditional sashimi platter at a hipster place. I suspect that had I ordered some ramen and a California roll, I’d likely write a different review. But that’s not what I did.
I had the most sorry looking toro and the aji (Spanish mackerel) had the look, consistency, and flavor of dried rubber. The regular mackerel was overmarinated, tough, chewy, and dominant flavor from the cloying piercing sweetness of acesulfam-K. The albacore was a dried out brownish brick of no discernible flavor, were it not for the bonito flakes drizzled over them. The uni was serviceable and the amaebi was actually very good, albeit the heads should have been served fresh and then later served fried.
All of this came cramped on a plate, which didn’t help.
The spicy tuna and negi toro roll were both excellent.
Don’t order a sashimi platter unless you’re sitting at the sushi bar and can see the fish. Sticking to rolls here would probably leave you satisfied, albeit I would have preferred some daikon sprouts and yamagobo in my spicy tuna roll.
The service here was outstanding and the waitress explained all of the items to us. They made my daughters 8th birthday very special by surprising her with a special ice cream served with beautiful orchids on her plate.
Food is very good. Service is excellent.
Good atmosphere and service. I love shrimp tempuras and also veggies. Tempura batter was a little bit heavy for us. Lighter and crispy taste would be better.
Nice set-up! And sushi was good! The beef wrapped asparagus was delicious!!!!
This place is mediocre and non memorable sushi. Had to wait half hour to be seated despite having a reservation. The food was not bad but really nothing special for the hamachi don and sushi platters.
Umai Japanese Kitchen & Sushi is what we call a "no-fail" restaurant. We've taken friends here now for a couple of years, and the experience is always excellent.
Outstanding sushi, one of my favorite dinner spots. ❤️🍣🍜🍶
Great Ramen and katsu. Staffs were friendly and professional!
I had lunch with my boss here and dinner with my friends here before, good fit for both!
Overall good experience. Took a long time for our waitress to initially come by but otherwise service was prompt. As a vegetarian, I was thrilled to see they had a signature vegan maki separate from the standard veggie rolls. Unfortunately, it was not spectacular relative to other vegetarian signature rolls I've had. Furthermore, I ordered a sweet plum roll veggie roll and disliked it strongly. I acknowledge that was a risky choice to begin with, however (I'm very sick of cucumber/avocado or sweet potato and wanted to mix it up), and in hindsight I should have gone with something more traditional. The rest of the table did enjoy their sushi. Plating was superb and the atmosphere was genuine. The only downside is they did not excel in vegetarian sushi rolls. I would return with this knowledge and elect a different dish.
Place was awesome , food ,service fantastic. I almost spend that much for 2 people at Burger King.
Outstanding meal. Sukiyaki and ramen flavorful and soulful. Good sake and they also have a full bar. Really great and attentive service service. It was very good meal on a chilly CHICAGO day. Will definitely be back!
The reservation process was super easy. However, the restaurant is extremely small. There is no place to accommodate people waiting for tables and it forces people to wait right next to tables where guests are sitting enjoying their meals. It’s awkard to have this group of people standing next to you and staring at you while you eat. The hostess was sweet, but shouldn’t have been telling guests that they were just waiting for the paid customers to leave to seat them. I watched one woman walk over to a table and ask them how much longer they’d need to finish their drinks! Food was good and the price was right. I don’t recommend the Philadelphia roll in any form. Extremely bland. Service was ok. We were brought out a dish we didn’t order by the hostess. It took 15-20 mins to wave down a server to ask why we had it. They didn’t know and took it to another table who had ordered it. After it sat there untouched for 15-20 mins. Never got a drink refill either. Maybe a less busy time would be better, but service should be consistent no matter what. Won’t be running back any time soon, but not totally crossing it off since it’s a good price. If you can handled being packed into a small space where you can’t enjoy private conversations, have people standing around you while you eat, and no drink refills... this place is for you!
The food was good but the meat was a bit tough. This can be expected for a place that specializes in Sushi. The wine selection is limited, but my husband liked the variety of beers.
Small restaurant and very crowded and loud. Food was good. Prices were reasonable. Server was not real organized. Don’t order the green tea ice cream....yuck....but had to pay the $4 anyway. Ate 2 bites and left rest.
Unique experience but won’t go back.
Great restaurant, great food , friendly and patient waitress. Great Tonkatsu and sushi options.
Was a little disappointed in the spicy tuna roll but other than that everything was great
Food was great!
Excellent, fresh sushi and sashimi. The omakase sashimi was perfect, but the real star of the show was the spicy garlic ramen bowl. It was more or less perfect, and you couldn't beat it for the freezing winter day.
This is our go to place for celebrations, and also just if we’re in the mood to treat ourselves. The food is always consistently excellent, they have some very unique combinations, no MSG ever, and the service is impeccable.Highly recommend it, you won’t be disappointed.
Delicious and great service, thank you.
This is our go-to place. Never disappoints!
Great food great price
The food was excellent Everything was so fresh the spicy edamame was outstanding!! Everyone needs to try them
Best sushi and best service!
Nicely prepared and tasty Japanese food in a stylish modern setting with good service. I was surprised at how affordable it was. My only negative is that it is quite loud, so probably not good for intimate dinners. It is a fun casual place.
Finally got to try Umai. We had spicy garlic ramen, mushroom soup and maki rolls. All were excellent. Cool design, good food and service.
Sat at the bar and mostly at maki rolls which were excellent. Friendly, fast service.
