UMAI Japanese Kitchen & Sushi Ratings and Reviews
Just OK. The restaurant was finishing up lunch service so we were warned when we sat down. Standard Sushi + Izakaya fare. Everyone was served a bowl of miso to start - even the person having udon. The udon was the same you would get anywhere. Sysco must have a prepared udon they offer. I had an over cooked and under seasoned (sea salt) salmon shioyaki served oddly enough with broccoli and potatoes. Sashimi seemed fine. It's not a destination.
I was in town for a music festival and my girlfriend and I found this place on Google. It sounded great and turned out to be great! The quality of the food was high and the prices were reasonable. Everything I had I liked. The service was timely, friendly, and I was paid enough attention to. Would definitely go back again when in the area.
Chic, modern, and happening. This is not a sleepy place. As some noted, the noise level is higher than you might expect when you think of Japanese food. But this is intentional. This restaurant is modern. Food presentation is very good. Service was very attentive. Food was also very good. Great choice.
I picked this restaurant for a business meeting with one of my co workers who was new to sushi. The reviews seemed positive and they were spot on. The fish was very fresh and the chef really created works of art. Our server had some great recommendations on the menu and beer choices. It is not a quiet place so I would pick this spot for date just not a romantic one. But for a relaxed after work meeting spot or casual business dinner, this is a great choice.
I was by myself and feeling a little under the weather. I just wanted a hot cup of tea, a bowl of miso soup, and a yummy roll or two. I was not disappointed! The service was great, my server brought me two hot refills of tea, gratis, and that was, hands down, the best miso soup I have ever had. I'm also a spicy tuna roll snob, and there's did not disappoint. Lastly, I appreciate that they offer half-rolls of their fancier, more creative rolls. I had one with sirloin and chimichurri sauce on top that was fantastic!
The food was ok, nothing special.. but the worst thing was by the end of our dinner, there was our table and another one still eating, the restaurant kitchen staff turn on a vacuum cleaner, it was really loud.
They had closed already but I think you're not supposed to do that if you still have clients inside the restaurant. It was really unpleasant, not coming back..
We love this restaurant! The food is delicious and the vibe is very welcoming. The menu has a wonderful variety of dishes to choose from; all kinds of proteins (in case you don't eat fish!), lots of vegetables, many different preparations. The food is fresh, prepared beautifully and artfully presented. The waitstaff are always friendly and knowledgeable; the prices are very fair for the high quality and variety. We don't live nearby, but always make time to eat here when we're visiting Chicago.
Our dinner was great. We were visiting the area for the weekend and we love sushi. We normally always try one sushi restaurant on most of our travels. The rolls were really really good. We had the Chicago, Sloopin and Mexicana and they were great. Chicago and Sloopin were by far the best.
Service was good.
