'Ulu Ocean Grill and Sushi Lounge Ratings and Reviews
This is my first five star review top to bottom. I would never have guessed that with as expensive as the dinner was that I would also give it a five star on value. The truth is the food, ambiance and service were so over the top, it was worth every penny. The food obviously starts with amazing quality and is prepared with a finesse that produce exquisite flavors. The ambiance- well our table was 10 feet from breaking waves at sunset. And the service is intelligent, gracious and down right endearing. When on Island we live about 20 minutes away and we have decided this is going to be our local spot of choice.
Ulu Ocean Grill is phenomenal. From the moment we walked in until the moment we left, we were continually amazed at the level of detail that is put into serving the customer. We were celebrating big birthdays and were not disappointed. The food is locally sourced and the quality is exceptional. Great chef! Would highly recommend.
Disappointed with Ulu this time. We have always had great service & food here in the past. This time service was very off. It took 25 min. to get a drink & went downhill from there. Best thing about the evening was the view. Expected more for $300 + for party of 2. Not sure I would go back.
This is first class dining in the most relaxed setting. Gorgeous ocean views, friendly and personable as well as knowledgeable staff, and fantastic food! Loved the sake tasting trio, and the fish special of the day, Opa was delicious! Konpachi fish was also amazing. Great sushi also and dessert of soufflé was decadent yet not too heavy. Truly a memorable dining experience in Hawaii, and we highly recommend it. Relaxing and romantic environment .
As we walked through the beautiful grounds of the Four Seasons Resort, which were lined with tiki torches, the wind gusted erratically, blowing the fumes of the torches at us. It was arguably the worst thing I’ve ever smelled. By the time we got to the restaurant my husband was feeling ill, as he is very sensitive to smoke and exhaust fumes. The setting is beautiful, but I recommend going during the day to really enjoy the view. The food was okay and the service was outstanding. There may have been other options on the menu we would have enjoyed more. It’s a shame that Hawaiian businesses feel the need to pollute the air with tiki torches, but hey, it’s the Trump era; anything for big oil.
I can only say good things...Everything was awesome and what really made it special was they knew what gluten free was and is. We felt taken care of by our server. A few highlights were, gluten free bread for us and regular bread for my dad, calamari that we could all share (gluten free) and for some reason we all loved the coconut popcorn at the end! Yum yum
Absolutely the worst meal we ate on our recent visit to the Big Island. The fresh fish special was incredibly dry and not seasoned. My husband had the pork chop and pork belly and both were under-seasoned and dry. The tomato salad was nothing more than a couple bites of under-ripe un-seasoned grape tomatoes. All this at extremely high resort prices. Would never eat here again.
We celebrated our wedding at Ulu, and had a beautiful night. Everyone from the hostess to the servers provided exceptional service and went out of their way to make us feel special! The food was amazing, too. I highly recommend the fresh fish, tempura rolls, chocolate soufflé and custom cocktails. You really can’t go wrong with anything on the menu.
We were celebrating a special occasion. We had a beautiful ocean front table but that was the only thing special about the meal. The waiter seemed to be in a rush to take our order, then forgot the bread service until after the appetizer course when we had to ask for it. The food was so-so. The dessert menu was not at all appealing. We have been dining here every year for 20 years, and the restaurant has been much better in terms of menu selections, food quality and service in the past. I would strongly recommend dining at the Beach Tree if you choose to dine at the Four Seasons. The Beach Tree is far superior to Ulu in every way.
I booked a surprise dinner for my boyfriend for our anniversary while visiting Kona. This restaurant was AMAZING. The service was top notch and the food was equally amazing. There is a parking lot for those not staying in the hotel as well as signs to help find it. The view is gorgeous as well as the overall restaurant being beautiful. The food is expensive, but for an amazing dining experience. I highly recommend this place.
We ate twice at this restaurant during our week at the Hualalai Four Seasons. Service was average. Our waitress the first visit was definitely better than the waiter on our second. He was ok to start with but seemed to “lose interest “ after a larger table arrived and a two young couples. Maybe he was not so so keen on older people 🙄. He never asked about subsequent glasses of wine or how our dinners were and I felt he sort of tossed my second glass of wine onto the table. The food was ok but not brilliant as I would think it should be for the price. We had two special sushi rolls that were honestly rather a mess. Way too friable and although covered with numerous “toppings” were not that flavorful. We had a steak that was very good and well prepared. Also the ahi poke was good.
My husband and I celebrated our honeymoon on the Big Island and book-ended our trip with reservations at Ulu. I mentioned that we were celebrating something and the table reserved for us was right along the water! We listened to the waves and watched the sun set. Any other table would have been nice but this make us feel so special! We had many exciting things planed and wanted our last night on the island to be special, romantic and with food we love. Ulu was the perfect end to a perfect honeymoon!
Ulu dining experience was outstanding on our honeymoon to the Big Island. The sake tasting was a good way to start the meal and a great value. The octopus appetizer was tasty but a bit over cooked to our taste. Lobster entree was cooked to perfection and very creative. The s’mores dessert one word....Yum! Finished off the meal with 2 glasses of Port to end this very enjoyable dining experience.
Service was impeccable to start. As the meal continued, less so. Found ourselves asking and waiting. Ambiance and presentation was immaculate however. Our selections were flavorful but were terribly over-salted, every last entree. The octopus app was a fail. Greek preparations surpass this all day. Ours was chewy, over charred, over cooked. My seabass was tasty albeit over salted as well. Overall an expensive meal which you expect at the Four Seasons, however the food fell short over all. Beautiful grounds and gorgeous restaurant. Hopefully just an off evening for the chef.
We went here on a Thursday night for dinner for our 15th wedding anniversary and it was absolutely amazing! We had a table right by the water and watched the sunset over the Pacific Ocean. Our server Steve was great and knowledgeable about the menu items and he was spot on for his recommendations for the food items. My wife gave me a perfect 100 for picking this place, and believe me, she is a tough grader. It's the most romantic restaurant which we have dined at so far.
Ulu Ocean Grill strives to hit all the marks for a top tier restaurant. Our waiter Chad is as good as it gets for service. Food is tasty and some creative use of spices and cooking techniques made it good. We did wait almost 30 minutes for our appetizers and the portions were a bit on the small side which would be acceptable if not for the top tier prices. Paying $400 for 3 people you expect everything to be on point.
Oustanding in every way - so much so, that we dined twice within a matter of days, and on both occasions enjoyed a fabulous French Burgundy, creative dishes, attentive service and glorious sunsets. It doesn't get any better, and we look forward to returning next time we're back on the Big Island.
