The sushi was great and reasonably priced. Service was a bit slow but it was a packed house, so understandable!
We found Ukai Sushi while looking for a restaurant near to the Theater Building on Belmont. We went for a pre-theatre dinner. The sushi was very fresh. My husband had pork ramen which also was very good. Service was quick and attentive. They have a number of creatively constructed rolls but I didn't sample any of them. I thought the quality of the fish was better than that of a number of small neighborhood sushi restaurants.
For a reservation I expected a nice table. We got a table at the end of the hallway near the bathrooms. I was disappointed
Great sushi, BYOB
Didn’t know it’s a
Horrible service..... was their over 2 hours only for an app and 2 rolls.....ordered 2 more... never came.... I love this place I guess just a bad day.....
Sushi was excellent. Dinner entrees were not as good as most Japanese places. Food was fairly priced, but there was a bit of a language barrier with the server. She had a difficult time answering our questions about the food.
Excellent before or after theater restaurant! Many healthy and delicious options!
Byob... enough said! Cubs roll is my favorite sushi roll ever, and the miso soup is unlike anywhere else
My boyfriend and I went here for a date and had a wonderful time. The ambiance is quite pleasing and great for a romantic evening. We stopped by the liquor store and grabbed some Sapporo to take advantage of their BYOB accommodation. We were especially happy with the sashimi, as the pieces of fish were delicious. They were the largest pieces of sashimi we have every had, but were scrumptious. We will definitely come back for a date night in the near future.
The only issue was all though they had plenty of open tables they sat us smack in the middle of 2 other couples and it was impossible to talk without your neighbor hearing every word you say. Other than that, great food and our server was super sweet and polite. The service there is always friendly and good. The food is always amazing and byob. One of my favorite places in lakeview.
Great meal, really fun creative rolls and very tasty. Service was a touch slow but friendly. They did forget to check me in for my reservation though.
I've been here multiple times but this past time the restaurant was really warm and the sushi came out warm. All of us who went did not feel well the next day so I'm sad that one of my fave sushi spots now how me feeling sick!
The sushi was terrific and service very prompt and attentive. Only downside was the lighting - SO dark where we were sitting we had to break out out phone flashlights.
I celebrated my bday here w 7 other girlfriends. Our table was ready, even though we were running a bit late. Everyone was very welcoming and pleasant. The lights were dimmed enough, very romantic place for a date, and obviously perfect for a celebration as well! Byob, excellent. The food was fantastic!! I did order the tofu in a broth (I don't remember the name) it was not good at all. There was no flavor. Overall, I will be going back! Thank you for having us!
We went with a party of 10. The food was absolutely delicious and the atmosphere was casual. I will definitely go back!
Was surprised I had not heard of this place sooner. Great little BYOB sushi place and the value is great!
This is my favorite sushi place in chicago. Great quality for a great price!
Service was really good at the beginning but once it got busy it took me 15 min to get a glass of water. Food was pretty good. Sushi is very americanized with lots of Mayo. Delicious though. BYOB
Food made both of us sick
The food was amazing! BYOB was great because we got to bring a nice bottle of wine. However, after only 55 minutes we were asked kindly to leave because "there was a reservation coming". We made a reservation ourselves which means they don't expect anyone to stay longer than an hour. We still had wine and no one was waiting so it was upsetting. The food was great but the hospitality was more than lackluster
A great go-to byob neighborhood sushi spot. Love the Cubs and Hawks rolls.
Been here several times, always delicious and friendly staff. Tuna tataki, chicken gyoza are great staples. Sushi is excellent
Though the service was very friendly, it was a little haphazard; I felt a little neglected at times, though overall it was OK. The sushi was really good; excellent super-fresh fish, large pieces, nicely presented.
Everything (sushi dishes in various styles) was good EXCEPT the noodles dish, terrible. Do not order noodles dishes.
Sushi and miso soup were great. Duck buns awful.
We got there after a show, a couple of blocks away, and were only 10 minutes late from our reservation time. They told us we had to order in 5 minutes or we would have to leave... So we were only able to see just a small part of the menu and order from there. The chicken was dry and chewy, the spicy tuna sushi was all mushed up, not very fresh... but the other sushi was good. The miso soup had items that don't belong in a miso soup... Very frustrating for a big fan of Japanese food!
We felt very rushed throughout the whole dinner (that probably lasted 30 minutes), and for a Saturday night in Chicago, in a very busy area from all the theaters and show venues, it was definitely a bummer. And they didn't even acknowledge our reservation in Open Table, so not even the points for us! Not going to recommend, not going back either.
I love love love this place
Fast and reliable service. We told our server we were in a rush and they took great care of us! They had gluten-free options to accommodate the other guest and where quickly able to tell us which rolls would be the quickest. The food is good and while the selection is not as large as some other restaurants, they are good at what they have. This restaurant is also BYOB
We went here based on overall good reviews and a high star rating, but it left a lot to be desired. The restaurant was mostly empty - not unexpected on a Tuesday night, except that the neighborhood was hopping. Upon entering, I noticed an odd smell - not terrible, but a little off. The food was ok - nothing spectacular but not the worst sushi I have had. The really bad part was how shabby the place is. The women's bathroom barely had running water - a trickle at best and the plumbing was basically broken. When I went to turn off the light, I noticed the 15 layers of grime on the light switch. Just gross. The rest of the place was a bit messy and run down as well. Not my favorite and I won't be back.
Despite repeated requests from us for a different table, we were forced to sit at a small table in darkness for 2 hours when there were plenty of better lit empty tables available the whole time. The food is okie.
Good service, great food
We dined here before a concert at Wrigley. We let the waiter know we were in somewhat of a hurry. The service was very slow. Non-alcoholic drinks were $3 each and refills weren't ever brought. The food was ok. The sushi eaters said only the Philadelphia roll was very good. The teriyaki eaters thought their meals were adequate, but not impressive. The location was convenient, but I wouldn't make a special trip to go back.
Went here on a small little date night with my girlfriend on a Friday night (made 7:30 PM reservations) We were seated promptly and the server would stop by frequently to see if we needed anything, but was never overbearing. We ended up bringing two bottles of red wine, no corking fee is nice, and ordered 4 rolls of sushi (Pink lady, Bulls, Blackhawks, Alaskan) all of which were pretty great and we were able to substitute brown rice for a reasonable surcharge. Overall we had a great dinner, it got a little noisy at times but that was expected on a friday night. Great food, Great value, easy location a few steps from the red line stop at belmont. Will definitely return.
This was my third time at Ukai and it is still one of my favorite sushi spots in the city. Love the menu options, great food, and fun atmosphere. I will definitely be back again.
Really great sushi, I think I like it more than my usual spot in NC. Too bad it's 800 miles from home!
Amazing sushi. Unless you get a specialty roll, the rolls are smaller (4-5 pieces) but so delicious. The red scorpion, Hawks, fire dragon, Godzilla no team cheese, spicy tuna with added crunch, Sakura, pink lady were SO good! Really nice ambiance too.
A $40 sashimi dinner was very disappointing
The portions of other orders are small
