Chicagoans in search of a unique BYOB dining experience have found their new destination at Ukai Japanese Restaurant.
Executive Chef Paul Chant, is the mastermind of the small tapas plates appearing from Ukai's hot kitchen. With influences from around the globe, Chant has constructed an eclectic array of plates such as an Heirloom tomato Salad with fresh mozzerella, capers, olives and dates with a homemade pesto; deconstructed Mushuu Duck buns with sous vide duck breast, cucumber caviar and cherry-port reduction; and seared Hanger Steak with roasted bell peppers, fried okra and crispy onion rings.
Behind the steel and bamboo clad sushi bar, Chef and Co-Owner Choong J. shines with an array of fresh fish, delivered daily to the new northside restaurant. A selection of specialty maki rolls "dedicated to all Chicago sports fans" showcases rolls such as the Cubs Roll with fresh mozzerella, avocado, unagi and shrimp tempura, lightly fired in a tempura batter.

The only issue was all though they had plenty of open tables they sat us smack in the middle of 2 other couples and it was impossible to talk without your neighbor hearing every word you say. Other than that, great food and our server was super sweet and polite. The service there is always friendly and good. The food is always amazing and byob. One of my favorite places in lakeview.
I celebrated my bday here w 7 other girlfriends. Our table was ready, even though we were running a bit late. Everyone was very welcoming and pleasant. The lights were dimmed enough, very romantic place for a date, and obviously perfect for a celebration as well! Byob, excellent. The food was fantastic!! I did order the tofu in a broth (I don't remember the name) it was not good at all. There was no flavor. Overall, I will be going back! Thank you for having us!
The food was amazing! BYOB was great because we got to bring a nice bottle of wine. However, after only 55 minutes we were asked kindly to leave because "there was a reservation coming". We made a reservation ourselves which means they don't expect anyone to stay longer than an hour. We still had wine and no one was waiting so it was upsetting. The food was great but the hospitality was more than lackluster
We got there after a show, a couple of blocks away, and were only 10 minutes late from our reservation time. They told us we had to order in 5 minutes or we would have to leave... So we were only able to see just a small part of the menu and order from there. The chicken was dry and chewy, the spicy tuna sushi was all mushed up, not very fresh... but the other sushi was good. The miso soup had items that don't belong in a miso soup... Very frustrating for a big fan of Japanese food!
We felt very rushed throughout the whole dinner (that probably lasted 30 minutes), and for a Saturday night in Chicago, in a very busy area from all the theaters and show venues, it was definitely a bummer. And they didn't even acknowledge our reservation in Open Table, so not even the points for us! Not going to recommend, not going back either.
Fast and reliable service. We told our server we were in a rush and they took great care of us! They had gluten-free options to accommodate the other guest and where quickly able to tell us which rolls would be the quickest. The food is good and while the selection is not as large as some other restaurants, they are good at what they have. This restaurant is also BYOB
We went here based on overall good reviews and a high star rating, but it left a lot to be desired. The restaurant was mostly empty - not unexpected on a Tuesday night, except that the neighborhood was hopping. Upon entering, I noticed an odd smell - not terrible, but a little off. The food was ok - nothing spectacular but not the worst sushi I have had. The really bad part was how shabby the place is. The women's bathroom barely had running water - a trickle at best and the plumbing was basically broken. When I went to turn off the light, I noticed the 15 layers of grime on the light switch. Just gross. The rest of the place was a bit messy and run down as well. Not my favorite and I won't be back.
We dined here before a concert at Wrigley. We let the waiter know we were in somewhat of a hurry. The service was very slow. Non-alcoholic drinks were $3 each and refills weren't ever brought. The food was ok. The sushi eaters said only the Philadelphia roll was very good. The teriyaki eaters thought their meals were adequate, but not impressive. The location was convenient, but I wouldn't make a special trip to go back.
Went here on a small little date night with my girlfriend on a Friday night (made 7:30 PM reservations) We were seated promptly and the server would stop by frequently to see if we needed anything, but was never overbearing. We ended up bringing two bottles of red wine, no corking fee is nice, and ordered 4 rolls of sushi (Pink lady, Bulls, Blackhawks, Alaskan) all of which were pretty great and we were able to substitute brown rice for a reasonable surcharge. Overall we had a great dinner, it got a little noisy at times but that was expected on a friday night. Great food, Great value, easy location a few steps from the red line stop at belmont. Will definitely return.
Not that great. The fish tasted a bit chewy and I swear they watered down the soy sauce! It looked like I poured tea into my dish - it gave no flavor to the fish at all. Which, with really quality sushi wouldn't have bothered me, but these rolls were only so-so. The salmon nagiri was very good, however. Servers were very nice and attentive. There was a group of extremely loud early 20's kids next to us, which killed the vibe, but not a fault of the restaurants.
We went here because we've heard good things about their sushi rolls and they are a BYOB restaurant. When we arrived at the restaurant, we had to wait about 20 minutes even though we had a reservation. The staff was slow to wait on us at first but once we ordered they were pretty good.
