Chef Tyson Cole, winner of the 2011 James Beard Foundation Award for Best Chef Southwest--Thank you Uchi and Uchiko family and friends for your support!
Uchi showcases the culinary talents of executive chef and sushi master Tyson Cole, winner of the "best new chef in America 2005" by Food and Wine magazine. His exciting menu expands on the Japanese tradition with new flavors and influences. Uchi means "house," and like many sushi bars in Japan, Uchi is located in a refurbished old home. Its vibrant design adds a fresh dimension to the neighborhood and has been warmly received by Austin's diverse dining crowd.
Uchi accepts a very limited number of reservations and reserves the majority of the dining room for walk-in availability. Most seating is done on a first-come, first-serve basis. All parties must be complete before being seated.
Best service and food. Was a bit hard to hear my partner from across the table, but we made it work.
Love the attention Uchi pays to allergies and gluten free needs. We enjoyed our meal and had great service. It’s a bit pricey but worth it for a splurge meal!
The service was terrible. Our server didn’t care about us in the slightest and only attempted to see if we were okay when we decided to cancel our last course and get the check. The food was coursed out so poorly. We would be served a small portion of food and would wait up to 15-20 minutes for the next course. Imagine getting a plate with two pieces of salmon roe sushi, finishing the dish in 30 seconds and waiting 20 minutes to get the next dish. If this is how they regularly course out dishes I am shocked they have been in business for as long as they have been.
By the end we were visibly frustrated and we were not the only table in our section that was annoyed. I’m surprised no one came up to us to apologize for delay. Honestly if some one did apologize for the delay I don’t think my partner and I would be so upset with the experience.
I always try and give people in the service industry the benefit of the doubt, especially during service on a Saturday night. But this was truly disappointing.
Fantastic service and food. My wife and I ordered the vegetarian/vegan tasting menu which came with 7 courses and a dessert (designed for two people). We never waited more than a few minutes after finishing one course for the next one to be delivered. Everything was delicious and the staff was very knowledgeable and accommodating. It is pricey, but definitely a great date night experience when visiting Austin.
Very helpful waitress, explaining dishes and helpful recommendations
Uchi always impresses and we had a great anniversary dinner.
I had an absolutely amazing time! My server was personable, knowledgeable about the menu, gave amazing suggestions, and truly amplified the entire meal. I love Uchi! I will continue returning knowing that each time is such an incredible experience and not just a meal.
Tonight was, as (almost always) perfect. It’s the place that I pick for special occasions because it’s so damn reliably awesome. We sometimes go on random Mondays because it’s it a deliciously decadent treat. Amazing bites. Let your server help curate the meal within your taste levels - they know what’s fantastic!
Normally I would recommend and have been there several times in the past however on this specific occasion the server was not engaging or friendly. She didn’t try to up sell at all and didn’t attempt any small talk at all. Not the type of service I have come to expect at UCHI. The happy hour food was subpar. Fish was mushy, “pancakes” were more like lentil cakes and the food curry dish was uninspiring. We finally ordered seafood from the regular menu that was better suited to our tastes. Wines and sake were nicely chilled and the ambiance as always was wonderful. Maybe the head chef was on vacation...
It was good food!
Stephanie and George were amazing, as was the food- delicious!
The food was expensive and portions were incredibly small
By far the best sushi we've ever had. We thoroughly enjoyed the tasting menu put together for us by the chef and our lovely server, Melissa. She's the best! The setting is absolutely lovely, even the little fire heaters outside!!! Will be back if/when we return to Austin!
One of the best restaurants IMO. Always great food and service.
This was our 2nd time to visit and every dish still blew us away.
Once again, Uchi knocks it out of the park. Good to know that even after all this time (15 + years?) Uchi still delivers.
Service and food continue to be outstanding.
Good food and service. Noise level was extremely high. I would asked to be moved if sitting at a 2-top between 2 large party tables.
Always a favorite! ❤️
Uchi is not only my favorite restaurant in Austin, TX, it’s in my top 5 restaurants ever. If you love fresh food, sushi, service, creativity, excellent customer service, & good vibes book now. You will not regret it.
We love Uchi! We drove in from San Antonio for a great night out and Uchi delivered. We sat at the bar and were served by Naiomi (sorry if I got that wrong) and she was awesome! We let her lead the way and just serve us some of her favs and there wasn’t a single thing we didn’t like. Definitely worth the trip :)
Tasting menu was unbelievable. Every bite was amazing and the price was also fantastic.
We had the chef’s tasting menu as a special treat for my husband’s birthday. We’ve had some incredible Omakase experiences in the past, so we were excited to try what Uchi had in store. Unfortunately we were really underwhelmed. While almost every course featured a different fish, the flavor profile was basically the same. Our server was extremely attentive and quickly noticed the dishes we were particularly disappointed with and replaced them with new options. He was also gracious enough to gift us with Uni and Otoro nigiri as a birthday bonus. Overall an enjoyable dining experience, but may order directly from the menu if we were to return.
One of the best meals we have ever had! Get the chef’s tasting with sake pairing. Kind of like the Le Bernadin of sushi! Highly recommend. Already dreaming of going back.
Food took forever and wasn’t paced well. Quality of food was disappointing compared to all other visits. :(
Outstanding. Heather our server was fantastic as was the bartender Nicolette. Food a gastronomical profundity!!! Thank you.
My boyfriend and I decided to splurge on a romantic dinner during our short trip in Austin, and Uchi exceed all our expectations. We honestly were expecting to walk out of there having paid for overpriced food and service, but this experience was worth every penny, and we would definitely visit Uchi again, even with family! Noel was our server for the night, and he was absolutely fantastic; after learning this was our first time dining in Uchi, he went above and beyond to describe the menu in a detailed yet succinct manner, and all his recommendations were delicious. When we decide to dine in Uchi again, we will most definitely request Noel if we can, and we could recommend him to anyone!
Great food and great service!
We go to Uchi once or twice a year for special date nights. It sometimes takes a reservation a couple of weeks in advance, and it’s well worth it! The food and service are always top notch and the menu changes frequently.
Is the best food in Austin, TX 😍
Wonderful as always!
Very cool special date spot, it's constantly booked out so make sure to make a reservation in advance. It was worth the effort though and while I enjoyed the meal and would go back, what you pay for is the experience and quality of the food not the quantity - the sushi rolls and sashimi were tinier than what you see in most places (including Japan) but I don't think you'll mind ordering more to eat to your satisfaction as it's quite good.
The best restaurant we’ve ever been to! We ordered the chef special and each course was fantastic! They all complimented each other so well and the staff was fantastic. I highly recommend this restaurant.
Fantastic restaurant. We had two vegans and two meat eaters and all four of us had fantastic meals. Every dish we ordered was perfect and the service was great - would definitely return next time I'm in Austin and have already recommended to a few friends!
We loved our server Melissa! She was great. The food was incredible.
Uchi was the most creative sushi restaurant we've ever enjoyed. Both the food and service were outstanding, and the timing of the plates was perfect. We had a drink at the bar while waiting for our table, and the bartender, Nicolette, was very personable. When we asked about her favorite dishes, she produced a menu and marked several suggestions. Her recommendations were spot on! Our waiter, Felipe, was excellent; he had a great personality, and he made dining at Uchi a pleasure. We enjoyed everything we ate, and we especially loved the negitoro maki, the spicy crunch tuna, and the sea bream sushi. If you go, you won't be disappointed!
Returned to Uchi for our anniversary and it didn't disappoint. Never had a bad bite there. After all these years, I believe it's still the best restaurant in Austin.
Good price and excellent food.
Unbelievable food. My girlfriend and I celebrated one year together at Uchi. The food was amazing and service was perfect. Thank you for making our night special.
Uchi has gone downhill. The walu walu is still amazing, but the sushi (fish and rice) are completely cold. Real sushi should be served at room temperature, not be fresh out of the fridge. Will stick to Uchiko or Soto down the street. Not worth it.
