Uchi - Houston Ratings and Reviews
This place was absolutely amazing and worth the trip. I would recommend this to everyone. You will find some very unique items on the menu along with the traditional sushi nigiri and sashimi options. I was most impressed with the use of foie gras in are the feature of a nigiri sushi piece at a reasonable price. We did get a bit of a show sitting at the sushi bar, and it was very special to get the level of service we had from Young and Patrick. A wonderful time and experience overall which again I give the highest recommendations for interested gastronomy enthusiasts and casual dinners.
My original review was over the limit so a lot of this is condensed.
Went to for an anniversary with my girlfriend. She's vegetarian and I am not. We were excited to try the omakase. However was no split option, there's each option is for two. Luckily our server Jose was very helpful and made a custom omakase for us.
Our first split meals were the Hirame usuzukuri for me and the Kinoko usuzukuri. They were like the mirrored versions of the same dish except hers was vegetarian. Bright clean flavors to start off
Next was machi cure for me. The awesome part was that Jose picked the vegetarian version for my girlfriend which was the veggie cure. This dish was the one where we basically realized this was not your normal food affair. The flavors were perfectly balanced. There was some salty, some sweet. Not only that but the textures were also great contrasts with the crispy and the soft. It was just everything a complex dish should be.
This next one was where we diverged for a bit. She had the veggie mushi while I had the walu walu. I love escolar sushi and have never had it cooked. I definitely tasted the same flavor I did in the fish as sushi but the combination with the bright yuzupon, sweet/bitter candied citrus and crunchy salty myoga just put it over the top for me. Each component was great but when combined it was this delightful mix of flavors in my mouth.
The final tasting we had was the kinoko nabe for me and the veggie nabe . Again the whole mirrored experience in terms of food.
Finally we had to have fried milk for dessert after so many suggestions. And it followed suit with the whole balanced complex dish. The sweet and bitter with a touch of salty somewhere and the crunchy and soft. Perfect end.
Overall, would definitely come back. The plates were just so complex and it was an experience. I think anyone who says to avoid due to portion sizes probably missed the mark and ordered small dishes thinking they were main dishes. I think the omakase helps
We are South African's who love sushi as we are very spoilt in Cape Town. This has been the best sushi we have eaten since moving to Houston. We are always trying new spots but we will be back. Our server, Victoria was brilliant!
Our favourite dish was the Sakana Mushi (fish dish) as well as the Sake Namida (sushi roll). For the dessert! WOW! The fried milk dish is spectacular.
If you are interested in gluten free options, there are many.
Uchi was always a unique / special
experience to us. Now the presentation is very nice, however, it was average, the food was very good, however it’s lost it wow factor, the service is still great however not above and beyond. The prices appear to have corn down a little so maybe catering to a bigger audience / however there is a lot of completion there. I liked Uchi Sat however there are a lot
As usual, dining at Uchi's was a great experience! Excellent food and excellent service although there was a bit more than normal time before our order was taken and we were served anything, drinks or otherwise. We could always find out what we wanted to know from the staff around us.
Magnificent experience. The only hitch was a slight wait for our reserved table, but given the leisurely pace of our own dinner, the wait was tolerable. Our server did a masterful job of helping us choose several dishes for a balanced dining experience. Our favorites were the tempura pumpkin, Spanish octopus special and hot rock wagyu beef. It would be a sin to skip the fried milk for dessert, so plan for it. I love the attention to detail in each dish and the surprising flavor combinations. The chef impresses without being too exotic or showy for the sake of being showy (unlike some other Houston fine dining establishments). While we’ve experienced the “signature tasting” in the past, I was delighted by the choices we made with our own instincts and guidance from our seasoned server. Bravo, Uchi!
Great food and great staff. I have been countless times, and have always had the best service and consistently spectacular food. Everyone that works there is beyond friendly and knowledgeable about everything the restaurant has to offer. The sushi is the best I've ever had, and the non-sushi dishes are unique, creative and absolutely delicious. My favorite place in Houston.
