Typhoon is an exotic restaurant that specializes in a variety of Pan-Asian cuisine. The restaurant is conveniently located near the Santa Monica Airport. Its dining area is designed with large windows so guests can have a view of the planes while they dine. The restaurant also hosts frequent live entertainment. Typhoon has been serving the area for more than two decades.
Stop in for lunch and enjoy one of the restaurant's famous bowl meals served with white or brown rice. Options include dishes like the poke bowl with ahi tuna, lettuce, avocado, palm hearts, wonton chips and siracha mayonnaise and the Filipino pork bowl with stir fried eggplant, vinegar and garlic. Dinner options at Typhoon include dishes like Thai chicken or shrimp satay, crab dumplings, pork gyoza and Filipino fried squid.
We will miss coming to Typhoon. Thanks for everything!
I feel like I got ripped off for having the consideration to visit this restaurant during its last days. The food was OK but the service was terrible. Entrees came out first. Appetizers dribbled out over the next 2 hours at a glacial pace until we just decided to give up. One of my friends was so incensed he just walked out.
The right thing to do would have been to offer a discount. A sorry for your trouble. We had problems tonight. Nothing. No consideration. Perhaps it's best that this place is going out of business
This historic iconic landmark at the Santa Monica Airport will be closing on 11.8.16 due to the City of Santa Monica running tenants off the airport. We have enjoyed this restaurant for years and yesterday was no exception. The food was very tasty, the service attentive and the view enjoyable. It is a shame private pilots will not have this restaurant to enjoy after tomorrow.
A wonderful place to have a great dinner, a glass of good wine, and watch airplanes takeoff and land.
Great place to view take off and landing of small aircraft! Music good when available but please replace the dirty worn curtains with plastic bags tied around them and remove the dirty strips of cloth hanging from the ceiling as you go to restroom area. Even if you can't afford new replacements toss the old worn out eye sores...
I hesitate to recommend as is otherwise love the location, view, music and menu!
The restaurant is closing its doors on November 8, 2016. Too bad that the Santa Monica government has succeeded in driving out yet another business from the Santa Monica airport. Typhoon is a unique institution that will be missed.
Food was good, but it took forever for me to get my order,
The quality of the food and the entertainment were great. A fun environment! It turned out the waiter forgot to put in our order. We patiently waited for over 30 mins for our appetizers (oyster shooters & squid) before calling him over. Finally received oysters on the half shell only, w/ the squid being served with the meal. We had ordered string beans to come with the meal which he never served. I cancelled them when we were half way through our main course. Our waters were also never refilled during the two and a half hours that we dined. Looking on the bright side we did enjoy the Beatunes and the delicious food that we DID receive. Just request a different server if you end up with Carlos as I now regret leaving the tip that I did. He certainly did NOT earn it.
One of my favorites. Sorry to see it's closing soon.
We've been coming to Typhoon's for many years now but haven't been in a while and were a little excited about reacquainting ourselves with one of our favorite eateries. Sadly, we were very disappointed with the changes to the menu, presentation of familiar dishes and the taste of the food had declined. Typhoon's is in a great location and is ideal for dinner and drinks with a date or with friends, lm sorry to say no one in our party of 4 will be back. On a good note, our servers Lupe and Filemone, were both attentive and a pleasure to have around. They really made a disappointing evening with friends a lot better.
We go to Typhoon regularly and will continue to do so. Best features: really good food (we love the whole fried catfish), quiet enough to talk, good view of SM airport planes taking off and landing. Plus a good sunset.
Love the view from the main dining room. The restaurant is closing after Nov8, so if you've been contemplating trying this place, better hurry. Food is good, servers are attentive. Live music some nights. This place will be missed.
Eye level with Santa Monica airport runway. Watch the sun set and small planes landing and taking off. Cozy interior. Local people. Reasonable noise level. Fusion Asian food that sometimes works and sometimes not: e.g. Burmese Tea Salad is not at all Burmese and a rip off. Fun experience, though, and good service.
The Charles Owens orchestra was amazing . The venue had a very friendlystaff and a very unique menu.
Very nice romantic family friendly place to hang out and have delicious meal
I have been coming to typhoon for years and now bring my family as well
The cat fish, garlic rice and the shrimp in black bean sauce is my favorite
Keep up the good work
On this visit, we tried Typhoon's Thai-style coconut-curry chicken, shrimp satay, garlic rice and curry deviled eggs. All excellent. With its expansive view of the Santa Monica Mountains and shoreline, plus reliably tasty cuisine, Typhoon remains one of our favorite spots to enjoy a summer evening.
A favorite for years! Looking forward to returning.
What happened to this place? It used to be one of my go-to favorites--the perfect meeting spot since it's close to the 10 freeway. Dined there a few nights ago and was so disappointed. Instead of the wonderful runway-and sunset-view room on the second floor, we were seated upstairs, in the somehow claustrophobic, non-romantic space that used to be The Hump sushi bar, and the main room seemed to just be for cocktails. The food is still good, but the ambience has gotten really weird! :(
Good food, good friends with Great music by Tom Nolan Band = Perfect combination. Definitely will be back & tell friends!
The food was good (I had Sashimi, the others had Chinese). But we were mostly there to hear "Psych" the unexpected big bandf. They were greatllllllll
Typhoon always has some unique specials on the menu and we find it's never difficult to choose share items that everyone loves.
Since it is right on the runway of Santa Monica Airport, it alway makes for an easy place to take the kids when we have out of town guests and are looking for quality dining and a place where the kids won't get bored.
The space itself is well planned and nicely designed, and the high ceilings help with the acoustics; it's a restaurants that I can take my hard of hearing parents to and we can actually have a conversation where everyone can hear!
Whole deep fried catfish was delicious.
Great happy hour menu. Wonderful to sit by the window and watch the planes at Santa Monica airport.
Had an amazing musical experience when Emil Richards Big Band was playing. I was blown away, the quality of the music was excellent, best in LA. Food was excellent. Wine list could be better, nothing great on the list.
The food was ok, nothing special....it was worth the experience mainly for watching the planes land and take off. Menu completely different than whats posted at Open table and they didn't really care about it.... anyways, it was worth to go once, but probably not going back!
I've been going to Typhoon for more years than I care to remember - probably 25 years or more. If you're tired of the old night out for dinner -- "should we go someplace for steak or someplace for pasta -- it's time for Typhoon. Just a glance at the menu will tell you that this place is something special. Be sure to ask for Brian to say "hi" - he owns the place. Aside from the incredible pan-asian/western rim menu ... the service is terrific. Also - check out the Monday night concerts ..... Big band jazz .... where else can you get that in Los Angeles ?
We sent back the over cooked chicken. Resturant was not busy for a Friday night.
The fate of the Santa Monica Airport is still in question and that may have something to do with their lack of commitment to great food... not sure!
Lunch experiences only. An ideal location to watch airplanes.
Excellent food and service as always!
If you have an hour to spare on your mid-day, this is the place to be. It's totally relaxing experience to watch planes take off from the runway.
We've been going there for years, and during the last couple of visits over several months the quality of service seems to be declining while the time it takes to get your food is increasing.
I've been going to the Typhoon since it opened and have always had GREAT food there.
Made reservation a week in advance to see the Buddy Rich Band and requested a table next to the bandstand. The table was perfect and the food and music were all great. Friendly staff, nice atmosphere, it was a wonderful evening. Will definitely come back again!
We went here for my birthday the other night and there was an amazing jazz band playing. The whole restaurant made the experience so special for us. Between being extra accommodating and then bringing out a special birthday treat. The whole group raved about how it was one of the best dinner experiences they've ever had. It was so much fun! We are still talking about it!
We've been fans of Typhoon for years, and this week's visit reminded us why. From the Stir-Fried Eggplant, Honey Walnut Shrimp and Coconut-Curry Chicken, to the Filipino Fried Squid and Garlic Rice, every dish we shared tempted us to go back for seconds. The return of sushi to the menu was just as welcome. The Spicy Tuna Hand Roll we ordered as an appetizer was one of the best we've tasted anywhere. A return visit specifically for sushi is now on our agenda. With excellent cocktails, and a view that ranges from a Santa Monica Mountains panorama by day, to the mysterious expanse of the adjacent runway at night, Typhoon never fails to inspire us with its cuisine, its setting, and its swift and attentive service.
What brought me to the westside of town all the way from Pasadena was the featured band. I was seated in a perfect spot for listening and, as soon as I was seated, the waiter was ready to order my drink, which was exactly I wanted... even though I'd never had that drink before! The food was excellent (I had dumplings & a Chinese Chicken Salad) and... it was a perfect evening. I might consider making another pilgrimage across the 405.
Food was average at best. Been to Typhoon before and had a good memories. I don't think I will go back.
Been here many times, this time on a nice casual date. She liked it and I liked it. Started with really good Pork rolls that were seriously just made and were really quite delicious. The garlic noodles and chicken curry on fresh delicious nice brown rice rounded it off. I don't know how they could have done a better job on the service.
Typhoon was great, the food was great, great atmosphere, we saw a very good band play, but they made a mistake on my bill, which they were able to correct the next day, but I would and will go back
I would go with a group because the menu has a great many options. Very noisy. Not a place to go if you need to talk to your guests. Again the food was not served hot!
