I went to Txikito with a friend whose grandmother is Basque (my friend is from Argentina). The food is genuine Basque, creative and very delicious. This is a "small plates" restaurant. Dishes were brought in sequence so that each could be enjoyed fully. We shared about 7 dishes (2 appetiser and 5 "main" small plates). Not large eaters, 6 would have been just fine. Everything was interesting, tasty, perfect. Service was great, the staff made recommendations and we were happy with everything. Cocktails were also really good. With cocktails, wine, small plates, desert and coffee, we spent $200.00 for two people - so this is a $$$ restaurant. It's definitely worth it for special occasions and a taste treat.
We were looking for a great place to meet up with my daughter and her boyfriend for a meal after a midweek Broadway matinee, and we wanted to find something away from the hustle of Times Square and the theater district. Enter Txikito, a wonderful gem tucked away in Chelsea, with a modern take on Basque cuisine and an interesting collection of Spanish wines.
The space is well laid out, aided by the beautiful and warm fall evening that allowed them to open the front of the restaurant to the street seating, giving the whole place an open air feel. The crowd was lively, but not too loud for easy converstation, and the staff was attentive without hovering.
Our dinner selections included the Pulpo (octopus carpaccio), Txipiron Encebollado (squid ribbons), Maijuli (tomatoes, peppers and Jamon with a Basque anchovy), and the Arraultza (sofrito with chorizo and quail egg). The food was flavorful and subtle and beautifully presented.
We started with a glass of the Herrigoia Zuri Rioja Alavesa Malvasia and some olives, while we waited for everyone to arrive. During dinner we had the Vina Alberdi Reserva (a Tempranillo / Cabernet Suvignon blend from Rioja) and the Basilio Izquierdo Acodo Tinto (also from Rioja).
All in all this was a wonderful meal in a superb environment, and I would highly recommend Txikito to anyone looking for a great spot for dinner in Manhattan.
Every dish that came out was some of the best food we ever had. Spanish tapas, especially styled from the Basque region, is one of my favorite cuisines in the world. The food here transported me to this region very deftly. You’d be hard pressed to find better tapas.
Oh-boy where do you start. If you're thinking of going to Basque Country and want to try before you buy this is the place to go. The restaurant fitout is simple and rustic but don't let that bother you, take a seat and start ordering. Everything we tried, and we tried a lot, was delicious. The tastes were authentic and the menu options plentiful. Make sure you try one of the specials, we had the butterflied de-boned sea trout and that was a highlight. Don't know a lot about wine from Basque but the staff pointed us in the right direction. A must go for foodies that are up for something different.
We recently went to Txikito for my birthday. We were a party of 6 people. The food was good, but we had terrible service. Our waitress was very rude and unpleasant. From the moment we sat down, she had an attitude. It was really odd. I've lived in NYC for a long time, and I haven't had this bad of service in a long time. It was a disappointing experience, since it was my birthday, and she made our entire table upset. Also, the hostess was not friendly either. I didn't feel like they were very accommodating to larger parties.
Previous dinner with summer specials was good, this time around everything was just average with unwarranted prices. Beef tongue was the most horrible I've ever tried. Not recommended at all. BTW, waiters wearing shorts and t/shorts - what's that, a burger place?
Txikito was recommended to us from a friend but sadly the experience left a lot to be desired—the dishes were rather lackluster and frankly quite puzzling . The deep fried beef tongue lacked any kind of texture and was completely flavourless and dry—perhaps deep frying it in the first place is not such a good idea? We love basque food from the actual region but sadly the food here did not compare to that. Service was friendly and professional.
my mother and I shared the fairy tale eggplant (excellent) and the shrimp (difficult to peel) before sharing the delicious special fish dish. We finished with the chocolate flan.
Although the waiter started to fillet the flat fish at the table, it was done incompletely.
We had to ask for bread.
We were seated at a nice table at exactly the time we had a reservation. No waiting. Our server was fabulous. He described each dish that we asked about in detail. We had a lot of the tapas--all delicious--but some super delicious. We especially enjoyed the squid ribbons, the crab bruschetta and the eggplant special. Not cheap at $65 a person but we will definitely return.
