We were very disappointed. We'd had lunch there prior to this visit and really enjoyed it. Dinner was a different situation. The menu was limited, and they pretty much failed across the board. The service was nonchalant, which was strange given that the server had no other tables to serve. I had the Brunswick stew which was not much more than sauce with a few lima beans and some tepid chicken shreds sprinkled on top. No sides, one small piece of corn bread (which the server initially forgot to bring) that was also barely warmed. For $18, this was ridiculous. The spaghetti squash was fair. It had an avocado that was beautifully cut, but that was the highlight of the dish. The rest of it was blah. We started with a goat cheese tartlet that was also uninspired. The caesar salad had a thick dressing that was largely flavorless. We later learned that they had a bar menu which our host said she usually tells people to opt for. My suggestion to Tula's is that if they can't be bothered with proper dinner entrees, they should just stick with the simple items that they can definitely do well. To charge anywhere from $18 to $35 for dinners that are as unimaginative as these does a disservice to your patrons.

We had a lovely dinner on their patio. Attentive and cheery service. Food is very good, but dinner menu is small. Only six items plus a special.

It was a perfect evening for outdoor dining and we enjoyed the ambiance of Tula's patio. The Caesar salad we shared was excellent and totally delicious. We both had Brunswick stew and, while tasty enough, it seemed all too much like undiluted Campbell's tomato soup with a few vegetables added; the very nice pulled chicken pieces on top were a little dry from the final heating. The accompanying cornbread was over salted but had a very pleasant hint of olive oil. Tula's usually does much better so I'm hopeful for next time. I will always remember one of the best sandwiches I've ever eaten I was served there last summer.

The food was seasonal and good. My husband' steak was not cooked to order, and he sent it back. The server was apologetic and the food was returned cooked to order. I waited until my husband's food was returned before I began eating, and by that time the food was lukewarm. An offer to re-heat my dinner would have been appreciated. In spite of this, we enjoyed our evening and will return next time we are in the area.

I just want to say that I do not plan to use Open Table anymore. We had a hard time getting a reservation at Tulia's through Open Table; were told on your website that we couldn't have a reservation at 6:00 pm, only 4:30 or 6:15. We arrived early and were able to be seated at 5:30. There was only one other table occupied the entire time we were there. We left about 6:30, and we were the only people inside; there were some outside. Why did Open Table say that there was no room for us at 6:00?

Tula's is a pleasant place in lovely little town. Nice basic food, nice setting, decent service. There aren't many (if any other) options in Washington, but this place acts like it wants your business. Three of us had a nice, unhassled lunch in a light-filled room. It was very enjoyable.

We were in Washington, VA for a few days. Several of the locals had suggested that we have a meal at Tulas. My wife and I wanted a smaller meal for dinner. After checking your website we had selections in mind off the bar menu. Your website states in at least two places that the bar menu is served all day. After being seated in the main dining area around 6:30pm I requested the Bar Menu. The server told me items on that menu were only available in the bar area from 3-5pm. I did not challenge her on the inconsistency of that response with the information stated on your website. We then ordered larger meals off the regular menu.

Shortly after we were served the larger meals a Father and daughter were seated at the table immediately next to us. He looked at the dinner menu and then requested the bar menu. The same server gave him the bar menu without hesitation and without stating any limitations on when and where those items were available. The Father then placed his order from that menu.

Upon leaving the restaurant we walked through the bar area. I noted several customers seated there eating items of the bar menu. It was well past the 5pm time limit stated by our server.

It appears that the information on the website is correct and that the server was misinformed or attempting to increase the overall tab with higher priced meals. That is not the public image the establishment should convey.

I shared this information twice with the restaurant, but did not receive a response.

Our expectations for dinner were not met, and my wife and I were disappointed by our visit.

Worst food in this price category I've ever had. Olive mozzarella starter was like grocery container left in the fridge for weeks. Duck over paella special did not taste (understatement) or look good plated. Server not knowledgeable on dishes and even went as far as offering her moral aversion to eating lamb when asked about the lamb dish. Originally refused to comp duck dish but eventually came back and manager comped it. Overheard another table of two got one entree wrong and other person sat with her entree getting cold until they offered to put it in the microwave or oven. Had to go elsewhere for a second dinner.

The new watermelon radish salad over arugula lightly tossed in a cumber vinaigrette is topped with the most ingeniously, carefully crafted avocado I have ever seen. And they consistently have the bets burgers. Just perfect!

Tula's was NOT OPEN on the night we had a reservation. (So ignore the stars or lack thereof - wish there was an option not to have to choose). Despite lots of confirmation emails and messages. Best to call ahead I guess. Or make other plans.

Dined recently after a long absence. Seared duck breast was good but the accompanying saffron pistachio rice was lukewarm and dry and the token vegetable (split peas?) was nondescript, both probably warmed up in the microwave. Altogether, quite disappointing.

My wife and I had a wonderful meal this past Saturday night when we were in the area to do some winter hiking in the Shenandoahs. We didn't know that we arrived on an evening with a special Valentine's Day prix fixe menu, but we were delighted to order from that. Other than the chateaubriand and flourless chocolate cake, my wife and I had different choices for the other courses. We both found our meals delightful and consistently terrific in presentation and taste. Our kudos to the chef and kitchen staff. We are not regulars to the area, but if we were, we would definitely want to dine at Tula's again. We have no hesitation recommending it as a place to go (as opposed to the "other place" around the corner).

As an alternative to its famous over-fancy neighbor I was pleased with the menu and pricing - a little pricey but the food was good.
For a Friday night it was very quiet - only 10 customers in the 7-8 pm hour, still I prefer the quiet so no complaint from me.
Service was reasonably good - certainly prompt and friendly enough.
Parking was easy right out front.

Having made a reservation when we arrived there were no more tables available in the dining room. When we said, "But we had a reservation." we were told " so did everyone else". I have never had such an experience. It seems to me if you take reservations you make sure you can honor them. If not, do not take reservations.

The meal was OK, but when we overheard a table close to us (seated in the bar) ask for bread only to be told it would cost $1.00 we were shocked. I can't imagine the good will that is lost will ever be eclipsed by the dollar gained.

We came back to Tula's to try it again having had a terrible meal in May. At the least, it will be another 6 months before we subject ourselves to Tula's again.

Two friends and I had lunch at Tula's on December 7, 2016. We had a lovely meal and were able to spend a lot of time after lunch catching up. The pace was relaxed and friendly. I got the veggie wrap with red pepper, goat cheese, and avocado salsa (I think?) It was even better than I expected and was cut into two easy-to-manage portions. One friend ordered the French Dip and enjoyed it; the other friend, who has to eat gluten-free because of celiac's disease, got a bun-less hamburger with a salad on the side. The menu offered on this day was not fancy, but the dishes were thoughtfully prepared and presented. Our server was attentive and respected our concern that our friend's meal be absolutely gluten free. We thoroughly enjoyed it and would go back.

We had brunch at Tula's recently. My companions ordered eggs benedict and they enjoyed their meals. I ordered a roasted spaghetti squash salad for my main course dish. It was not good. First of all, it was served cold, which I did not expect for a brunch main course. Second, it was just a small bowl of cold spaghetti squash with some olives, peppers and a little avocado. The Kalamata olives were just too strong for the other flavors and there were too many. Finally, it was served in what I would use as a cereal bowl at home. Not a portion for a main course. However, since the salad was not good anyway, I did not eat most of it so the portion size did not matter in this case.
I remember eating a Tula's a year or so ago for brunch and ordered the salad then, too. It was a different salad but was also served in the small cereal bowl. Not good value for the money.
They do not give you bread and butter, which is a major omission in my book.
The desserts were good.
The service a little harried, but OK. Multiple servers came to our table to ask if someone had taken our order. I appreciate the attention, but I think they could be more organized.

My second visit to Tula's was as enjoyable as the first. Good wine selection and the server suggested a sample tasting of a wine I had never experienced. The menu had changed since my first visit and I was glad the chicken had been deleted. This time I had curry shrimp with peas, Ukon gold potatoes and rice- delicious! A group of 12 men and 1 woman were finishing a meal next to me. After they had settled their checks they sang "You Gotta Have Faith" and left. It was a pleasant and unexpected treat! When I visit my son in Sperryville again I will definitely be making a reservation at Tula's for another enjoyable meal.

My husband and I had a reservation for 7:30 on a Saturday and arrived on time. The host was rushing around and didn't greet us or ask us to wait. We were seated fairly quickly, but then no one appeared with water, candles, napkins or to take our drink order. After 10-15 minutes we grabbed the attention of a waitress to bring us water. She was apologetic. She then disappeared and came back after 10 minutes to take our drink and food order. We grabbed a candle and napkins from an empty table. After another 10 minutes we were served our salad. We attempted to order wine directly at the bar, but there was no bar tender, so we continued to wait. We asked for wine again from a waitress, and it arrive after we had been seated for 45 minutes. The main meal arrived a few minutes later. The food was fine.

It was clear that the restaurant was completely understaffed. There were several parties that came and decided to leave as a result of the spotty service, and there seemed to be frustration at several tables. The service became a joke at tables around us. By 8:30, there were only three tables occupied in the main dining room and no one at the tables in the bar or outside. Seems like a missed opportunity on a Saturday night!

Overall, this was a management issue and something that could be easily fixed. The waitresses were not well trained, but they were very busy and rushing to clear tables deliver water, take orders and deliver food. They were friendly but didn't seem to know how to handle the situation.

Our experience at Tula's was nothing short of awful.

We arrived early and took a seat at the bar to await our 7:30 reservation seating, and the service at the bar was friendly, but very slow. After that, it just went downhill.

The table we were offered was dirty when we were shown to the dining room, so we stood in the middle of the dining area while we waited for it to be cleaned - which didn't happen until the bartender (manager?) from the front of the house came back and cleared it. After seating, we waited for a member of the wait staff to ask us for a drink order, but after waiting, the first waitress to approach our table asked, simply, brusquely, "Are you ready to order?" No greeting. No asking if we had questions about the menu. No asking if we wanted drinks. No welcome to the restaurant. No introductions.

Shrugging off her rudeness, we placed our orders - for the entire meal including drinks, starters, and mains - right then. Then we waited. And waited. Some 15 minutes later, we still didn't have our drinks, our starters (simple caesar salads) were nowhere to be seen, and the first we saw of our waitress was when she returned to tell us that one of our mains was no longer available. For a 7:30 seating. After we'd already waited more than 15 minutes. Further, when she asked what we wanted instead, when asked if we could substitute something on the replacement dish (perhaps a vegetable in place of sweet potato mash), her response, and I quote: "No."

As a result, we canceled our order and - foregoing our reservation - headed to the bar. The result? We walked back to our inn with mediocre bar food ("French" dip sandwiches, sans French bread) ordered to go that still took 30+ minutes to produce.

This restaurant is severely overrated. The prices are inflated, and they don't deliver.
