Tsunami - Panhandle Ratings and Reviews
We sat at the sushi bar and ended up getting the head sushi chef. He made us delicious sushi and recommended based on fish quality. He was also very accommodating with our allergies (celiac). The waitresses were also very knowledgeable on the sake and Japanese whiskey.
A fun, hip neighborhood sushi joint. Very good, friendly service. They have creative sushi offerings which were interesting and different but found the traditional offerings to be better overall. I'd go back but would stick to the basics. Great sake list.
The food and service is very good but the seating arrangement is pretty bad unless you sit at the couch like dining tables that look more like hotel foyer coffee chairs and tables. There is limited arrangement in the interior design to avoid noise reduction so it is hard to eat and chat. If the owners wanted you to eat quickly and get out, they have been successful
Tsunami is very hip - great music, looks great, etc. Their prices are a bit over the top. All of there beers are $11-14, sake is $20/glass, and standard sushi rolls have fancy names/descriptions and are $5 more than they should be. That being said, the food is very good and the restaurant looks great.
A superb dinner at Tsunami. It is worth the extra price for such exceptional quality. The chef's choices and daily specials are delicious, and every bite was more than memorable. We sat at a large communal table, and felt we had enough space and privacy to carry on a conversation. I absolutely recommend Tsunami as a San Francisco landmark for sushi. Trendy, beautiful ambiance, stellar service, and memorable.
Fun neighborhood sushi! The service was excellent. We tried lots of things cooked and Raw. Some things were excellent others ok. The miso soup was very different, didn't care for the flavor. They took back and removed from the bill. The calamari was over cooked and unseasoned. Also returned and removed. Chefs sushi and sashimi were awesome! Loved the spicy California roll with yellowtail and jalapeño.
I would come back here!
The buttery fatty tuna just melted in your mouth. Wow. And the depth of flavor and the butteryness. This was rich and awesome. Like starting with dessert.
Then fully matured hamachi, with taste to match. Not your run of the mill fish here.
Then on to mackerel, baked black cod, ...
We stayed on the catch of the day menu and all were wonderful and unusual, clearly sourced for their unique qualities and highlighted perfectly.
The service was excellent as well. We bounced around on the sake choice and were graciously offered samples to help decide.
Overall a truly great dining experience, and well worth the splurge.
All this wonderfulness does have a price, and likely needs to be dosed to fit the budget, but well worth it.
Service was great, food was good. I appreciate the wide variety of beer, since I am personally not a fan of the watery kirin, asahi, sapporo trio. I think the prices are perhaps 25% higher than they should be for the product, and there are a lot of good sushi places in town.
