Service a little slow for being there early....over all good expierence except for the ciappino....extremely salty
We tried the fillet and scallops both close to the best I've had and for a high quality food place the price wasn't all that bad either I just wish there was more!
Had a birthday dinner last night.
1. Ordered Grey Goose on the rocks and the drink had a yellow cast - perhaps had Vermouth in it but the waiter said there is no Vermouth in the restaurant.
2. Salad half finished and the main course was served. Had to remove butter plates, butter and bread to make room for all the plates.
3. Ordered spinach, arrived late, ordered sweet potato fries - arrived when dinner was almost finished.
First time visiting, heard it was great but you did not prove it to me. Just thought you should what is going on.

Love this place! Always delicious and the service is always on point. The only issue I have with this place is that when I go with a group of friends and a non romantic friend, I end up in a romantic booth. Pretty much (surprisingly) the same booth. Lighting is way to dark. I have to maneuver the menu in order to even see what I want to order. The only other thing for me is the prices for their wine. There isn't a less expensive choice on their menu. I know how much some wines cost and they mark up considerably on their wines which for me this last time was an option I opted out of. I am not cheap by any means, but when I can buy the same bottle of wine for 20 bucks and they charge 17 for a half glass, I'm going to pass on that.
Dinner, Sat night, party of 4, first time.
Pre-meal bread (warm) was really good.
Crab cake ($18) was as rumored: one of the best around!
7oz filet mignon ($37) was very tasty and well-prepared.
Service was excellent. (They not only called to confirmed the reservation, but they also called the afternoon after to follow up to make sure you had a great time--now that is a first!)
Ambiance was great.
Only minor setbacks: was a bit too loud/noisy and lighting is a tad too dim.
Parking is a bit tricky (under the Hyatt and traverse your way to their restaurant) unless you valet ($8). They do validate.
I think this is the best seafood in San Diego county. The shrimp are phenomenal, and the crab mac n cheese was better than I expected. The desserts are an unexpected treat and better than any of the competitors' by far. We dined with visitors from out-of-town, and they loved the food as well.
Coming highly recommended by friends in South Florida I thought I would try Truluck's for the first time and it was top drawer. I decided to dine in the bar because it seemed like a nice crowd. The bar staff was awesome and started me off with a “Dinner Martini”. I met others at the bar who gave me recommendations on food selections. The warm goat cheese with peppadew salad and the hot ‘n’ crunchy butterflied shrimp were really delicious and as was the The Crossings 2013 New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc that I ordered to accompany the food. The live music was a bonus.
Never dissapointed, the King Crab Legs and sea food is amazingly good. Third time we visit it and ready to come back again.
What a Great Dinner! Food was tremendous. Service was outstanding.
Excellent dining experience. Live music, not too loud or annoying. Extensive wine selection of good quality wines. The "wedge" salad was half a head of lettuce and well-covered with dressing and goodies. I had the filet mignon and my wife had the peppered Ahi - both were outstanding. The crispy brussels sprouts were a new experience for us and they were also very good. We ordered the chocolate "bag" to share for dessert; it's filled with cubes of pound cake, berries, and whipped cream and it could easily have fed 4 people. It was my wife's birthday and we were treated to a chocolate cupcake with cherries flambe at the table - don't recall if it was a menu selection also. Attentive service.
Our meal was good, seafood for both. The service, David Pierce was excellent!
We came here based on reviews and were impressed with every aspect of our dining experience. Very classy atmousphere and staff. Excellent food and service. Fantastic presentation and attentiveness. We had King crab, seafood platter, and ceviche and all were excellent. Even the bread was delish. Portions were huge leaving us in need of stretchers! This sadly meant no room for desert which looked devine. Don't think, just go, you won't be sorry.
We were not greeted pleasantly, or at all really, but were asked with a smile if we had reservations. I thought that was a small faux pas. The waiter was very personable, professional, and friendly. He matched the energy and attitude of our table. Our waiter, Cory, was knowledgable about the wine and the food and was happy to offer recommendations. We were not rushed and I was surprised to learn we were there for over two hours. We enjoyed the chill platter for two which I would consider a "must have" for fist time patrons to Truluck's. I opted for the Rolls-Royce of lobster, the South African. It was so large I couldn't eat it all after the chill platter appetizer. Excellent stone and king crab! The noise to light ratio was not pleasant.
The restaurant parking was a little tricky to figure out - valet would have been very easy and was very affordable at $8. Self-parking was free in the hotel next door, but it took a series of stairs and elevators to reach the restaurant - we got lost once.
The mussels appetizer were expensive and a major let down The mussel meat was extremely small and the sauce just ok.
Everything else was fantastic. I had the pork chop which was short of amazing. My wife had the Miso Sea bass, also short of amazing. It was our anniversary - the free dessert was A+ on presentation with alcohol lit on fire - but it tasted awful. However, the other desserts looked amazing, we had the coconut pie - delicious and you indeed cannot taste the Stevia.
Excellent service, superior food, great ambiance. I cannot think of a single area which was less than 5 stars.
Fine dining at its finest! Best seafood. You get what you pay for, so if you ever hear that they are pricey at least you know its worth it. Cant wait till we come back to San Diego just so i can come back for seconds.
The place is very nice, food is great but service is excellent.
Sammy completed our fabulous dinning experience. His recommendation were perfect including his wine pairings. The food was incredible. Miso glazed sea bass was one of the best I've ever had.
The crab cakes made the night but the sea bass and salmon were first class, especially with the crab and shrimp bernaise sauce.
We found the recommended sea bass the best prepared fish we'd ever had! Thank you, Matt!
You won't be disappointed here. Food is great and service and ambiance match. Had sea bass over crab fried rice and it was cooked to perfection. Wife had seared ahi tuna with wasabi mashed potatoes which was also perfect. Martins were tasty and with good booze. This is our third visit to this place as we travel to San Diego area 2-3 times per year from Scottsdale to get out of the summer heat and hit del mar races.
Wonderful place to dine, outstanding food and service. Sam took wonderful care of use. Could not ask for any better service.
Had the pleasure of enjoying an early dinner with friends at Truluck's on July 16 while on business travel in San Diego. San Diego and the surrounding area has a lot to offer in the culinary department, but if you don't make it to Truluck's you are missing a great opportunity to experience some of the best San Diego has to offer. From the delicious dirty martini with blue cheese olives, to the exceptional oysters and expertly prepared South African lobster tail this was by far the best meal I had in San Diego during my 7 day stay. Finally, I'd like to give a shout out to our engaging waiter, David, who ensured that we were well taken care of.
Amazing food and even better service. Ask for Sammy and make sure you have crab.
Excellent seafood with many choices. Huge seafood platters with good selection. Salmon with bear use and lump crab was excellent. Cobia also properly cooked with crispy skin. Enormous rich desserts best shared with 4-6.
I have dined at Truluck's several times and I have never been disappointed. Food is great, Service is always spot on. Love the outdoor patio with fireplace!
my new hotspot place on Mondays. Stone Crabs are AWESOME!!!
We'd been here once before just for late night drinks at the bar with some friends. This time we went in for our annivesary dinner and had a wonderful time. First drinks at the bar with some appetizers. Crab cakes were excellent as were the BBQ shrimp. Drinks are even better during happy hour; half price but full-leaded.
Dinner was also excellent, and had very good service. Couldn't really find anything to complain about.
Musical group just inside entrance very pleasing but too loud, and speakers in dining area too loud. Made worse by very loud nearby party who lacked consideration for other diners. Regardless, Truluck's justifies its reputation as one of the finest in Southern California.
We thoroughly enjoyed our romantic dinner for 2 at Truluck's. Sam, our waiter was supberb. We both enjoyed two different fish entres and I highly recommend the carrot cake for dessert - the finishing touch by pouring cararmel sauce and sugared pecans on the cake - yummy! I wish we could of have enjoyed the bag of chocolate dish as well - it looked amazing. Thanks to Sam for making our evening a memorable one.
I dined there with 4 other guests. 3 of them had the Chilean seabass and loved it. 2 of us had the steak. My friend had a medium ribeye and said it was great. I had a NY strip and thought it was disappointing. First thing I noticed was that my food (potatoes and steak) was really warm instead of hot. The potatoes tasted a little bland. I ordered my steak medium, which in my opinion should have a mostly pink center with a touch of red in the middle, came out med-well and charred on the outside (did I mention it wasn't that hot either?). I'm pretty forgiving and I didn't want to wait the extra time it would take to cook a new steak so I politely didn't mention it. Not everything was bad though. The salad and service were excellent.
If you love crab, you will be in heaven at Truluck's. They had three kinds the night we were there, and out it in the salads, appetizers and main courses. Other seafood is exellent too. Our salmon and shrimp main courses were flavorful and expertly cooked
Great bar scene-including a jazz pianist on a Wednesday night meant a great night was had by
Ask for Jennie's station if you want attentive service and a good guide to the menu. She's very personable and attended to our every need.
Great ambience, delicious food and impeccable service make Truluck's La Jolla a 5 star dining experience! We had a great corner booth that could "people watch" while enjoying creamy lobster bisque as a first course. Our entrees consisted of the gigunda king crab legs and sautéed scallops all perfectly cooked. All reasonably large portions. Although stuffed, we somehow managed to share the delicious carrot cake laced with caramel sauce and candied pecans-a true delight but easily big enough for 4 people to share!! The only downside to this restaurant was the expensive valet service- too bad the restaurant doesn't validate considering the prices.
Food is great but you can't talk because the noise level is so high.
The waiter was very good and everything else about the place was also above par.
My wife had a great birthday dinner to kick off my 43rd year! The food was amazing and the service was equally impressive. It was vibrant and a very active place but we still were able to enjoy each other, having a great conversation! The waiter made us feel like VIPs and the complementary desert was a nice touch! Will definitely return!
My wife and I selected Truluck's for date night on a Saturday evening. We were seated in a small corner near the kitchen entrance, which was slightly disappointing, but it did not detract from our experience. Of course, we would have preferred to be in the main dining room. The meal was quite good. On the recommendation of our waiter, I had the New York strip smothered with the Ponchartrain sauce, and that was fabulous. My wife had the filet mignon, which was also very good. We completed our meal with a perfectly prepared sugar-free coconut cream pie and coffee. The coffee were served in individual french press pots.
I've been here three times now and it's always been a pleasure. Food, service, and decor are always excellent.
The stone crab claws are amazing, but so was everything else. My husband had surf & turf and enjoyed it very much. It is expensive but worth it for the quality of the seafood. Delicious!
Early eating and by myself. Only person in dining room. Waiter forgot 1 of 3 things I ordered. 2 of 3 things I ordered (crab mac n cheese and crab cake) were cold in the middle. Seemed they were pulled out of a refrigerator and stuck in an oven.
Well deserved rating of #1 restaurant in San Diego. Extraordinary attention to every detail. Well done!
