Truluck's Seafood, Steak and Crab House - La Jolla Ratings and Reviews
In San Diego from NY to celebrate my boyfriend's birthday. Found this restaurant recommended by multiple websites and it did not disappoint. Everything about our experience was outstanding. The food was incredible, gorgeous decor, excellent live music, and our waiter was second to none with wonderful service. Not only did they provide a complamentary dessert for his birthday but also a card signed by staff working that day. I have been contacted a few ties since the visit by the restaurant to ensure satisfaction with the visit. They couldn't do anything better. Now one of my favorite restaurants. Will definately be returning in future trips!
Trulucks is an amazing restaurant with outstanding food. These menu may appear overwhelming at times, but only because it is difficult to choose which amazing dish you will have for the night. The staff is very respectful and friendly. The service was fantastic. It was my wife's birthday and they gave her a molten chocolate cake along with a birthday card signed by all the staff. This is definitely one of the best restaurants in San Diego. Give it a chance and you won't regret it.
First time @ Truluck's. We'd heard it's good but expensive; understatement on both accounts. The food was GREAT. We ordered fresh Alaskan King Crab Legs at ~$70/lb (so yeah, it IS rather expensive considering "per pound" in seafood includes the weight of the shell...haha), but price aside, this was the best crab I have ever, ever had. The legs were cooked perfectly. They pre-cracked them so they were easy to eat. The crab was sugar sweet and tasted fresher than any crab I've ever had (including dungeness crab back east that we literally caught in crab pots, boated home and cooked them up that night). Even the sides were excellent. Service was great and they even did a bday dessert that was tasty & beautiful. Save up your pennies and go!
Outstanding dining experience. Awesome reception upon check-in. We were early but staff worked with us for a great table. Waiter (Ryan) was knowledgeable and professional. He gave great recommendations and was very accommodating. This restaurant has gone to the top of our list. Truly enjoyable!
My husband and I were expecting a lot from this restaurant after reading so many good things about the food and looking at the pictures on line, but we got so frustrated to have to pay $38,00 on the "Sea bass" dish that just looks good......the fish was not all the way trough cooked!!!..bummer... and pay $18,00 for "one" medium size crab cake, definitely not worth it!
everything about this place is fantastic. The quality of the food, the atmosphere, music, service and wine list. It's become our new favorite spot-especially the happy hour! So glad we got this recommendation from our good friends. The only thing that could improve this restaurant would be a view of the ocean-but honestly you hardly miss it. Bravo Truluck.
We discovered Trulucks 4 years ago when looking for a birthday venue for my husbands birthday in January. As out of towners we read reviews and were impressed with the honest and always positive responses reviewers posted on food issues. When we tried it, we were not disappointed and have returned every year since for both birthdays and one New Years Eve when we were just after a midnight toast.
It's a good find when all things come together so well: food, ambience, service and people.
The food was amazing but the service started out great but ended poorly. We specifically asked (as we always do) for salad dressing on the side but when the salad came the dressing was on the lettuce. We politely asked for dressing on the side at which point our waiter sharply said "no one told me that!" as he handed the plate to the person next to him and again said "tell the kitchen it was not explicitly stated." After that the service lacked, my water cup often went empty (and it was my birthday!) as did others at the table. What started off as a magical night ended poorly.
Truluck's is the perfect place to go on dates or with friends. The atmosphere and ambiance was just perfect for a classy-type feel. The taste and quality of the food are legit. It really melts in your mouth. Portion of the food was just about right. I couldn't complain. The server was highly knowledgeable and friendly. His choice of recommendations were authentic. I definitely would love to come here again. It perfectly fits for a special occasion.
We went to Trulucks because we found it rated in the top ten restaurants in the San Diego area (#1 overall). We were pleased with the great service, the entertainment and the food. All were excellent.
My wife had the seabass and I had the Salmon Bearnaise (sp?). They were both excellent dishes that we would recommend to anyone.
It was a great experience.
Server was charming. Atmosphere a delight. Fish (chilean seabass) was perfect. My husband ordered the Alaska crab legs. He thought the knuckle end a bit fishy. Celebrated our 49th anniversary there and they surprised us with a lovely desert. The martini glasses were a small size considering what they charge.
My third visit, second birthday celebration. Food is outstanding. My favorite is the miso sea bass. This time I had the pan seared salmon. It was equally delicious. Cocktails were perfect. Waiter excellent. I highly recommend Trulucks. Just ask for a table some distance from the bar because the piano player while good is loud. I especially love the special celebration desserts they offer. Be sure to mention that you are there for a birthday or anniversary.
Truluck's is a gem. We've been twice, and it's worth every penny. Multiple pennies, to be exact, but for a rare, special occasion, it is our go-to place. We both had seafood: king crab legs for her, chilled crab claws for me. Each meal came with two sides; we didn't come close to finishing either side (the portions are huge). Regardless of what you order, you will not go wrong with the wine we chose: Caymus 2011. Sammy, our waiter, was friendly, informative and gracious. I even got a call the next day from the restaurant's manager checking to be sure we had a pleasant experience; I assured him that we did.
We made reservations on Christmas eve for a special dinner for four at Trulucks because our daughter LOVES stone crab and had experienced it at Trulucks before. We were so disappointed that stone crab was not available that night. Our waitress offered to talk to the chef to see if there were any left or if they could come up with enough for some but could only come up with an appetizer amount so the entree order was changed. The meal was great, as were all three different meals but will have to experience stone crab another time.
I wanted to take my girlfriend somewhere we will never forget. We had plans to stay in San Diego for the weekend but because of the holidays, we had to cancel. I did some research on excellent dining in San Diego and came across Truluck's. We ended up taking a limo and we had the dining experience of a lifetime. We ordered the calamari, seared tuna, mussels, and the African lobster. Everything was spectacular. We have made up our mind and will make an effort to make Truluck's our official anniversary spot.
Service from Andrew was top notch. He is a pro and clearly has his craft down pat. Attention to detail, warm hospitality, never intrusive but always on top of the table's needs. Food was exceptional. Bar scene made it too noisy but it was a Friday during the holidays. We are not fans of most chain restaurants. Trulucks is an exception. We received a call the next day to check on our satisfaction. Now that is attention to detail and customer service. These restauranteurs are pros. Thr Sea Bass is to die for.
My dinner companions and I visit a special restaurant once per year. We have visited Morton's, Fleming's, Donovan's, and Ruth's Chris in recent years. This was one exceptional experience! Our server was right on! The food was first class! Your South African lobster was luxurious. You did yourselves proud. I was most pleased by your attention to detail and how well you presented your menu. I look forward to the opportunity to dine with you again. Thank you for a wonderful evening!
Trulucks is one of the best restaurant in the N. San Diego/La Jolla area. Wine list is excellent, variety of prices/quality but not overwhelming. Hostess knows where to seat you which is nice. For example, if your with business colleagues she'll sit you at table with chairs kinda out of the way so that you can have a conversation, if you on a date or with your spouse, they sense that and usually will sit you in a booth so that the atmosphere is more romantic. The food is fantastic. If you like crab this is the place to go. Sea Bass, Tuna all of their fish are prepared tremendously well. Haven't tried their steak yet, but I have no doubts it would be prepared perfectly.
you cannot go wrong, fish is fresh, sustainable and very well prepared. Waiter was extremely knowledgeable, very helpful and all in all it was a great dining experience. The band in the bar was VERY loud making conversation at our table tough. But the food and service helped us overcome the piano bar music.
I love stone crab, and Truluck's hit the spot with sweet, fresh stone crab. I live on the West Coast and don't hit Miami, Florida like I used to, so finding Truluck's was truly lucky on my part. The entire dinner was excellent, well paced, and an enjoyable, delicious experience. The stone crab was succulent, the wedge salad was crisp, the filet was perfectly rare, the parmesan mashed potatoes a delightful accompaniment and the malt chocolate cake was the crowning delight.
I moved to San Diego in Jan 1988 from 35+ years in L.A. - I've eaten in many countries around the world and the food and service here are first class without any qualifications. Andrew, our waiter was patient, answered all of our questions, asked first if we even wanted to know about a certain food, did not wait too long to check back and was as courteous, polite and professional as I've ever experienced. I cannot think of any if, and's or buts as to why I would not highly recommend Truluck's. My wife had crab and I had the South African lobster. I'm a diver and am used to going down and "getting my own dinner" and this was excellent in preparation and taste.
